All families have conflicts that they need help resolving. Family therapy is defined as a type of psychological counseling. This type of therapy is typically short term. Family therapy improves communication, understanding, and resolves conflicts. It can be provided by a clinical social worker, licensed therapist, or a psychologist. It doesn’t have to include all family members, often times it is only the ones willing to participate. The goal of family therapy sessions is to teach skills that will help the family get through conflicts even after attending sessions.
The origins of family therapy happend around the time of social work movements it the 19th century. The formal development of family therapy goes back to the 1940s and 1950s. The American Association of Marriage Counselors was founded in 1942. Initially there was a strong influence from psychoanalysis and social psychiatry. After the learning theory and behavior therapy, these clinicians began to use these theories and applied them to the functioning of families. By the 1960’s many schools of family therapy had emerged. Family therapy has grown tremendously from where it started.
Family therapy can help mend relationships with spouses, children, or other family members. While attending sessions you may talk about specific issues such as financial problems or marital problems, substance abuse, mental illness, or conflict between parents and children.
