The comedy genre is not one I am particularly well-versed in. I enjoy comedy, but for whatever reason I do not laugh as much as many people during funny movies. More often than not, I smile and chuckle while others hold their stomachs in pain from their abundant laughter. So it must be a very amusing movie indeed (or at least one that appeals to my particular tastes) to make me genuinely laugh. The Other Guys accomplishes this feat.
Set in New York City, this film follows detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). Gamble has recently been transferred from forensic accounting and has no interest in pursuing the usual police work seen in movies. Hoitz, on the other hand, loves being a “real cop” and wants to chase

Their writing is excellent for its comedic value alone. The Other Guys provides laughs throughout, sometimes with hilarious one-time jokes (lion vs. tuna), but it also mixes in a number of funny through-jokes that pop up numerous times throughout the film (peacock, TLC references, Hoitz’ obsession with drug cartels, hot women’s obsession with Gamble, etc.) Not only are these amusing, but they also enhance the chemistry and feeling of friendship between Wahlberg and Ferrell as they are reminiscent of inside jokes amongst …show more content…
He provides some surprisingly interesting visuals not often found in comedies. He moves the camera just enough to keep it interesting and fresh. He also uses some interesting camera angles (most notably a shot looking down at Keaton from a bullet hole in the ceiling) that keep the film looking alive. Lastly, he also parodies other filmmakers to entertaining effect. For example, he uses slow-motion a couple times that reminded me of The Matrix. He also uses jazz music to remind viewers of the Lethal Weapon series and utilizes a dramatic narrator like countless other movies. On the whole, McKay provides some above average directing, especially for this type of
The first criteria for this review is humor which is defined as, “The quality that makes something laughable, amusing or funniness” (“Humor,” 2017, para. 1). The second criteria is acting, which is defined as “the practice of representing a character before cameras” (“Acting n.d., para. 1.). Lastly, the third piece of criteria for this review is the profound message and profound is defined as, “extending under the surface” (“Profound” n.d., para. 1). The audience for this review is somebody who has not seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite, someone who has a different opinion on the movie or
How many 40-year-old unemployed slackers do you know? Now imagine 2 of them under the same roof obnoxiously fighting about childish things. Step Brothers from start to finish is exactly this displaying 2 outrageously comical actors in Will Ferrell and John C Reilly bickering back and forth trying to learn how to cope with one another. The glory of this film comes from the constant one liners that make no sense but fit the film perfectly, the childish behavior, and the elementary school comebacks mixed in with the adult language which adds a different but great comical sense that few movies have been able to portray before. Such as when Ferrell refers to Reilly as a “Big, fat, curly-headed f***”. This line had me rolling on the floor due to the seriousness of Ferrell and the reaction of Reilly and the fact that it is a simple 3rd grade insult with an F-bomb thrown in there that just makes it all that more funny. Although Talladega Nights and the Anchorman trilogy had better storylines none compare to the pure comedy that Step Brothers provides. Step Brothers is Will Ferrell’s most entertaining movie made to date, and is one that can be watched over and over without losing its humor.
A League of Their Own (Marshall, 1992) explicitly characterizes an American era when a woman’s place was in the home. Even our modern perspective implicitly follows suit. Although women have gained rights and freedoms since the 1930’s, sexism remains prevalent in America. This film offers an illustration when men went to war and big business men utilized women as temporary replacements in factories, sports, and so on. Here, course concepts, such as gender socialization, gender expressions, role stereotypes, emotion expressions, and language, correspond to the film’s characters and themes.
Sandler began releasing audio tapes of his comedy routines and they were very successful. His first, They're all gonna laugh at you! earned a Grammy nomination and spent over 100 weeks on Billboard charts. Although dismissed by many as tasteless, they were a huge success.
Don't we all have something in common? Well that's just how comedians have an effect to communicate a universal truth with their audience. Whether if its confusion, sickness, frustration we all have something that we can relate to and that is how comedians use this effect because we can relate to that feeling or subject. That's how a comedian can communicate a universal truth to us by using humor.
The movie tells the story of two hit men, a mob boss and his wife, and an aging boxer. The stories of these people are put together to create a bizarre yet funny movie.
In several scenes of the film, a few of the main characters often rely on humor to alleviate or diffuse
In the article “Will the Real Chris Rock Please Stand Up Sam Lansky quotes Chris Rock who said “Normally have a separate stash of jokes just for stand ups. I didn't separate them this time. I put them into play!”In reference to the film that he was working on at the time which was Top 5(Lansky 1).Also, Lansky quotes Chris Rock When he said “Am I going to be able to express myself properly in this medium.” Because Rock was worried that having to work with other people would not let him be able to let the creativity and that he displayed and his stand-up shine.Rock the end up including the comedy that he would use in a stand up which led the film to become more realistic creating a greater emotional attachment to his character, Andre Allen
He makes you care for his character and believe his motivations and feelings for the first portion of the movie. He struggles a bit in the emotional scenes, but he still succeeds in evoking our sympathy. By the end of the film, his performance takes a remarkable turn and he becomes genuinely disturbing. It’s brilliant.
There are several aspects of a film that will make a good comedy. A good comedy needs well-rounded characters, adventure, and a love story. If a film has well-rounded characters the viewer can relate to them in some way. If a film has adventure there is never a dull moment that will lull the viewer to sleep, and it’s packed full of crazy obstacles the characters have to pull through. If there is a love story of some kind, serious or funny, it will keep the viewer interested throughout the entire film, and keep the viewer wondering what is going to happen in the end. When a comedy has these things it will surely be a good comedic film.
But what makes it unique is how the director shoots it. If Mel brooks doesn’t give them right instructions and only gives them scripts, the movie wouldn’t have that ‘real life’ feel, but instead would feel forced and dull. Mel brooks made sure that they had the best instructions he could possibly give them. So voila! It came out like it
What humor. It’s just too funny to not laugh at, unless you don’t have a dark mind then this is just offensive. The dialogue or the language structure can make people look the other way because it can be childish:
No matter what, when Will Ferrell is around you can be sure that there will be some off- the- wall silly pranks being played, or some crazy antics on or off the film sets; with the other cast or crew members being one of Will Ferrell’s targets. Will Ferrell have also been acknowledged as one of the most liked, and favourable televisions late night show's guest known for his sense of humour, creative skit moments, or something that is improved to catch the host off guard. With the success that Will Ferrell has had over the years, he is still recognized and rewarded for by the film critics for his characters he portrays. Will Ferrell's amazing acting ability in films, or with his voice overs make Will Ferrell one of the most famous, successful, and funniest actors to this day.
Meanwhile, both movies oozing their own exceptional ingenuity of witty humor. The remarkable ignorant/shallow attitude delivered by the sarcastically deadpanned actors were likable and
Gender roles in comedy are significant in how women and men perceive one another. How a male and female allow others to talk to them is a mutual agreement between dominance and control. According to Deborah Tannen, in But What Do You Mean, “Unfortunately, women and men often have different ideas about what is appropriate, different ways of speaking.” Meaning, when women and men allow another to talk to them about topics that are not usually taken lightly there is a thin line between being truthful and telling a joke. The main subject of the joke and what is actually, “funny” can be mocking or derogatory. The sense of humor in a male and female can be on two different spectrums. Usually, female humor is self-lowering can be seen as
