Feminist Criticism of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper

Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses her short story “The Yellow Wall-Paper” to show how women undergo oppression by gender roles. Gilman does so by taking the reader through the terrors of one woman’s changes in mental state. The narrator in this story becomes so oppressed by her husband that she actually goes insane. The act of oppression is very obvious within the story “The Yellow Wall-Paper” and shows how it changes one’s life forever.

The woman behind this work of literature portrays the role of women in the society during that period of time. "The Yellow Wallpaper" written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is a well written story describing a woman who suffers from insanity and how she struggles to express her own thoughts and feelings. The author uses her own experience to criticize male domination of women during the nineteenth century. Although the story was written fifty years ago, "The Yellow Wallpaper" still brings a clear message how powerless women were during that time.

Traditionally, men have held the power in society. Women have been treated as a second class of citizens with neither the legal rights nor the respect of their male counterparts. Culture has contributed to these gender roles by conditioning women to accept their subordinate status while encouraging young men to lead and control. In The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman discusses the oppression men have towards women through the story of a nameless narrator during the 19th century. In the story, the unknown narrator, a woman, is telling her struggle for freedom and her fight to escape from the subordination in her marriage with a physician. In the story, the narrator suffers an illness that prevents her from doing things she likes such as writing. Throughout her illness, the narrator slowly becomes aware of her situation and then starts to fight to change her living condition with her husband. Through the use of two major symbols established throughout the text, Gilman brings awareness of women’s struggle to end their oppression by men and their fight to change the way society is dominated by men. In addition, the symbols used by Gilman underline the way women suffrage awareness slowly began to spread during the 19th century.

During this period of male dominance, Gilman wrote "The Yellow Wallpaper" to prove a point and to "get Dr. Weir Mitchell to change his ways." (3). Gilman suffered from neurasthenic, melancholia, suicidal depression and after the birth of her child post partum depression. Gilman was a patient of Dr. Mitchell and was prescribed the "Rest Cure", which is to rest and never write again. Gilman follows the recommended prescription for a month but found it was weakening her intellect. "The Yellow Wallpaper" was written during the time of a patriarchal society and the reader becomes witness to male dominance. The male dominance in "The Yellow Wallpaper" represses the narrator's ability to control her own mental health.

In the narrative ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ Charlotte makes correlations between her trials and the character in her story. Charlotte shared many feelings and , even a personal sickness, with the character such as an temporary mental illness and other projections. One of the false restrictions even helped Gilman and her character with their disorder ; writing. It played a huge role in her recovery and assisted her goal for constructing ‘The Yellow Wallpaper.’ Relationships also played a huge part in translating Gilman’s goals. Which as the characters associations with her husband converted to Gilman’s treatment towards women. That there should be an equality and or the feminists outlook between men and women alike. Although even in the present there are inequality issues, the 19th century was based on the idea that women were to only have domestic duties while the men were in charge of the work force. Because of that, women were controlled in every aspect.
