My family history has influenced who I am today due to the fact that I have descended from a long line of artistic people. On my mother’s side, there have been many who have worked with painting, music, drawing, dancing, and even film production. From day one in school I have loved the arts and have found that it is my passion. Both my parents have been highly supportive of wanted to continue my love of dance during and after college and also with pursuing it as a career. Not only that, but I have lived in Pittsboro, North Carolina all my life and stayed within the school systems in the county moving from elementary, to middle, to now high school. I have been very fortunate to have gone to schools that are highly oriented with the arts. However, it was an amazing decision and I am beyond thankful at how marching band has pushed me to grow in my music ability, and in teaching me many life skills that will benefit me in my future. Learning within a school system involved in the arts has not only grown my love for music but also my love for dance. Before high school, I had never taken a dance class. Since joining the dance program I have fallen in love with dance. It has given me a way to healthily express my feelings and thoughts and has pushed me to learn new ways in which my body functions. I have choreographed my own pieces and have performed many times. These educational opportunities in the arts have opened up a path of dance that I am determined to stick with for my future. As a youth, I engaged in many forms of dance expression. I studied tap, jazz, and ballet for fifteen years. During these formative years, I choose to forgo many youth experiences so that I could participate in advance dance programs. Marching band was one of the most difficult/challenging activity systems that I have ever done in my life. But at the same time it was an inspirational and motivating aspect of my life. The very first thing it taught me was the definition of hard work. This was because I spent hundreds of hours to my dedication and devotion to band marching around the field in the hot sun every day. Even though there were times when I wanted to quit; one such instance was when we were out performed by another school, other times it was becuase of the teacher being a little too hard on me when I first started. Despite setbacks such as these, I had an ardent attraction to marching band, mainly because in middle school I was a part of concert band, which made me love music. The biggest, reason why I chose to do marching band, aside from my enjoyment of music, was because towards the end of my eighth grade year my middle school band director told us about a huge opportunity that we had coming up to become a part of the high school across the street marching band. African American students are generally most successful in a less formal, experience-driven learning environment. They tend to prefer cooperative learning and a social atmosphere. The attention span for African American students has been shown to be shorter than other those from other cultures, so shorter, more concise lessons benefit them. It has been shown that African American students enjoy storytelling and learning through hands-on experience and creative methods.
A love of marching band acts as fuel for the commitment the members put into it. The activity has rapidly grown into an important event I look forward to in the fall and whenever there is an upcoming event. Likewise, the band room has created a home. The way in which the ‘family’ unit is perceived has changed immensely since the last quarter of the twentieth century. Over time, many factors have contributed to these changes including, and not limited to, the industrial revolution, the feminist movement, the period of modernity and technological advancements. As a result, these factors have influenced significant changes to the ‘family’, these include; the increasing rates of female occupation, mean age at marriage, divorce, unmarried couples, single parents, mean age at birth of first child, and a decline in marriage rates. Moreover, this essay will examine how the family has changed over time through discussing the factors that have contributed to these changes. It is for these reasons and observations made by sociologists that it could be inferred that the way the family unit is perceived has changed greatly over time.
The marching band has also felt like a home away from home. If I wasn’t at home with my parents, I was on the band field. While being in the marching band at my high school, my long-term goal was to become their drum major for my last two years. I wanted to be the drum major that would cause the band members to put every ounce of passion into performing the show. Once I decided this during my freshman year, I put my heart and soul into my band. I stepped up to any work my band director needed help with.
