Shall I Compare Thee to A summer’s Day pg. 589 This poem is about praising the beauty of summer. Shakespeare opens the poem by asking whether he should or will compare "thee" to a summer day. He said that his beloved is even more lovely and tempered. He then runs off a list of reasons why summer isn’t all that great. Shakespeare concludes that as long as humans exist, the poem he is writing will live on, …show more content…
Fog on Blackboard In this simple poem, the fog comes in over a harbor and city, looking like cat feet. In the beginning, it's quiet and unsuspecting, just like a cat. Then, again like a cat, the fog moves on and it either disappears or goes over another harbor or city. Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles This song is about loneliness, as said multiple times "Ah, look at all the lonely people.” Overall, Eleanor was depressed and alone, and she hid it. Father Mckenzie was sad and lonely, and he hid it. Both of them were too distracted by their own self-pity to realize and reach out for help. Suzanne by Leonard Cohen on Blackboard This song is about how love and faith works in the same way. Love is represented by Suzanne and faith by Jesus. The lyrics describe the rituals that Suzanna and Cohen enjoyed when they were together. Suzanne would invite Cohen to visit her place, where she would serve him tea, and they would walk around town. Stars by Janis Ian In this song, it explains how certain kind of people like to see others go down in flames, with one hand barely waving. And some people view it like if he/she is going to be a star, either exceed the phenomenon or do not. Stars must rise above it, emotionally and intellectually, and if stars can’t do that, then he/she will go down. Symbol pg. 592 A symbol is used when one thing is meant to represent something else. 2009. A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Analyze a symbol in George Orwell's 1984, and write an essay demonstrating how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.
To start off, the first stanza in her song represents a sense of how unavoidable change is and how the confusion of the bond combined with the stress of the blame game can lead to a doomed
The song writer uses Hyperboles, Metaphors, Personification, and especially imagery. Within the first section, it states that “she’s buying a stairway to heaven”, this being a hyperbole, since you cannot literally buy a stairway to heaven. For the next few sections, the writer uses lines like, “In a tree by the brook, there’s a songbird who sings”, “And my spirit is crying for leaving”, and “in my thoughts I have seen the rings of smoke through the trees, and the voices of those who stand looking.” These use Imagery, and personification, to let you see what is happening within the story of the lady. More examples of personification are, “And the forests will echo with laughter”, “Our shadows taller than our soul”. Some examples of hyperboles are the lines, “Your head is humming, and it won’t go”, “All that glitters is gold”, “Our shadows taller than our soul”, and, “everything turns to gold.” The song uses an outstanding amount of literary elements.
According to Wikipedia, a symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow us to go beyond what is known or seen by creating links between concepts and experiences. They help create a better understanding of the plot, theme, or characters in literature. For example, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding consists of several symbols. The novel is about a group of British boys who are stranded on an island with nothing but their knowledge of human civilization. They try to create a society of their own, but it begins to subside as they descend into savagery. Symbols like the conch, the beast, or the painted masks help reveal their true nature. However, the most important symbol is the fire. Golding uses the fire to paradoxically represent savagery, destruction and most significantly hope of rescue. He describes the fire as technology that menaces destruction if it gets out of control, yet ironically it also symbolizes the boys’ connection to human civilization.

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” (“Sonnet 18”) is one of Shakespeare’s most famous poems. It is the model English, or Shakespearean sonnet: it contains three quatrains and a finishing couplet.. The poem follows the traditional English sonnet form by having the octet introduce an idea or set up the poem, and the sestet beginning with a volta, or turn in perspective. In the octet of Sonnet 18, Shakespeare poses the question “Shall I compare the to a summer’s day” and basically begins to describe all the bad qualities of summer. He says it’s too windy, too short, too hot, and too cloudy. Eventually fall is going to come and take away all the beauty because of the changes nature brings. In the sestet, however, his tone changes as he begins to talk about his beloved’s “eternal summer” (Shakespeare line 9). This is where the turn takes place in the poem. Unlike the summer, their beauty will never fade. Not even death can stop their beauty for, according to Shakespeare, as long as people can read this poem, his lover’s beauty will continue to live. Shakespeare believes that his art is more powerful than any season and that in it beauty can be permanent.

In literary works, a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. The image of the mule emerges repeatedly in different contexts throughout Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, but remains consistent in its symbolism of Janie. The figure of the mule can also refer not only to Janie herself but to any black woman struggling for independence.
Anti-smoking advertisements occasionally pop up throughout our society which is often showing the viewers the harmful effects of tobacco through startling images. This advertisement uses the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos in order to make people rethink about smoking. The video advertisement uses children to make a point across by showing real scenarios on the effects of smoking. It shows that the commonplace for smoking, in today’s time, is acceptable for teenagers to smoke and jump to an assumption that children are starting to try it. Once the children are introduced into this advertisement pathos is
Anything in a novel can be represented as a symbol. Symbols are a representation of an item through an abstract concept. Surprisingly, a Union Stockyard could also be a symbol; the fictional Packingtown reveals several attributes about the real life Packingtown in the course of The Jungle. Webster defined "symbol" with these words: "Something concrete that represents or suggests another thing that cannot in itself be pictured." This concept has been particularly applied to literature and used by writers throughout history. Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter uses multitudes of symbols in such a manner. One of the most prominent, and most complicated, of such symbols is the scarlet letter "A". The scarlet letter "A" is a symbol of a daughter's connection to her mother, isolation, and the devil and its associations.
