Feminism is defined as “the advocacy of women’s right on the grounds of political, social, or economic equality to men.” Inspired by other, similar movements, women began their own push for equal rights and helped to improve the lives of many other Americans around them. However, feminism is more than the basic dictionary definition. Feminism is a movement that has greatly changed and has a different meaning to people of every race, age, background, and even gender. In 1848, the first wave of feminism swept through America, beginning at the Seneca Falls Convention. The women of this time mainly fought for voting rights as well as other equal rights to male peers. Along with fighting for their own rights, women of this time were constantly looking to fight for other oppressed groups, including African-Americans. The feminist movement’s agenda was to improve life in America for women, men, and children of all races. Supporting feminism in many other cultures around the world is a death sentence for women. Nearly 3.3 billion females today are still living in oppression. Deeply imbedded cultural ideas have led to countless acts of violence against women, discrimination, and a lack of education that would lead to a significantly better life for girls in countries such as Somalia, Afghanistan, and Nepal. Without education, these girls are forced into a life of ignorance, and therefore, no progress can be made. However, progress is made, albeit slowly, but more and more women are receiving the opportunity to get educated. Feminism in other countries often means danger however with help from feminists around the world hopefully life can be improved not only for every woman around the world, but for every human
