Fashion as a way of expressing freedom or is it an expression of rebellion?
I recognize style a way of communication and looking at the consequences it could cause. It is either an identity or a rebellious expression to sending out a message. Clothing style, which depends on the person's mood, weather, sad or happy and not to forget a demonstration of political issues. But resulting in chaos with the officers and inflicting fights till place behind bars/jail. Should we put the fashion as a way of expressing freedom or is it an expression of rebellion?

Fashion has not always been observed as oppressive (as a way of communicating), but at the same time, it does encourage people to conform and follow a trend. Conversely, it has also been used as a statement of freedom by those oppressed by government,
“Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new.” (Fashion Quotes 1) The words once spoken by Henry David Thoreau are politically correct. People often look at Elizabethan‘s choice of fashion and ridicule everything about it from the hair, down to the stockings. As it appears, fashion has always been a broad topic of discussion in the world. Whether it is NY Fashion Week or a Macy’s fashion show, fashion is something that has always been an eye catcher. Fashion has been around for many years, and whether we know it or not, Elizabethan fashion has influenced the way modern fashion is today.
Bennett (2005, p.??? ) argues that “Fashion provides one of the most ready means through which individuals can make expressive visual statements about their identities” . It is said that clothes play a big role in the society: it can either identify or hide a person and in term of revealing identity garments can show one’s tastes, politic position, status in the society, ‘power and success’, educational and cultural background and sexual preferences (Bennett, 2005). Fashion not only helps to express but it also gives a personal satisfaction when appearing in a favourable way and a pleasure of wearing a good fabrics. (Bennett, 2005). There is no one true meaning of the garment and the cultural meaning can vary from the one intended by its designer. The clothes can signify different things depending on the wearers and their background, political, economical and cultural context and the environment. This is the reason why the message sent by the wearer through the garment can be different from the message received by the society (Bennett, 2005). Fashion identifies not only different individuals, but also it can be a mean of a social groups and certain garments can show an individual belonging to a social group or subculture (Bennett, 2005).
Though fashion is considered to be very relevant to women, there are also many women who are against fashion, finding it to be “oppressive” and damaging to their gender (Hollows 139).
In schools everywhere both boys and girls are forced into modifying their normal clothing style to something the fits into their school´s strict rules. Students are having to look for clothes that are in the school´s standards, not what they like to wear. Our school´s dress code should be revised to more realistic expectations from the students. Students have the right to express themselves through their clothing. ¨… how a person dresses is a kind of self- expression...
Fashion always changes and when it changes, it pressures people into adapting the new style. An example of this was when people who lived in the 80s look back at their style choices and then they regret what they have worn in the past. The people then excuse their style choices with the phrase, “It was the style back then”. People changed their look so they can fit in and look like everyone else. It is disappointing to know that society pressures people into surrendering their individuality so they can be accepted by others.
Fashion is everything to society and the media. The fashion industry has transformed into a necessity in the life of people. Everyone wants to look good, feel fabulous and feel as if we belong with everyone else. The envy and desire to wear certain things and look a certain way all come, from wearing the latest fashion handbags, accessories, dresses, shoes, and the list goes on. But, when is considering fashion into an individual’s life going too far to the extreme? Many do not consider the whereabouts of fashion materials and how the environment is affected by the mere existence of certain garments. Some may believe these objects grow on trees. But that is clearly not the case. Even though it would be nice. The fashion industry as a
People everywhere find self-expression through what they wear. Many people today are judged by what they wear. Although one doesn’t want it to, clothing can place you in a certain group or social class. Even 457 years ago, when the Elizabethan Era was recognized by its profound range of fashion, clothing showed wealth, inheritance, and social class. People today are allowed to wear what they desire, but during the Elizabethan Era many women were restricted from many fabrics or materials, colors, and patterns.
Fashion reflects the attitudes of a society more than any other art form. Like art, fashion is a material record of the ideals that swayed the nations at the time of their creation. Through examining the styles, and tastes of a particular era, we can realize where the interests and priorities of a time lie. As Frank Parsons wrote in his 1920 study, The Psychology of Dress, "There is surly no better field in which to trace the devious paths of human thought than in that of clothes, where man has ever given free play to self expression, in a way which, thought not always a credit to his intelligence, is yet quite true to his innermost self, whether he will acknowledge it or
The fashion industry is rapidly growing and constantly generating new fashion trends almost weekly. Fashion for some may seem ridiculous and unnecessary; but fashion is not just a meaningless usage of article of clothing or farcical materials sew together for coverage. There is more to fashion than meets the eyes, fashion is precious and significant. It is a reflection of self-image, it speak the ream about who we are and how we review ourselves. Not only is fashion the reflection of self-image but also the reflection of our history as Coco Channel have said, “Fashion is not something that exist in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Fashion
Fairchilds argues that debates over women’s political rights were neither the only nor the most significant causes for the emergence of Revolutionary regulations of dress. She suggests that these regulations emerged due to the policy of consumption and consumer goods, which was shaped by two contradictory notions: the notion that consumers had the right to buy what they wanted and the notion that goods had symbolic, formative and didactic traits that reflected and shaped the consumer’s personality. Through the examination of the Old Regime luxury debates, Fairchilds explains the beginnings of these ideas and how they influenced Revolutionary policies towards dress. In addition, she suggests that the concept that fashion reflects an individual’s
Fashion, one of the biggest art movements that has made a huge global impact on people from all over the world. It has been around since the old ages, when man first walked the earth, and continues to grow and change throughout time. Fashion is primarily a way that people can express themselves truly and freely. With fashion, there is no limitations on who you can and cannot be, because everyone is different and everyone believes in something else. One place where fashion desperately struggles is in the workplace or at school. Some workplaces and schools have very strict dress codes, which can prevent one from being able to fully express themselves.
Cunningham (2016) defines fashion as the manner of dressing that is accepted as being in style. Fashion can segregate people from one another simply by the style you wear or the color you have on. The different style of fashion represents people character in life. Fashion makes many people immune to different change in society. Fashion reflects and has influences on the people you tend to interact and associate with because of the different fashion of clothes you wear. The different fashion of clothes is a form of self-expression. Fashion can tell who you are and what types of styles you like to wear. Fashion has made society believe what is popular in stores is fashionable. Fashion can also include hints about people wealth, religion, and social status. Fashions bring out who you are based on what you
Ever since their invention many centuries ago, clothes have been used as a way of communicating. The message communicated relies on a number of factors including the social background of both the communicator and the receiver, and the context in which the message is communicated. Although at times the exact message or symbolism one is trying to portray may not be clear, it is evident that clothing has long been embraced as one of the best ways to project one’s desired personal image to those around them.
When you think of the word fashion, what do you think? Do you think about outrageous runway outfits? Cocktail dresses? Tracksuits? Whatever your impression of fashion, it is obvious that fashion plays an important role in today's society. We are judged by our clothing and appearance on an everyday basis, so why not make the most of our choices?
To gain knowledge of how we communicate to others through the way we dress, we have to first understand what identity is. Identity is what we choose to represent ourselves as, be that a gender identity, a sexual identity; it is completely up to the individual as a person to make that choice. Identity forms the basis of one’s pride and being accepted socially only adds to that ego and integrity. The psychology of the matter is the way we dress is more or less based on our moods, habits, inspirations, past, present and future. The character of a person is reflected in the way that they dress, Clothing can act as a simple glance into someone’s life, as we are already know that different clothing can represent different means of culture; Clothes are used a language to communicate with society and to commonly let them know what you want to be viewed as.
