After watching the video one of the clear problems for the criminal justice system is helping police officers recognize the red flags that comes with human trafficking. In addition to that problem we also need our criminal justice system to implement laws that are swift, harsh and certain. One of the main factors the film touched on is to prevent human trafficking, protect the victims, and prosecute the offenders. I believe in order to do this effectively we have to police the world and not just the United States. Due to a high volume of trafficking victims being immigrants we need to implement international laws that other countries are willing to obey. However, this would require other countries to give helping hand in order to be done successfully.
“Innocent until proven guilty.” The entire basis of the criminal justice system is to prosecute those who commit crimes and to validate every piece of evidence before prosecuting a suspect. It can be difficult for law enforcement to be precise and procedural in their quest for arresting and convicting a criminal as public outrage and pressure can affect the process of arrest and conviction. However, in other instances, the errors of law enforcement officials are not always due to outside forces or natural human errors. Bias and corruption can affect the outcome of an investigation, case, trial, verdict, and life, of a possible guilty or innocent person. In short, the criminal justice/legal system is not a perfect system, and those that serve both systems are imperfect as well. In the case of Sean K. Ellis, who was 19 years old at the time, was arrested for the murder of a Boston police officer. However, even though Ellis was arrested, tried, and convicted for this crime, he did not commit said crime. The circumstances leading to his conviction were riddled with inconsistencies and the actions taken by the police were ethically questionable as well. Police corruption, racial bias, witness credibility, and the tampering/tainting of evidence, have led to an unfair trial of an innocent man; as a result, Ellis was freed and he will receive a new trial in the coming months.
The criminal justice system is composed of three parts – Police, Courts and Corrections – and all three work together to protect an individual’s rights and the rights of society to live without fear of being a victim of crime. According to merriam-webster.com, crime is defined as “an act that is forbidden or omission of a duty that is commanded by public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that law.” When all the three parts work together, it makes the criminal justice system function like a well tuned machine.
Governments or leaders do not issue human rights. These rights are ingrained in the majority of cultures throughout the world. For instance, the majority of humans believe that killing is wrong and that human life matters, the right to life. Legal rights protect people that stand in contact or under the supervision of the criminal justice system. Having an attorney present during a trial or being treated in a humane manner act as legal rights. Moral rights relate closely in context to human rights. These remain as rights an individual possesses as a result of being human. These three genres of rights hold prevalent in the everyday function of the criminal justice system. They often overlap each other, creating ethical debate. Gay marriage was
The United States criminal justice system is essential to the functioning of American society. A central component to the criminal justice system in our country is the U.S. courts. The U.S. courts uphold those rights guaranteed to U.S. citizens under the Constitution while also enforcing the laws and precedents set forth by the United States government. Over the course of the last several months I have been given the opportunity to sit in and observe the workings and proceedings that take place in The Dutchess County Courthouse. The Judge whose courtroom I observed in over the course my internship was Justice Stephen Greller. Justice Greller was elected to the bench in 1985 and is currently serving his 30th year as a Judge. Needless
Prior to the over a thousand days spent on Rikers Island, including brutal nights in solitary confinement, Kalief Browder could remember his walk down East 186th Street that was suddenly interrupted by the NYPD who accused him of robbing the person who sat in their cop car, a person who Kalief claimed to have never seen in his life. Unable to make bail, Kalief suddenly found himself on his way to Rikers Island. In 2010, he soon became one of the 5,695 victims of the Bronx criminal court system even though the only evidence that was had was the memory of the alleged victim (Gonnermen 1). As discussed in class, the Criminal Justice System can be looked at as a contract within itself that contains two parts of its social contract, part one as crimes with the punishments to those crimes and part two as the due process to how the legal system handles the suspect of a crime. Even though the Criminal Justice System has been studied and training has been implemented to government officials on how to follow it properly, up to present day the Criminal Justice’s contract with society still causes trauma within society.
The criminal justice system is a set of agencies and process that have been established to control crime and impose punishment on those who violate them. They aide in apprehending, prosecuting, defending, sentencing, and punishing individuals who have been convicted of a crim. There is no one criminal justice system in the United States but many individual systems. The way they work depends on the jurisdiction in which they exist. The laws are different in different types of jurisdiction. The different types of jurisdictions are state, county, state, federal and tribal government, and military installations. The main systems are state and federal. State systems handle offenses that occur within state boundaries and federal systems handle offense that occur in more than one state or on federal property (land owned by the federal government). Most criminal justice systems consist of 5 components. These components include law enforcement, prosecution, defense attorneys, courts, and corrections. Each play a major role in the criminal justice system. Understanding the criminal justice system is essential in ensuring that you know and understand your rights. This paper will discuss the history, each of the components, problems within the system (corruption), and its overall function.
James Maclaine was a peculiar criminal; he was adored and feared by many throughout London. The media depicted him as a handsome gentleman, who stole for survival, although there are several contrasting historical documents that challenge this belief. Horace Walpole wrote in a letter in on October 18th, 1750 following “his condemnation, three thousand people went to see him; he fainted away twice with the heat of his cell. You can’t conceive the ridiculous rage there is of going to Newgate; and the prints that are published of the malefactors, and the memoirs of their lives and death set forth with as much parade as-as-Marshal Turenne’s-we have no general worth making a parallel.”
Week five I learned a lot about the criminal justice system and the women who end up in prison. Additionally, people who commit white collared crimes are less likely to be incarcerated. In addition, three women's stories gave me glimpse of why women resort to selling drugs and how the end up criminals. Chapter nine also brought to light the sexual assault and neglect of Medicare women face in prison Watching week five films gave insight and visual on how prison can make a prison regress or become worse than when they went in. Connie Hanes Film demonstrated how innocent people could end up in prison for the rest of their life by not having an attorney properly represent them. Her film also explained why women do not tell about the sexually assault

Growing up in an upper-middle-class and relatively conservative family in China, I have yet to have the chance to personally meet or talk to anyone who has been or currently is incarcerated. Also, I had no prior experiences of discussing criminal behaviors with someone that is involved in the criminal justice system. This was my first time interviewing a police officer, and it was through this interview that I fully understood and experienced the complexity of crime. While China has a completely different political ideology that leads to a different criminal justice system from the United States, similar theories of criminology still apply to the explanation of criminal behaviors. Moreover, crime is a complicated matter that can be associated with social, cultural and political events. In the interview, Officer Z offered his opinions on criminal behaviors and what motivates people to commit the crime, which could lead to incarceration, torture and even death penalty. As a police officer of the same city for over two decades, he concluded that crimes, including theft, rape and assault, were often drug related. Besides his views on criminal behaviors, Officer Z also revealed the corruption in China and how these corruptions affected the system in catching criminals. This article focuses on my interaction with Officer Z and applications of the theories on criminal behaviors that he described to me.
Throughout the different platforms of media, existential and non existentialism can present itself into the creation and compositions. In non existential media, there seems to always be a good and bad, and the consequences of their actions follow this objective. As for existential media, the characters shape their own choices and actions, and their justification of whether an action is good or bad is soley up to them.In Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors, the movie presents an existential world. Throughout the movie the characters make their own decisions without relying on the consequences or the social pressures of others. From Professor Levy’s suicide to Halley’s choice of picking Lester over Clifford, every character picks their own
In Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors the character professor Louis Levy states that "We are all faced throughout our lives with agonizing decisions, moral choices” (Crimes). He points out that some of these decisions and moral choices are on a large scale, while others are on a smaller scale, or as the title might suggest there are crimes, and there are misdemeanors. Dr. Levy continues, “But we define ourselves by the choices we make. We are in fact the sum total of our choices” (Crimes). The theme of choices and morality are seen throughout the film. The characters are faced with moral dilemmas and life choices both large and small. The decisions they make as they deal with their dilemmas effects them and those around them.
“Lives for Sale: Human Trafficking” video makes me think about many things, since human trafficking has been a severe problem worldwide nowadays. Human trafficking is not the only issue in United State but also around the world.
Justice is the government’s way of holding individuals accountable for infringing upon the inalienable rights of another human being. Government must act within the authority prescribed to it by God. God’s law is the source of man-made laws. Government have the obligation to enforce these consequences. (Fischer, 2016, slide 7). The offender must answerer to taking Life, Liberty, and Property from an innocent person. When these rights are taken away by man, justice must be rendered. Crimes such as murder, hate crimes, rape, and terrorism claim the life of many innocent victims. The Bible states, “It is not good to be partial to the wicked and so deprive the innocent of justice” (Proverbs 18:5). The family member of the offender will
