During the late 19th and early 20th century in America, the rise of Feminism challenged the traditional gender roles. The female authors of this time period represented realistic aspects of women’s struggles, which often reflected limitations from society and their own lives. The three female authors who advocated women’s struggles in their writings were Sojourner Truth, Willa Cather, and Edith Wharton. In the speech to the American Equal Rights Association, Truth reveals that women do not have rights to present their voices in the court. Cather addresses women’s devastating labor life after the marriage in “A Wagner Matinee.” Likewise, in “April Shower”, Wharton portrays men’s criticism upon economically successful women. American female authors of the late 19th and early 20th century demonstrates the ideas of Feminism by men objecting to representation in politics, prohibiting career over marriage, and criticizing economic self-sufficiency.

However, the problem of whether or not women should be equal to men has been around for much longer than any of us.

Since before the Bill of Rights were even completely formed, women were wanting the same rights as men. John Adams wife, Abigail, told him that she wanted womens rights in the amendments (Carr, 2015). The battle for women 's equal rights heightened during 1848-1920 when women, lead mostly by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, wanted the right to vote (Woman’s Rights Movement, n.d.). When women finally got the right to vote, the whole women 's movement went down, but never fully went away. In the 60’s the Equal Pay was passed. Also, in the past couple years, women have started to look at getting equal pay and to be treated equal as men.

Many people are often misinformed or given bad first impressions of feminism. However, feminism is equal rights for all people of different race, sex, gender, and sexuality. Many of the people that give feminism a bad name, include a self-proclaimed feminist that is running for presidency, and meninists who are satirical equal rights activists. In reality, feminism is pro-gender equality and opportunities for all types of people.

In the minds of many, feminism is confused with misandry, the belief that women should be more powerful than men; however, this could not be further from the truth. Feminism is women, men, and nonbinaries taking a stand, together, for equality. Fighting for unshaved female legs, fighting for late night walks through the park completely alone, and completely safe. Fighting for higher rates of self esteem and complete acceptance without judgment. Feminism tells males that it is okay to cry and show emotion. Feminism teaches the world that we are all the same, that we should strive for a better world for all. Feminism is the fight for equal rights and equal treatment in all areas of society, regardless of gender or sexual identity.

For years, women have been announcing that they are feminists, but some are taking it a little too far. Sarah Miller writes that what seems to be happening in our society is that women are taking a whole new meaning for feminism. They are trying to convey that women deserve even more rights than men and that these men are somehow the enemy, even though feminists should be fighting for equal rights.

Regardless, some of those actions would have probably been considered “feminism”, even though the term did not exist so nobody called it that. Nowadays the standards of what is considered feminism is much different. The question of whether or not Jane Eyre can be considered a feminist novel, can not simply be answered with a yes or no. At the time this book was written, it would be a feminist book because it was way ahead of its time, but compared to the feminist movement of the 21st century, it would not fit the standards of what is considered to be feminist. You can not say that Jane Eyre is either a feminist book or it is not, because nothing is black and white. Besides, parameters change, and something that was once labeled as one thing doesn 't have to be labeled that forever. It 's possible for it to have been a feminist book at one point and not be one for today’s standards.

Many times in life men do not think that women can do the same things that they can; whether it’s picking up boxes or being president. There will always be that “macho man” thought of the man being stronger than the woman. In many jobs women might do the exact same thing that men do except men are getting paid more than women even if it is an insignificant amount, it happens in many places and even though many people disapprove of it there are still jobs like that out there. And there are still employers who think that a woman should not be in the work force if so home. Many feminist have been working to solve this problem and there are still people who are working to solve and change many more of these problems, and even though in some places it doesn’t seem like it, feminism and feminists
