Los Angeles is the largest manufacturer in motion pictures and television, but when people think about Los Angeles, they think about Hollywood, due to the its huge power which causes people to prefer the company of fictional characters rather knowing real people.
There are many problems in Los Angeles area, and one of them is pollution since they are one of the biggest contributors to that issue due to their high traffic congestion. This is probably because there many people from different cultures and ethnicities living in Los Angeles, but every person has different living conditions. For example, in Boyle Heights there are nearly 40 different gangs and keeping Latino youth in school is a huge problem due the influence and peer pressure from the gangs (Edens). Drop out rates of school are high and therefore it becomes harder to change the city. Although, there are groups like Girls Today, Women Tomorrow, a group of women in Boyle Heights who are trying to continue with their education and help out their community …show more content…
Update:
Los Angeles is one of the biggest cities with pollution and according to the LA Times, Los Angeles has again reached the list of the cities with the strong worst smog in the nation by violating federal health standards for ozone an average of 122 days a year (Barboza). Bonnie Holmes-Gen, a senior policy director of the American Lung Assn. in California said that air pollution in Los Angeles its literally putting the health of its people in danger (Barboza).
Los Angeles has been able to reduce ozone levels by more than one-third in the last 15 years, but still is not enough because there is still ozone gas generated by pollution from vehicles, power plants, factories, etc. (Barboza). This ozone can inflame the lungs and worsen any respiratory illness and it is especially dangerous to children. I believe that the pollution generated by cars has also increase lately due to the population increase and to companies like Uber and Lyft, which are great forms of transportations, but are not helping the environment because it means that more cars are being added to the
The city of Los Angeles is not a unified city. Los Angeles consists of too many large sub cities or communities to speak with one voice. There are many sub cities in LA such as the Westside, Hollywood, the Valley, Downtown, and of course, South Central. To make things more difficult, many of these sub cities themselves are not unified. Due to their size, all
Currently the human race is coming to terms with one of the most monumental problems of its own creation : air and water pollution. The poisoning of the very air we breathe and the water that we drink has become too prolific to ignore any longer. One culprit ? Automobiles. The more smoke we expel from the exhaust pipe, the more we exhaust our environment and poison the air and water that allows us to exist. But what can we do to reduce the amount of pollution we produce ? It’s not like we can just stop driving ,right ? Wouldn’t it have an adverse effect on our productivity or make it harder to get to work ? It’s not like it would make a difference anyway, right ? Well not necessarily, currently there are entire countries banning automobiles
There are various types of air pollution contributors in California such as fire generated pollutants and vehicle traffic, which add particulate matter and carbon monoxide into the air we breathe. According to an article by Union of Concerned Scientists (Cars, trucks, and air pollution, 2014) particulate matter is made up of fine particles soot and metal that can pose serious threats to human health when deep in the lungs. Other pollutants emitted from vehicles are: nitrogen oxide which lowers the body’s defense system against respiratory infections such as pneumonia, carbon monoxide which blocks oxygen from reaching vital organs, sulfur dioxide which is emitted by both power plants and vehicles affect children and asthmatics, and hazardous air pollutants (toxics) which are chemicals that are linked to cancer, birth defects and other illnesses (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014).
Pollution has become a heated issue in recent years. The destruction of the environment along with serious health problems are the eventual effects. The extensive use and availability of automobiles, tremendous amounts of production in the booming economy and the constant increase in demand for energy, can be held responsible.
In “Los Angeles Notebook”, Joan Didion introduces Santa Ana, a dry wind that is characteristic of Los Angeles region. She emphasizes the severity of Santa Ana by depicting the influence it brings to people and the environment. The visit of Santa Ana stirred up people and causes fire, leaving people and the environment vulnerable to such weather. Didion provides details and vignettes that depicts people’s nervous and anxious reactions to underscore how significantly Santa Ana influences Los Angeles. She concludes by pointing out the fragility of human in front of the nature.
Importance of the setting: Salinas Valley is paralleled to the biblical Garden of Eden, which is necessary for .
The physical qualities of the film made the story’s tone and message come across quite clearly. The color, live action shots, background noises, historic footage, and subject interviews gave a very realistic outlook at how the south end of Los Angeles actually is. Another thing that made the film very informative was how the camera and audio was used. It contributed to the tone of seriousness, especially when they did the private interviews with a black background and just light hitting the subjects. These parts of the film make the viewer’s thoughts and ideas be biased to one side of the story. I personally think that it was making the viewer feel sorry for Lonnie and his friends. Overall, however, the film does communicates its message of the reality of those parts of Los Angeles quite well. The only weakness to the effectiveness is its biased persuasion. The best thing about this film is that you can gain more information about the event, rather than gaining little information from an article. The voices and reality of the interviews in the film gives an experience that just reading won’t give you. The film was well executed and got the point across, and if someone wanted to know more about how serial killer Lonnie David Franklin Jr.’s past and acquaintances were, this is perfect for
Everyone today contributes to pollution in some way or another. Daily routines such as driving to work or cooking release hazardous gases and numerous other toxins in the air. The same toxins released can cause harm to the lungs or even kill due to the carcinogens. Not only does the polluted air harm people but the effect to the planet is vast as well. Issues such as global warming, acid rain, and droughts are evidently linked to polluted air. Though pollution is not solely based in the air, many other forms exist as well like water, radioactive, and thermal/heat pollution. Yet the sad reality is, many people are exposed to it far more than others because of their ethnic backgrounds or for poverty based reasons. Communities with lower income
The good news was that that “the 375 cities included in the list 36 of them passed the WHO’s air quality standard of 20 micrograms of particulates per cubic meter”. The bad news is that out of the ten worst performing cities; five are located here in the central valley (Berg, "Why Does California's Central Valley Have Such Bad Air Pollution?").
Being one of the biggest social issues in Los Angeles, Air pollution has two main reasons: vehicle traffic and population growth. Actually, it is in a such crucial level that scientists indicate that air pollution in Los Angeles may endanger peoples lives. Scientific researches show that the air pollution causes cancer and have an impact on pregnant woman. Advertisements shows us some solutions like making public transportation common and sustainable housing. With the growing population of Los Angeles, something has to be done . Otherwise it is going to be impossible to deal with the air pollution. Population growth in Los
There are several periods of population growth in Los Angeles: 1855 Gold Rush, 1885 Railroad, 1891 Oil Industry, 1914 Los Angeles Ports, 1932 Winter Olympics, and more. All of these periods have common: mass media. Mass media takes an important role within city population. It delivers information, rumors, and sometimes persuade or convince people. In 1855, as soon as people heard about Gold Rush rumors, they started to head toward California with a hope of a small chance of being wealthy. The roads from the Southern California were full of people on their way to the mines with all of their vehicles and animals (Guinn 127). Some of them became rich, and the more people joined to be like them. Since many people came from various regions, their
This pollution increases health risks by introducing people to harmful toxins released by cars, specifically in the asthmatic population. Hence, one can see the problems associated with traffic congestion and pollution. There are several ways to counteract the problem of traffic congestion and pollution. Firstly, the most practical solution to New York City’s congestion problem is to decrease the number of cars on the road. One plausible way would be to promote and offer alternative methods of transportation such as buses, subways, and taxis. If people used more public transportation there would be fewer cars on the road, less congestion, and less traffic pollution. Another alternative would be to increase toll prices. By increasing tolls on bridges and tunnels, people would be much less inclined to drive to the city and as a result there would be less traffic congestion and pollution. Gridlock is a major cause of traffic problems in Manhattan. If we were to implement more severe fines for blocking intersections, people would not try to “beat the light,” in effect decreasing overall congestion. A third approach to try and resolve this issue would be to change some one-way streets to two-way streets. Doing this would allow easier access to destinations and would eliminate indirect route taking. As a result, overall pollution would decrease. These are some of the methods that would be viable in decreasing
All over the world people are noticing that the impact of car is greater than we first anticipated. The carbon emitted from the manufacturing of the mass produced vehicle industry is slowly but surely ruining our ozone. Since the beginning of the car era to now they have been one of the top things depleting our ozone, they have done most of the damage which happens to be 80% of the total destruction. So ask yourself, What’s My TireTrak? This growing problem is happening everywhere, where cars are. The scariest of this entire problem is that we can’t get the ozone that we have lost, back! So if we want to start to help out the environment, we’d better start now.
We all know the big city that everyone loves to talk about and be a part of the experience of a lifetime which is Los Angeles, also known as L.A. It is one of the most known cities in California and around the world where people’s dreams come true. L.A. is best known for its beaches, entertainment, amusements, and the people around the city. It’s also known as “The City of Angels”, which is the spanish word for “Angeles”. It is the second most populous city in the United States after New York. I’ve always known L.A. as a big part of my life, being born in the city of luxury and fame. Growing up, I never knew how much of a big deal LA was until I was in high school. Being around so much popularity and seeing the opportunities that LA has brought to people was amazing to me. From the sports games, to the concerts, to the famous celebrities walking the red carpets brung so much excitement to me and I was glad to experience all of it.
Los Angeles was the first product off the assembly line of American urban planning. Turned on in the late 19th century, the city-making machine was fueled by an immense immigration of people who sought to create a new type of city out of the previously quaint pueblo. They also strove to craft the first major city developed primarily by Americans and outside of European archetypes. As a result, Los Angles is not only incredibly diverse, but also nearly impossible to define. Since it is a product of the American machine, understanding the community of Los Angeles becomes vital to understanding the United States. But to fully comprehend the present Los Angeles, one must look at the process that created it. Specifically, Los Angeles was
