What is government? Government is the governing body of nation, state, or community. Government determines the way any group of people are ran. There a several different types of government used all around the world. In the United States for example, uses a type of government that has three different branches of power. The Legislative Branch is the law making branch. The Judicial branch is the courts and the low enforcement. Lastly, the Executive branch is the presidential branch. “Each has its own responsibilities and at the same time they work together to make the country run smoothly and to assure that the rights of citizens are not ignored or disallowed.” (Osborne) Usually, governments break up the responsibilities into two or more groups. Two very influential writers wrote about their views on government; Lao-tzu and Machiavelli. These writers were in very different times which makes it very interesting to compare their views. Lao-tzu and Machiavelli had very different views on the ultimate purpose of government, the obligations of government leaders, and the main work of the state.

The Three Branches of the Government Our government is made up of three branches, the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial, which all work in conjunction to balance each other’s powers. The Constitution set up these branches to create order within the government and to limit the power of any singular unit of government. These branches are all separate, yet united, with the singular goal of maintaining the country’s freedom and aiding the citizens under it. The Legislative Branch of government is run by the U.S. Congress, which is made up of the Senate and House of Representatives.

The United States government system is for the security and happiness of the people and for the union of this country. The government keeps us safe, and it keeps us free. There are three branches of government: Judicial branch, the legislative branch, and the executive branch. The Supreme Court is head over the judicial branch, Congress is the head of the legislative branch, and the President is the head over the executive branch. Congress makes the laws, the Supreme Court interprets the law and the President enforces the law (house.gov)

On September 17, 1787, the U.S Constitution was ratified and the greatest experiment in US history began. Realizing the need to establish a “more perfect union”, the founding fathers of our country created a three branch system of government. “The term "trias politica" or "separation of powers" was coined by Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, an 18th century French social and political philosopher.” (NCSL.Org) The “framers” of the constitution were well-established and educated men who studied politics and understood the grave importance of securing a democratic government. The first and most fundamental division of our government is “federalism or the constitutional allocation of governmental powers between the federal and state governments” (24). Throughout the years federalism has changed from what it was first described in the constitution. Contemporary federalism is what is used in our modern government, and with the dilemmas that we have now a more centralized government has been used, which was not planned when our government was created. The second division is separation of powers. This division has a major impact on public policies. The constitution “distributes the powers of the federal government among three branches, each capable of applying checks and balances to the other two” (29). These three divisions can either work together, which makes policymaking smooth and able to get things done, or they can veto each other which makes policymaking harder and nothing gets done. The third division is subgovernments, or can also be described as iron triangles. This division has three actors involved the first is interest groups, the second is congressional committees or subcommittees, and the third is the administrative agency (31-33). These actors work off each other to help get policies implemented. These three division help compose our public policies in the United States.

The government is divided into three branches. Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. James Madison states in his Federalist papers, “Liberty requires that the great departments of powers should be separate and distinct.” Legislative writes the laws for and consists of the House of Representatives and Senate. Executive branch passes the laws the legislative branch makes and the President is the head of this branch. Judicial branch decides if laws are constitutional or not and consists of the Supreme Court. This keeps one branch from getting too much power.

Everywhere you look or go, there are no smoking signs and laws that are put in place to prevent one from smoking , whether it’s the restaurants, schools, government buildings or one’s own home. In fact it’s one of the most controversial topics discussed in today’s society and although they have been put in place to protect the health of everyone, many smokers believe that smoking laws are unconstitutional. Like nature, the United States government has evolved to meet the demands of an ever growing population, the increasing terrorist threat, and a new state of mind in terms of what government should look like. Each branch of the federal system plays a key role in controlling the populace. The Executive branch handles day-to-day maintenance of the federal government, makes sure laws are enforced and carried out, as well as represents the U.S. to foreign interests. The Legislative branch passes laws and allocates funds for use in running the federal government and providing assistance to the states. A national government is the government, or political authority, that controls a nation. The strong national government consists of three branches–executive, legislative and judicial–along with a system of checks and balances to ensure no single branch would have too much power. The Executive Branch is the branch of government that is responsible for the day-to-day management of the state. The main task of the Legislative Branch is to make the laws. The Judicial Branch is responsible for interpreting the laws passed by the legislative branch and enforced by the executive branch.

The public officials representing Michigan are a diverse group of people. Prior to completing the Michigan Officials journals I thought majority of Michigan officials were Caucasian wealthy republican men. My research for the public official journals allowed me to see that wasn’t the case. Throughout my research I’ve learned about different positions of U.S and Michigan government and how each role works together to create a successful government.

The process included three different branches of government that helped create, review, and enforce laws to make sure they were reasonable. The Legislative Branch is comprised of the Congress, Senate, and House of Representatives, and their job is to make laws. The Executive Branch consists of the President, Vice President, and Cabinet. Their job is to carry out the laws made by the Legislative Branch. The Judicial Branch is made up of the Supreme Court, and other Federal Courts, and their role is to evaluate laws, to ensure they are reasonable.

The federal government has a multitude of programs all requiring continuous review to ensure efficiency. Americans do not have to search far to find examples of government fraud, waste, and abuse. The federal deficit crisis makes any examples of program waste unacceptable. A program review process needs to have clear value criteria and allow for itemized reductions to gain efficiency without losing effectiveness. There are several alternatives to federal program efficiencies including empowerment to state governments, consolidation of duplicate programs, privatization, and straight up elimination of non-value added activities. I have selected three recommended domestic programs for adjustment. The recommendations are to provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, require states to cover 1/4th of the cost for food stamps, and reduce the cost of the federal workforce. Impact of implementing these recommendations is a total of $520 billion to debt reduction.
