Film Club and PCNN are two critical clubs wherein students create works of art to portray to their classmates. Although, there is one sizeable issue regarding funding for these two societies, which is creating tension between them. This issue regards the fundamental change in which Pine Crest Film students desire: to alter the amount of financing going to both PCNN and Film Club, since both teams will be able to use their equipment, less tension would arouse between the two organizations, and resources will be evenly spread around in one ecosystem as well. Ari Segal, a student of Film Club, offered his opinion on the current situation, “I think the current amount of gear PCNN has is shocking compared to film’s number of equipment. The advisors of the student body of PCNN would be against a change in finance because both clubs rely entirely on funding, so if one association of students receives less money, there may be an outrage. Although, as reported by Pine Crest School, PCNN and Film Club are officially recognized as joint-associations, meaning Film Club or PCNN Film, should be allowed to have entirely stable funding, similar to PCNN. The provision for these clubs is an issue specifically in the classrooms of these two organizations, in which one class holds many more resources than another. This change towards funding can be made over the summer of the school year to have time to discuss the distribution of financing, and the alteration should be done to benefit Film Club more than ever before. It will also allow Film Club to support themselves with equipment instead of having to borrow equipment from PCNN. Ultimately, Film Club and PCNN should receive equal financing because both teams will be able to use their gear, less tension would arouse between the two organizations, and resources will be evenly spread around evenly in one ecosystem as
Although cinema is now a priority, some feel as if cinema is no longer the cinema when it was first established. Movies no longer have that special feeling like viewers once had. Today, films are not only shared within a theater, if one pleases they could always have the same experience elsewhere. Moreover, with technology expanding, it takes away the importance cinema once had. “The
The Film School Generation was referred to the young filmmakers that took over. This young bunch was also called the blockbuster maker because of their new technology and their continuing evolution as idiosyncratic filmmakers with commercial clout.
According to (Bates 665), “Cinematic society refers to the 20th century societal formation that recognizes itself via cinematic apparatus,” he points to the chief place that films hold in
As standard in college classes, we have occasional papers and quizzes to test and solidify our understanding. However, the reality is that all the filmmaking knowledge in the world is useless without some way to put it to use.
Movies today are filmed through cell phones and make it to the big screen and others are all done digitally through computers. Although the resources are easily within our reach, the labor and quality is present through the few consistent things that are accomplished rather than a many inconsistent. John Nelsons agrees by saying, “Less is more, rather than throwing a million things at the viewer, why not just a hundred really good things” (qtd. In Marshall).
Quebec has had a long association with the idea of independence from the rest of Canada. The province has had two referendums to vote on whether it should separate from Canada or not. However, this want for independence is not just shown in the political sphere, but as well in its culture, and especially its film industry. Because of this independence, the Quebec film industry should be viewed as a separate entity from Canadian film, and not as a regional cinema of Canada. Quebec cinema is a national cinema because of the protection of the French-Canadian language and culture, along with its refusal of the outside, and its specific use of the direct cinema. These traits can be seen in the canonical films Mon
The Cinema has became one of America’s favorite past times. The artistry and the technology has captured American audiences, giving films influence over our culture. The film industry can easily change people’s opinions, without much work Hollywood can make us hate the villains and love the heroes. Through this we see the power that the cinema industry has grown to have, and the influence it has in our society. However it is also our society who possess even greater influence over the film industry.
Select two or more films from this course and compare and/or contrast them, using one or more of the above criteria (shared themes, etc.). SUPERFLY and DUTCHMAN
This journal concludes that “While film can be considered an artistic expression, albeit a commercial one, it also crosses into the public consciousness through the influence of its images”. When he concludes the author also points out that film as a medium should be used to inform teachers, students, and parents about individual abilities and social
Artist, textile designer, poet and novelist, William Morris, whose literary works helped to develop the genre of fantasy, once stated: “I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few.” In other words, art cannot exist in a vacuum. It is imperative to the success of an artist to be able to express and share their work with others. What is the purpose of creating a motion picture if not to present it in front of as many eyes and brains as possible? Despite film students learning both the theory and practical methods of creating narrative films in the ASU curriculum, the biggest screen most students can ever hope to see their work on is a Mac screen. This is a nail in the coffin regarding future careers, because students never learn how to create with the intent of presenting their product on the big screen. A minor error on a computer screen may increase ten-fold when stretched to forty feet of 16:9 glory. Professional writer/director David Lynch (best known for Elephant Man (1980)) once commented that people who watch films on small screens “will never in a trillion years experience the film...you'll be cheated” (Douglas). ASU’s film curriculum is cheating students out of experiencing their work in a way
Our team has chosen to write “how to” instructions on Prezi for the Filmmakers Anonymous Organization. Prezi can be an effective tool for members of the Filmmakers Anonymous Organization to present their own films to others both in and outside of the organization. Members of the organization will want to know how to use Prezi features to allow them to highlight and discuss some areas of the film so that their audience will be interested in seeing it. Some of these areas may include, the plot of the film, specific filming techniques, type of camera used, and casting choices if presentation is being shown to other members. A trailer or film synopsis can be shown to potential viewers outside of the organization. A key feature
At UChicago, I know I will be able to satisfy my hunger for films and the stories they tell through the incredible cinema and media studies faculty and program. I am drawn to the focus on film at all levels: From the avant-garde to the commercial. I am also especially intrigued by the incredible faculty in this program, and specifically with Yuri Tsivian’s focus on cinemetrics. Film editing has always been of special interest for me because of the unique ability it owns to manipulate time, tone, story and structure. I
The film industry has continuously changed since its inception due to rapid technology advancements. Camera technology has been a key factor that has influenced the growth of filmmaking. The first motion picture in the world was produced in the early 1880s, and the first public screening occurred ten years later. It didn’t take long for the quality of films to improve as new filmmaking equipment emerged. Ever since the first movie was produced, the film industry has been continuously changing in response to emerging filmmaking technology. Introduction of digital photography and digital data storage along with the development of internet significantly influenced the film industry (Barsam, 2015). These technologies contributed
Film Industry has been expansively affected by the changes in technology. Although these crews meant for temporary work only, their skills are most needed during the production stage of film shooting. The crews’ employment rise as the production begins. On the pre-production and post production stage, only several crews’ needed depending on their skills. At the end of making the film the organisation formed for this purposes ceases to exist, leaving no fixed assets and no structure for continued learning.
