The word family has changed so much in the past century. A family back in the 1950’s was probably considered a husband, wife, and one or more children. Times have changed and families have become much different. The Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others book defines family as a, “Unit made up of any number of persons who live in relationship with one another over time in a common living space who are usually, but not always, united by marriage and kinship” (Beebe, Beebe & Redmond, 243). Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have a better perspective of life. As I have grown up I have noticed that my entire background has influenced by who I am.

When I first started this project I didn’t know a lot about my family history. I was told that my mom’s side was from Germany and that my dad’s side is from Ireland and while I was able to verify that I also learned so much more. I was about to located two different 4th great grandparents on Ancestry.com and uncover over 40 relatives that I never knew about dating back until 1800. I am grateful for what I have learned in the process of writing this paper because without it I may have never learned about my true culture and the family I come from.

As young children my grandparents, on both my maternal and paternal sides, immigrated to the United States from Norway. Both my mother and father were born and raised in Seattle, Washington. A strength throughout my family is the longevity of the women. Although my maternal grandmother, aunt, and mother have all battled breast cancer, they were able to discover it early. Accessible health care provided each of them with the opportunity to continue their lives with little repercussions. All three of them are now in excellent health. Additionally, my paternal grandmother is currently 82 and does not have any health issues. My family strongly values physical activity and healthy eating habits. My family does things and has traditions just as any other family in the world. My family has the typical holiday get-togethers and family reunions every four years where you see the weird aunts and uncles who know exactly who you are and you just stand there like, “oh gosh, do I know this one?” Along with the typical family traditions, we also have our own.

I remember our last goodbye, the last words exchanged, the ending of something beautiful. People you care about have big impacts on who you turn out to be. They guide you, teach you, protect you, love you, hurt you, but most importantly they are there for you. He was gone before I could even blink. And left me all alone. But family helped me through this journey and one day I hope to help others like others have helped me.

You walk into a humid gym. It reeks of chalk and feet. The music is playing and it seems like everyone is talking at once. You walk around the corner and parents are sitting in gray stands gossiping. You look straight ahead and see girls working out on different apparatuses. Coaches are explaining drills to some, and giving corrections to others. With so many people talking, you can't hear what the coaches are saying. You only see their lips moving as they talk to the kids. Girls are in suim suit looking uniforms. They all look different ages, ranging from 4-18 years old. The girls you watch do a skill, jump off the beam, then talk happily to their friends. They look like their focused when performing, but when their done they all laugh and talk at once. My friends and family use different traits to describe me depending on the atmosphere we're in.

“Caio, Caio, Caio” Everyone says as I enter through the old crumbling door into the main room. The tomato and basil smells from the kitchen make their way to my nose. “Come va?” “Sembri proprio tuo padre!” Everyone is screaming to tell me something and then my grandmother screams “Okay, that’s enough!” Silence swept the room. Everyone was gathered around like they were ready for a ceremony. With red cheeks and sweat running down his face, my grandfather introduced everyone. Every person coming up and kissing me on each cheek. The small stuffy room smelled like pasta and only had one window for enough light to shine through to see the mustiness in the room. It was an only house with crosses up in every room. All of the family is Catholic and it showed immensely through their personalities. Everyone broke up and spread throughout the creaky old house.

My family is the most important thing to me in my life. We have gone through a lot of loss and trauma, and became stronger because of it.

My mom comes in late at night, hiding something in her front pocket. She shelters this unknown object as if it’s a secret only she can know. She stares my father in the eyes and expresses how this is a gift from god, and he certainly can’t get mad at her for it. He sighs with the look of “what have you done now,” plastered on his face. She reveals the secret to her family by taking her arms away from the pocket. Suddenly a furry creature pops its head out to look at his new world. She laid him on the floor and he started sniffing around his forever home. Little did we know that this dog would be the best thing to happen to this family. This puppy would become more than just a friend, he’d become part of the family. He taught our family true happiness, loyalty and love.

my family is a strange one to say the least, m ybrothers names is jacob hitt baldowski and he's a good brother, he can tell when im not in a good mood, he tries to get me into a better mood but it almost always leads to a fight where i end up getting hurt.

I grew up in a very normal family with a mom, dad, one brother and three sisters. Since I’m the baby of the family, my mom stayed home until I started school. My mom worked in payroll and accounting, and my dad was a computer engineer. My brother is the oldest and did his best to tease all four younger sisters equally. He was very good at his “job”, but I knew he loved me because he opened doors for me and even braided my hair on occasion. My three older sisters watched out for me, especially my oldest sister; she became my second mom. My sisters fought a bit, but it wasn’t anything horrible or abnormal. We were a pretty happy family that did a lot of fun things together and were loved by our wonderful parents. At least that’s what I remembered, but there were times that I wondered if I was loved at all. Was I just the baby of five kids, five years younger than my closest sibling, and easily forgotten?

No one can’t meet a family like mine’s. My family is well diversified. Every family member plays an important role in all my family’s lives. In my family, there are four people: my father, my mother, my little brother and me. My father is one who brings money home and is also responsible for organizing and planning family trips. My mother is the one who is in charge for making meals and makes sure everyone eats at the appropriate times. My little brother is the pet of the family. He actually doesn’t have any responsibilities, for he’s the pet. I am the rock of support in my family. I always go beyond my parents’ expectations. My wife and I moved from chicago about two years ago after we got married and moves to Austin, Texas. We were in the country part of texas. We’ve been married for about two years now. I really love her she means everything to me, we are very close we do everything together. My wife and I rode our bikes every morning to get exercise or at least be active most of the time. One morning my wife couldn’t ride with me because she had an appointment, so I decided to ride by myself.
