Community Influences - Culturally Antwone never felt like he was good enough due to his dark complexion and as seen in the film, explains to Cheryl about what he witnessed about how the children who were adopted from the orphanage. He explains that first the light-skinned girls were adopted, followed by the light-skinned boys, then the dark-skinned girls, and last but not least, the dark-skinned boys. His cultural and societal impact is also seen when Mrs. Tate points out that his mother did not want him and how his brother Keith is his superior due to him having a white man as a father and being lighter-skinned. The above being constant from such a young age taught Antwone his culture early on, in which he always carried with him. His neighborhood friendship with Jessie allowed him to feel a sense of safety, something he did not have anywhere else. His high school allowed him to feel competent and worthy as he achieved multiple certifications and a high school diploma. Then his social worker dropping him off at a local homeless shelter gave him a sense of hopelessness. When he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, he embraced the military culture. And although he was extremely uptight at first with his therapist, Dr. Davenport, he soon began to build a trusting relationship with an adult male, possibly the first time ever in his life. Medication Use - No medication use was defined throughout the film. Trauma/Violence and Impact on Behaviors - Some of the trauma and violence that
Some of my family norms are the love of many sports such as Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Golf. America norms are choices that are not demanded by specific cultures. I believe they are choices you can make but will not be reprimanded if you do not choose one. Some of the frequent Cultural foods that were eaten with my family growing up as a child were rice and pinto beans. I believe this comes from the different cultures rooted within my family. My culture experiences many misunderstandings of who we are and what we stand for in society. Some examples of police brutality, racial profiling, style of dress, and the slang used when speaking. Historically, racism existed and continues to exist in today’s
Families, as units, are extremely complex and vary drastically from one another. A person might be under the impression that his or her own family is nothing special, especially if they are accustomed to their family’s routines. After analyzing my own family through the sociological lenses of an assortment of scholars, it is now clear that it is not as simple as it seems. Sociologically analyzing my family through the divorces that have occurred in my life makes it clear that divorce can have an impact on a variety of family dynamics, such as my parents and their jobs and domestic duties, the amount of involvement they have with their friends and family, as well as my financial dependence on my parents.
The perspective showed in this book is cultural, as their environments have shaped Wes Moore and the other Wes Moore as well as their nationality and social community. Even know both Wes Moore’s grew up in fairly similar ways their choices are the one thing that made them different in the end. This book explains how both boys are surrounded by older kids that have surrounded themselves with drugs to the point where they wouldn’t know another way to live. From this both Wes Moore’s are already immersed into the drug culture and environment that all it takes is one wrong decision for them to be like the older kids. Being African American in the late 1990’s has a big impact on the way people
Antwone wasunaware of racism from the earlier parts of his childhood. When Antwone thought of white people he identified them with doctors, social service workers and nurses. When Ms. Pickett received a new foster son named Keith, Antwone did not know how to respond and he began second guessing himself. Antwone at some point began to notice that Keith was beginning to get better treatment then the other kids and he knew it was because of the color of his skin and texture of his hair. Antwone began to realize that having lighter skin made Keith get better treatment. Thus, Antwone began associating light skin with good treatment. When Mrs. Pickett’s biological daughter Lizzie called Antwone “chocolate” it caused him to feel like being dark skin was a disgrace and from that moment on Antwone began to hate dark skin (Fisher
Human behavior can be explored by taking a look at the different aspects of a person’s life. These aspects include the biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual. These aspects can help social workers better understand the background history of a person’s life and gather information in order to do an accurate assessment of a person. This paper does not intend to make an assessment but it’s rather an informative paper in order to discover and understand the various systems of a person’s life. Furthermore this paper will also focus on how these systems interact with one another.
Family is an important aspect of society. Keeping a family stable is a hard task and the definition of family has expanded from what it used to be because nuclear families are not the norm nowadays. Throughout history the African-American family has had to face traumatic events such as slavery, the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Civil Rights Movement. The racism, segregation, and discrimination that followed these movements have also played an integral role in developing the black family. It takes diligence, strength, and courage in order to be able to persevere through hardship. Society as a whole has tried to undermine the black family by implementing in them a false identity of inferiority. If there are strong nuclear black families today, that means that powerful people in history have been forced to step up in order to make a difference within their community. From the beginning of the play to the very end, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun displays the vital theme of family. In the play there are multiple generations within the Younger Family’s household. The different generations come to show how the African-American family has had to evolve over time. A Raisin in the Sun highlighted the difficulties that families have in order to be able to overcome poverty, aspirations, and the society.
The movie Antwone Fisher (2009) is biographical drama based upon the life of Antwone Quenton Fisher (Black, Washington, 2002). The main character Antwone “Fish” Fisher is a 25-year-old African American male in the United States Navy. Antwone relives and processes his traumatic past with the Navy psychiatrist, Dr. Davenport, after being demoted and restricted to the ship for assault on a superior officer (Black, Washington, 2002). Dr. Davenport is ordered to provide Antwone with three sessions to assess his mental health for reinstatement to active duty (Black, Washington, 2002). Antwone relates his aggressive behavior to racial remarks he endured from a White peer (Black, Washington, 2002).
This theme is carried through Black Boy by describing Wright’s challenges facing racial stereotypes. As an African American living in the South, he is stripped of his individuality and grouped together with others of his race as a violent, criminal, and inferior class of people. When Wright
Around the same time, he began to notice other races and his classmates began to notice his race and comment on it. He said how this memory resonates with him because it was the first time he felt out of place because of something he couldn’t control. George further explained the feeling as knowing on some level that everything was created with someone that was not him in mind, that society was not best fit for him to succeed. A second early childhood experience George remembers well is having a sit down conversation with his family where they told him that some people would discriminate against him and hate him just for the color of his skin. This was a very startling and nerve racking conversation for a young child to have. George feels that race has shaped his upbringing from the very start and these are just a few of the moments where race played a pivotal role in his early life. He believes that there is an innumerable amount of examples like these from his preschool days that are stuck in his subconscious.
Ethnicity differences are apparent from one family to another. Language, beliefs, and values passed down from our ancestors define who we are in the world. As America becomes more diverse, it is important to understand how a family’s culture can influence differences from your own. I will be comparing and contrasting family life’s between African Americans and Europeans. As a person with European descent, I have experienced many situations where my views have conflicted with those from other cultures. The object of the research is to better understand the difference between cultures and express value in unique families. I believe it is every human being’s responsibility to understand and appreciate other families for who they are.
Wong has focused his study on ethnicity and psychological development, one of many approaches and only a small portion of how ethnicity influences development; I will include some personal thoughts of mine as well as concepts I have learned from class and other readings. Some things to keep in mind when accessing a child and his/her performance in the classroom are social situations and psychological processes—including stereotypes, experiences of ethnic discrimination, ethnic identity, and
When I consider family systems, I am reminded of a metaphor I heard while in undergraduate school about a mobile. A mobile is used to soothe an infant, normally placed above a crib or basinet. Each of its parts are in balance, when working correctly, however if one section becomes off balance the objects become out of sync. This is true with families. If each member of the family unit is doing their part, there is complete balance or homeostasis (Henson). This balance is viewed as a healthy family system. However, if one part of the unit becomes off balance, it disrupts the whole unit causing an unhealthy response with possible long term consequences. As families grow, each member plays an equally important role in the family unit. Children learn quickly the importance of relationships and adapt quickly to their environment. No one can deny the family unit is the most complex system in existence.
Fasting and Feasting is a novel written by Anita Desai that narrates the story of the protagonist, Uma, and her family’s life. The novel is divided in two parts. Part one deals with Uma’s life in India until the tragic death of her cousin Anamika, and part two tells the story of Uma’s brother, Arun, as he spends his summer with the Pattons, a typical American suburban family. Throughout the novel, Desai explores the theme of family life and uses the novel’s two settings, America and India, to compare and contrast the values and customs that constitute each respective culture’s family life. At first glance, American and Indian families are foils of one another because of the relationships between the family members that composed them. As
My family background and upbringing has affected who I am today, and most significantly, how I revere myself. Raised by vocationally educated parents, the standard of gender roles prevailed when my below average elementary scores lacked the capacity to improve throughout adolescence. Allowing more time for my older siblings to study and permitting both parents to work full-time, I became the housekeeper. Having not been tested for dyslexia, I barely graduated high school.
Why does a person behave the way they do? Why does each person have a distinct personality? Scientists believe that this has to do with nature and nurture. Meaning, a person's social activities, and personality are dictated by the traits they have inherited from their parents, but also from environmental influences. There are four agents of socialization that have been chosen as the most impacting on a person's life. These agents of socialization influence how a person will behave, influence, and think among society. Although the family has been categorized as the most influential agent of socialization, this is not the only agent that impacts a person life. In this essay, I will go over how family, peer groups, school, and mass media affect a person from an early age and the impacts it brings to society.
