Film Analysis : La Cabeza Mato A Todos ( The Head Killed Everyone )

For my cultural activity, I watched a Spanish-language movie with English subtitles in order to better understand the film. The purpose of this paper is to express my reactions concerning the Puerto Rican film Casi Casi. In summary, Casi Casi is a high school romantic comedy about a boy who runs for Student Council President who is attracted to a girl who also decides to run against him. At the beginning of the film, my initial reaction was that the film was going to be very difficult to view and interpret due to the fact that it was produced in a foreign language that I am not fluent in.

The film Pelo Malo takes place in the city of Caracas, Venezuela and is about a young boy and obsession with straightening his hair. In the movie, the main characters Junior his single mother Marta and baby brother live with in an apartment complex with in the city of Caracas. This movie takes place in 2011, during the time that Hugo Chavez came down with cancer. The film’s primary themes were homophobia, and racism. The movie detailed a young boys struggle for acceptance and love from his mother and his struggle to obtain his desire of straight hair. Throughout the movie, the young child is seen living in an apartment complex that is located within a lower socioeconomic status area. When Marta, was not able to find a baby sitter to watch over her children when she worked she was forced to take the children with her on the bus through the city to her work. One of the places that she was shown to work was in a gated residence where she worked as a security guard for the area. The primary conflict in the movie revolved around the mothers fear that her son was “gay” due to his obsession with straightening his hair and his singing. Due to many of the things that the young boy does in the movie, the mother Marta fears that her child is homosexual and during one particular scene is worried that she was the cause of it. The 1946 film The Killers is a renowned film noir based off of Ernest Hemingway’s short story of the same title, focusing on the detailed backstory and investigation for the motive of the murder of Pete Lund/Ole Anderson, commonly known and referred to as “The Swede.” A film noir is a term made originally to describe American mystery and thriller movies produced in the time period from 1944-1954, primarily marked by moods of menace, pessimism, and fatalism. Although the film does not focus on the war itself at all, it still puts forth interesting new ways in how gender relations can be stereotypical as well as divergent proceeding the Second World War.

Tombstone was released December 25, 1993 and made $6,454,752 in the first week. Tombstone is based in the city of Tombstone in the Arizona Territory during the 1880s. The movie is about the conflict that an ex-cattle town sheriff and his family face. Wyatt Earp, played by Kurt Russell, his older Brother Virgil Earp, (Sam Elliott), and his younger brother Morgan Earp, (Bill Paxton), come to Tombstone to become miners. When they first get off the wagon at the hotel, the county sheriff greets them and gives them a tour and they come to a saloon put out the business by Ike Clanton, (Stephen Lang). Wyatt throws Clanton out of the saloon. Milt Joyce, (Pat Brady) cuts Wyatt in on 25% of the houses takings a night. After this walking back to his brother Ike shows up with a shotgun to deal with Wyatt; at this time, we are introduced to Doc. Holiday, (Val Kilmer) who hollers at Ike so to alert the Earps of what is coming. Due to this no blood was shed. Then a stagecoach rolls into town. On the coach is a play company staring Josephine Marcus, (Dana Delany). Wyatt is immediately attracted to her and she notices him down the road and is attracted as well. Then the Earps and Doc go to the Bird Cage Theater where they take their wives: Wyatt’s wife Mattie, (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson), Virgil’s wife Allie, (Paula Malcomson) and Morgan’s wife Louisa, (Lisa Collins) and Doc’s girl Kate, (Joanna Pacula). The film La Bamba showcases one of the most important historical moments in not only music history but also Latino music history. The star Lou Diamond, portrays Ritchie Valens originally Valenzuela. Ritchie was a boy who did not grow up in a normal childhood. In the film Valens played by Lou diamond is shown working hard alongside his mother Connie trying to make an honest living. His older brother Bob finds his way to his mother and young brother convincing them both to leave the fruit fields where they were working. While Ritchie should have been at school he was working. Once they moved to Los Angeles, Ritchie started attending high school like a normal teen should. His love for music grew strong as he became fond of a young girl named Donna. Donna was from a middle class white family, while Ritchie was from a poor Latino American family. Donna’s parents wanted to keep the two apart from each other as her father did not approve of the romance because Ritchie had nothing to offer his daughter. Ritchie had nothing to offer Donna but his music and hope of someday making a name for himself. One-day Ritchie and his band mates are having a show and a man by the name of Bob Keane stops by to see the performance, while there Keane shows a great interest in Ritchie and reaches out to him. Keane soon convinces Valens that he didn’t need his band mates, that Ritchie was all the talent. Bob Keane not only manages to get Ritchie to drop his band, but he also convinces him to change

In the film ‘’Maquilapolis’’ it tells the story of the human cost of globalization; focusing on group of female factory workers in Tijuana, which is home to hundreds of factories. Over the course of several years, a group of factory workers were a part of the documentary to tell their stories. The workers faced issues that included human rights abuses, danger from toxic chemicals both in the factory and in the environments all around the factories. A group of ‘’maquiladoras’’ became community advocates, and actively pushed to improve their situation and attempt to make a change and let their voices be heard. Large corporations play a key role in widening this gap. These corporations/companies move there productions to places like Tijuana to and other foreign places to for tax breaks and for cheap labor. They also use their connections to ensure government policy works for them. There is a huge gap between the super-rich and the rest of the world population that traps millions in poverty, fracturing our societies and undermining our democracy. It leaves more people living in fear and fewer in hope. Migration is a complex process and has been a feature of human societies for many centuries. There are many reasons why people choose to migrate. Migration means merely the movement of humans from one place to another with the purpose to find better opportunities. Serpico” is a film that based on the of New York City Police Officer named Frank Serpico and the difficult obstacles he had to face working for the NYPD. Serpico is a “cops cop” that had to deal with persuasive organized corruption, police crime, and ethical dilemmas etc. All these obstacles were hard for Serpico to work with on a daily basis. He refused to take bribes and his co-workers begin distrust him. Serpico informed his superiors about the corruption but they did nothing about it. The superior’s just transferred him from the Bronx. Brooklyn, and Harlem. The higher ups in the police department were more concerned if Serpico spoke to any outside private organizations about the police misconduct.

The exhibit is located at Texas State University, San Marcos and I visited on December 1st. The titles of the work I chose was The Photographer, Getting Even, Carousel Bartender, Chandelier and Alex’s Music Room. The year this work was published was in 2003. The art shown is photographs in black and white and is hand tinted with color oils. The subject of this art is to showcase events in everyday life. By expressing it emotional and creativity by capturing the things many people wouldn't think that are a realty Paint of the artwork is really has a lot of going on outside of the main attraction. In Alex’s music’s room the first thing that captures your eyes is all the red in the painting and the violins, harper and the cymbal on the floor. When you look closer into the painting you can see crazy details. Like the lions laying around in the music room and the candles in the pieced looks as if it's a person not really a candle. The decoration on the chandelier looks like there is really gems hanging in the art. In the art piece Getting Even its isn’t as detailed but it makes you wonder how did Schenck catch this moment on his camera. The painting its taking place in some field of flowers. It’s late at night and it looks like a man is about to kill another person but the other human being is just standing there. I guess the person is getting even by homicide since that’s the name of the painting. The painting doesn’t really focus on the people in it. It focusses more on the scenery because its more emphasized in the painting. The people are more a shadow and in the background I would say. My favorite painting out of the five would have to the be the Carousel Bartender you can see it in my expression. When I was looking at the art this was the first painting that caught my attention. There cannot be a discussion about borders without also discussing the metaphors that are linked to them. When speaking about the border people know the physical borderlines between countries, but to understand borders one must look pass the physical boundaries. As a society we must be and make ourselves more aware of the cultural identity, language, and community surrounding the Latino American population.

The two works of art that I have chosen to analyze are 1) Jordan Casteel. Miles and JoJo. 2014. Oil on canvas, 54” x 72” and 2) Aaron Fowler. He Was. 2015. Mixed media, 134” x 165” x 108”. The themes that these works of art represent in regards to the exhibit are love, family, and pain. However, they also fall into other thematic categories. The main theme that seems to apply to both “Miles and JoJo” and “He Was” is Human Experience. Additionally, these arts differ in some ways.

Although Mar Caribe had a lot of emotional impact on me, my favorite part of exhibition was Congregation by Ledelle Moe. Even I was not big fan of it at first sight, I found it extremely interesting so I decided to take some time and figure out more about it. The ideas of what a utopian society should look like changes when talking to different people in different parts of the world. More often than not most people would say that violence is not a part of this utopian ideal and that man has found a way to work past that and find a better solution to the violent issues we have seen in the past. Films in a sense are a way for artists to explore these utopian and dystopia ideals and present them to the public as a looking glass into what the world could look like. For many of us we live in a capitalistic society or a society with at least some forms of capitalistic ruling. Film makers in Latin America have used their position to critique and analyze the different forms of capitalism and how the
