Family violence is a multifaceted problem in Canada. In the last 20 years, the majority of the provinces and territories have created legislation to address the issue (1). As of 2011, 26% of all crime in Canada was that of family violence with the majority of the victims being female (2). The economic impact in Canada is estimated to be $7.4 billion with over 80% of that cost falling to the victim (3). While the prosecution of these crimes is high, the conviction rate remains low (4). The pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury stated, “Bruises are a much neglected branch of injuries” (5). Given that 71% of the reported family violence cases are physical assaults, most of these victims will have bruises of various ages (6). In such cases, …show more content…
It would not be until the 1990s that a paper would highlight the importance of the determination of the bruise age as evidence and to begin the scientific study this subject. The researchers first conducted a review of the scientific material in regards to bruise age estimation. This review showed that the science behind the estimation of bruise age was significantly lacking (5). These researchers also conducted visual scientific study of the bruise age based on colouration observed and the known time of injury (5). They examined photographs of bruises of various individuals against a colour chart in order to asses the colouration seen versus the age of the bruise (5). They established one of the first timelines for the estimation of the bruise age through the colours observed in a bruise. This study is beneficial to the furtherance of the science behind the estimation of bruise age. Firstly, this study highlighted the need for the scientific determination of bruise age for forensic evidence (5). The researchers were motivated by the recent cases of family violence and the need for stronger evidence in these cases (5). Secondly, it presented the lack of scientific rigour applied to the determination of bruising (5). By highlighting the issues within the scientific community regarding the determination of bruise age, they could define where the research was lacking

One of the main reasons women stays in the home where they are experiencing domestic abuse is because they do not feel safe leaving their home. Domestic violence victims are being turned away from refuges and being sent to motels and caravan parks, the refuges instead take in homeless people.

Knowledge of domestic violence is becoming prevalent in the United States and around the world. Family violence, teen dating violence and intimate partner violence are being talked about openly more; they are also becoming known as abuse and not something that is just “ok” or “just how a person is”. Beliefs and laws are changing toward nonviolence as discussed in this report.
Family and Domestic Violence is an issue that affects between one in three and one in five women (Mouzos & Makkai, 2004). In 2014 the Western Australia Police released the statistic that there had been over 40,000 calls for assistance in cases of domestic violence between 2013 and 2014 (Western Australia Police, 2014). Domestic Violence is responsible for the majority of physical injuries to women and is a contributing factor to around 60% of homicides with female victims (Shackelford & Mouzos,
I would consider the patient’s safety to be of utmost importance, and I would not want to distance the patient even further by breaking the trust of the patient. Therefore, I would respect her choice to not mention anything in front of her husband, as confidentiality also plays a role in maintaining safety and security. It would be vital to remain sensitive and supportive throughout the duration of the history and exam when further asking about the bruises. My questioning would seek to learn more about the nature of the incident.
This paper will focus mainly on the history and the various techniques that forensic facial reconstruction has to offer. It will also go over some problems or an issue that is process has faced over the years. The Daubert Standard will discuss and how facial reconstruction was allowed as evidence thru this standard. I will go over all the periods of time that facial reconstruction was used. Computerized and Clay reconstruction will be discussed and how they have help investigators solved current and cold case crimes.
What this definition fails to recognise is that not all domestic violence can be defined as this. Sometimes, the scars that hurt the most are the psychological and emotional ones. We believe that abuse that creates these types of scars is grossly unrecognised, and that the government and society need to recognise how widespread this type of abuse is. And not just recognise it, but provide greater support and more developed strategies for responding to this
Introduction. Chronic pain is a problem that has far reaching public health implications. Much research has identified the role of intimate partner violence victimization on individuals who suffer from chronic pain (Balousek, Plane, & Fleming, 2007). However, a dearth of research exists examining the role of chronic pain in intimate partner violence perpetration. In an effort to develop targets for violence prevention and intervention, more research is needed to further understand the prevalence and risk factors of intimate partner violence perpetration in populations of men with chronic pain. In addition, it is imperative that research advance beyond identifying risk factors of partner violence to examining the influence of protective factors,
Since 1692, bite marks has been used as evidence in courts. Throughout the years, bitemarks has been introduced to many criminal prosecutions and has been used as primary evidence to prosecute many individuals, however, in recent years, the use of bite marks as evidence raises a controversial topic of whether it is accurate and reliable. Although, the use of bite marks as evidence has rightfully convicted many individuals such as Ted Bundy, there are also many cases where individuals are wrongfully convicted. A number of exonerations have also occurred due to incorrect bite mark identification. The use of bite mark as evidence should not be used in courts as there are multiple factors that can provide inaccurate results.
The victim had complaint of pain and a bruise on her left shin. No other visible injuries.
Family violence is a serious issue, in fact, in Canada, “an average of 172 homicides are committed every year at the hands of a family member” (Department of Justice Canada,2017). The concept of family violence is something that has deep roots that can only be explained by reviewing and analyzing the historical context of each type of family violence. Family violence is a multifaceted problem that has many parts, and each part has their own historical development. Intimate partner violence has been happening “since the 1950s but organized responses started developing in the 1960s after the feminist activism with violence against women being normal prior to that” (Leavitt, n.d.). Elder abuse first appeared as a national issue back in the 1970s with the government creating “protective services” for the elders due to their inability to assist themselves. (Wolfe,2003) Children have been abused and neglected since prehistoric period with children being long seen as “family property”, with “fathers having the ability to sell, mutilate or kill their
Scott’s grandmother was also involved in the altercation and confirms that Mr. Scott and Mrs. Carpenter had been in an altercation and that both had been drinking that afternoon. Mr. Scott’s grandmother stated that she also got in between Mr. Scott and Mrs. Carpenter to get them separated from one another and in the process Mr. Scott bit her on the left thumb. Mr. Scott’s grandmother advised us that she does not wish to press charges on Mr. Scott. I observed on Mr. Scotts left thumb a small mark on it that looked like blood under the surface of the skin.
