Two characters. Two characters that hold their each individual weight to balance the story. Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, encompasses the story of Guy Montag. He is a firefighter whose job is to create fires rather than put them out in this theoretical distant future. He burns books, because they are illegal. His ideals are firm until he meets a girl named Clarisse. Her curious personality puts a spark back in him, which makes him want to find the truth behind fbooks and as to why they are forbidden. This trying feat is made even more difficult when his own wife Mildred is against these ways and only desires to be a simple being with no dreams. His wife unsurprisingly gives him up to the authorities, so he must flee and escape the city …show more content…

Mildred’s beliefs is similar to the rest of the society’s beliefs and is inevitably bringing civilization back to the past. Her way of thinking is a relapse back to a dark part of history. The destruction of books is not a new practice. In an article about this subject, Sims 2 Kenneth Baker writes, “The earliest recorded book burning took place in 213 BC”. This clearly shows that in their beliefs, Clarisse is the progression and Mildred, along with society, is the regression. Stuck in the past. It does stop there though, their beliefs show in their personalities as well. Next, the obvious difference is Mildred’s and Clarisse’s personalities. As shown before, Clarisse is quite inquisitive with her deep curiosity with the workings of the world such as the reasoning behind the lengthy billboards (Bradbury 3). Also, shown before is that Mildred is not a curious being and instead being bland in taste as her only interest was with the television and the people in it which is shown when she says, “That’s my family” (Bradbury 21), when referring to the TV characters. These examples display the great difference in the depth of the characters
