Figure of speech is a verbal expression, nonliteral use of language. Meaning that words and sounds can be arranged in a particular way using techniques. The techniques for figure of speech can include irony, alliteration hyperbole, onomatopoeia, metaphor, and simile. Figure of speech can make a poem more creative and expressive. Shall I Compare Thee to A summer’s Day pg. 589 This poem is about praising the beauty of summer. Shakespeare opens the poem by asking whether he should or will compare "thee" to a summer day. Fog on Blackboard In this simple poem, the fog comes in over a harbor and city, looking like cat feet. In the beginning, it's quiet and unsuspecting, just like a cat. Then, again like a cat, the fog moves on and it either disappears or goes over another harbor or city. The lyrics describe the rituals that Suzanna and Cohen enjoyed when they were together. Suzanne would invite Cohen to visit her place, where she would serve him tea, and they would walk around town. Stars by Janis Ian In this song, it explains how certain kind of people like to see others go down in flames, with one hand barely waving. And some people view it like if he/she is going to be a star, either exceed the phenomenon or do not.
