In the Time of the Butterflies revolves around the Mirabal sisters, women living in a very patriarchal, “macho” society. Their personal struggles are part of the power of their story, as they stand not only as symbols of rebellion against Trujillo, but at the same time as loving, independent women with husbands and children. Alvarez shows how the resistance against women in politics can even be propagated by the women themselves, as both Mamá and Patria initially express sentiments that women are inferior to men, or else are somehow “purer” and so shouldn’t dirty themselves with politics. In talking to the interview woman in the present day, Dedé says that women “followed their husbands,” but she knows that this is an excuse, as she is the
During the time of the discovery day dance, Trujillo was desiring to dance with the misses. He came across one lady who seemed to be perfect for him, one who stood out better than the rest. She was a fine woman in his eyes. So, he chose her to dance with. They appeared to have had a casual conversation for awhile it seemed.

From the book, In the Time of the Butterflies, the Mirabal sisters sacrificed a lot in order to fight for justice and social change against the oppressive regime of the Dominican dictator, Trujillo. However, while fighting for their freedoms and rights, Trujillo had them imprisoned and assassinated. Their actions motivated many others to fight for the cause, eventually leading to Trujillo’s assassination by none other than his own generals. While some claim that it was not justified for the sisters to make such extreme sacrifices in order to fight against Trujillo’s oppressive regime, others say that their actions proved to be beneficial and helpful for the country. I believe that their actions were heroic and justified as they were fighting

There are several events that lead the Mirabal sisters to oppose the “Trujillo regime”. The first event is at their high school play when Sanita almost shot Trujillo with the arch. After that day Minerva never saw Sanita again. Also, Trujillo’s party play a big role in the events that lead the Mirabal sisters to oppose to his regime. Trujillo invite the Mirabal family to his party, where he asked Minerva to dance with him. Trujillo was inappropriate with Minerva, and Minerva act with an instinct response (with a slap). That respond was really scandalous because everyone sees Trujillo as the God of the Dominican Republic. That lead Trujillo taking Minerva’s father into jail, where after his release die because he was tortured by the military.
In the Time of the Butterflies Essay During the setting in which In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez is written—20th century Dominican Republic—a woman’s body was seen as a disposable object to men. However, the Mirabal sisters choose to go against this gender stereotype and instead express themselves in their own way, using it as a form of expression to show their involvement with the revolution. In Butterflies, Alvarez uses the female body as a symbol to fight against societal restriction placed on females—the more significant a change in the body, the more involved the sister was in the revolution.
