Domesticated cats are currently spread wide and far across the world, posing as the cute creatures we know them as today, but how did they get there? What exactly did they domesticate from, and in what ways were they transported around the world? In her article, “DNA Tells Tale of How Cats Conquered the World,” Tina Hesman Saey examines and analyzes these questions, using the research and findings from Eva-Maria Geigl, Thierry Grange, and Carlos Driscoll.

The first thing temple Grandin explains is that cats domesticated themselves because early human civilizations had lots of mice for the cats to eat and pray on. Then she explains that when cats were domesticated there brains got smaller and they purr even when they are adults also meow. The next big point that the author explains that cats are closer to their wild counterparts than any other animal which means that they can easily return to the wild than say dogs. Temple Grandin then explains that cats weren't domesticated when dogs were because early humans wanted something to protect them and the cat being small could fight like a dog could. Cats entered the New World on the Mayflower. A new breed called the American Shorthair was created. This tame cat would have been distinguishable from the wild cats by their color patterns, hair length, and size. The tame cat could help hunt for birds and rodents because they are hardy, tough, and athletic. It is also likely that the tame cat bred with the wild cats, so new breeds that had the characteristics of the wild ones entered the domestic stock. Cats were not always liked though. There were many superstitions about cats, which made people afraid of them. The cat became known as an indispensable pet for all the genuine witches. The black cat also became known as one of the symbols of Satan. These superstitions may have started because nightly, silent expeditions of feral cats, or their weird cries and shining eyes in the dark. So, cats have not always been accepted as a domestic pet.

Whether it is an inside cuddle buddy, or an outside mice killer, cats make wonderful pets. While dogs stay dirty, drool, and bark, cats clean themselves, are clean animals, and meow quietly. Cats are warm and fuzzy and love to cuddle while they take naps. Dogs are too rambunctious and energetic. Cats make better pets than dogs.

Dogs have been domesticated for as long as 135,000 years which makes cats seem fairly new to the household. Both dogs and cats were originally used for reasons that benefited human work. Now- a-days, dogs are far more useful with job skills. When I was little, I used to live outside. Not literally, but just in the sense that I was an outdoors kind of child. I enjoyed helping my dad with household projects and was ecstatic when I found out he would build a tree house for me. While he built the major part of it with dangerous equipment, I put myself in charge of collecting sticks to try and “help” my father put it together. Sooner or later, Nemo, my dog, was running back and forth with sticks in his mouth helping me collect what I needed.

Wildcats are more aggressive and independent than domestic cats, which makes sense since these characteristics are more beneficial to their survival.

Dogs’ eagerness to please their masters is also a commendable trait which cats simply don’t have. Without this, it would be very difficult to train dogs for the many jobs they now hold, from aiding law enforcement personnel and herding sheep, to seeing-eye dogs and even helping exterminators locate hard-to-find infestations. Cats came to the United States from Europe. They came from Egypt before that, and they were treated very special in Egypt because one of their gods was a cat. This is when they got domesticated, which was almost 4,000 years ago. Even though they have been domesticated they still do what every living thing does. In order for cats to survive they must get energy, move and grow, adapt to the environment protect themselves and reproduce.

Owning an animal can take up a lot of time. For most people time is of the essence, and spending a lot of time on an animal is unrealistic . Cats are able to live without their owners for days on end. They can usually find something to eat, and pee if plants for example. But dogs need to be put in kennels and looked after by another person. Dogs also have to be put on leashes when they are outside. Cats have the ability to roam freely because their owners do not have to worry about them causing a lot of trouble. A cat is allowed to be outside until late hours because owners know that the feline will make its way home, where as a dog at night is usually brought inside, or chained up outside.

While dogs and cats are a lot alike, you have to consider their differences before you choose your pet. As mentioned before cats do not require cleaning nor exercising or training, while dogs are in need of all these things. The musical “Cats” is an outstanding show that captivates audiences of all ages. It is based on a book of poems called, “Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats”, written by T.S. Eliot. “Cats” tells a nonsense story of different cats. The amazing music, unique costumes, and intricate dance choreography bring a breath-taking story to life that a leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.

While many horror films of the era painted their monsters in broad strokes, Both Cat People films play like steady handed psychological dramas; maneuvering in the shadows with subtle detail and control. While the films dutifully touch on a wide array of themes, I believe each picture has an overarching theme--Cat People's theme being the fear of women/women's sexual agency and sexual repression, while The Curse of the Cat People about imagination and parenting. I will be picking scenes from each film that I feel reinforce these themes.
