The story “Fences” by August Wilson, shows the struggle that a certain family goes through. This family is the Maxson family, each and every character in this story has a problem they face throughout their life whether it be a problem about money, choices, illness, or even love. The problem that Troy the father faces is that he is not satisfied with his life or love life. When he was younger he tried out for the pro baseball team and did not get in because of his race. Which left him distraught and led to all the problems his family faces. He feels he has more of responsibility than a life that he should be living. I see where you be eyeing her”. (Wilson 1490). Bono is referring to Alberta, Troy’s neighbor. This just shows that Troy is doing something odd and especially since he fights back, “I eye all women. I don’t miss nothing. Don’t never let nobody tell you that Troy Maxson don’t eye the women”. He says this to let Bono know that he eyes all women and staring at Alberta doesn’t mean nothing. Although Bono knows that Troy is messing around with Alberta he does nothing but warn Troy to be careful. This relationship goes on for a long time, Troy would usually say, “I’m going to walk down to the Taylors’. Listen to the ball game. I’ll be back in a bit”. (Wilson 1501). We all knew where he was really going and what he was going to do. After awhile Rose gets concerned about him going out all the time but doesn’t put any mind to it as she has other things to worry about. Rose needs to keep a stable home, take care of her man, and kids. At this point Rose is trying to convince Troy to sign a contract for Cory’s football scholarship. Troy refuses to let Cory play. Troy eventually goes to the coach personally and tells him Cory could not play. Cory is distraught over this he says, “Just cause you didn’t have a chance!
