Just 26,130 hours left. To many college students in my shoes, this number represents the hours they must put forth until they receive their diplomas. However, for me, this number has more significance: it represents the fleeting moments I have to academically and socially enrich myself in order to empower my community. While 26,130 hours might seem like an enormous amount of time, with the time spent on studying, sleeping, and maintaining good hygiene, this amount of time is decimated. With the remaining time, I have a choice of sustaining myself financially by working as a tutor or focusing on my interests through extracurricular activities. In most situations, I am obliged to pick the former as opposed to the latter. Although I gain money
As a new student coming into this class we might have wondered what interpersonal communication was. However, I believe by now we all have a better understanding of what it means to communicate amongst ourselves. We all, or at least most of us were strangers at the start of class. However, through exercises and discussions we have become open with each other and learned a little along the way. Something as simple as our shared interests such as superhero movies or Star Wars trivia has opened up discussions we might not have had otherwise as a group. Our perceptions of each other have changed since that first awkward day playing a cheesy board game (Alder, Rosenfeld, Proctor II, 2013, p. 106-139). As we practiced our communication skills many of us have developed a stronger self-concept as well as boosted our self-esteems (Alder, Rosenfeld, Proctor II, 2013, p. 66-67). We also used social comparisons in our class intended or not (Alder, Rosenfeld, Proctor II, 2013, p. 69). We compared our backgrounds, both cultural, ethnic, as well as socio economic standing. Some of these comparisons come from what we learned as children to believe, while others are from what we have learned in life. This is what has intrigued me the most in class. The facts that we as a “civilized” world still have not come that far at all. Women are still for the most part second-class citizens, hate is taught to our children, and language still hasn’t evolved to where there are no
The irritating, influential, and overwhelming documentary was directed by Ava DuVernay (Samito, 2015). While the documentary shakes the audience, it challenges their concepts regarding race intersection, mass incarceration in the U.S. and justice. It is a subject matter that sounds less cinematic. It has been increasingly difficult to separate Ava DuVernay filmmaking from her activism (Gray, Palmiotti, Archer & Guzman, 2007). The 13th is a timely movie just as Black Lives Matter protest and the presidential election that was imminent.
An important aspect of public speaking is appearing confident. Through my use of hand gestures and eye contact, I feel I got sense of confidence across to the audience. By using appropriate gestures that corresponded to the topic or sentence I was addressing, it made the speech feel more active and less stagnant. In combination, by using eye contact and switching being the different people in the audience, this was able to make everyone feel like I as truly addressing them. As a result, the speech came across as a little more interesting and a little more engaging for the everyone in the class.
Group work and facilitation are foundational to the profession of social work and require a considerable amount of skill and awareness on behalf of the facilitator. Committed to interdisciplinary collaboration, social workers have become emerging leaders in interprofessional healthcare teams (Jones & Phillips, 2016). “Interprofessional collaboration happens when practitioners, patients, clients, families, and communities develop and sustain interprofessional working relationships that facilitate optimal health outcomes” (CIHC, 2010). With this definition in mind, I was excited to share my previous experience within a clinical interprofessional team as well as collaborate with my group members to gauge their understanding and brainstorm ideas. Meeting multiple times over the semester, our group finalized the details of our fictional task group early on and an overview of this information is provided in the appendices. The first half of this paper will outline a critical commentary of the second team meeting, examining my role and behaviour as a co-facilitator, while the second half of the paper will discuss my experience within the development/implementation of our fictional task group.
My plan to do well this semester is to work as hard as I can while also being able to have time for myself. Though this statement may seem to contradict in nature to a college success plan, I believe that it can actually be a very efficient plan. My methods to achieve this goal are through time management, organization, and taking care of self. It is better to break down the task by studying, reviewing, reading or completing assignments on campus while waiting during the long intervals between classes or waiting for a ride. This makes use of the time that would have otherwise be used up lounging around and free's up time, off campus.
Trusting the process has been a slogan used throughout our Social Work program, but no one has ever explained what exactly that process would be, or how it would effect us going forward. Wanting to get into St. Thomas’ Social Work program was the goal I had in mind when I began my academic journey five years ago. I left my full-time position at Coverdale’s shelter for women, and entered into a world that was a lot different then the one in which Ihad been working and living. Last year, at this time, I found out I was accepted to the program. I remember feeling like I finally accomplished a large life goal that I had set out to accomplish.
Originally, my first attempt at this class did not work out the way that I had hoped. I underestimated the amount of time I would need to devote to my lessons. Therefore, I am choosing my first attempt at this class as my event that will influence my academic work and goals at Colorado Christian University. I know now that even though having every minute of the day scheduled doesn't always mean that the schedule can be followed. I have learned that my priorities needed to be rearranged and most importantly that it is okay to ask for help.
The course did not offer any beneficial qualities; it was a complete waste of time and a complete waste of tuition fees. The exorbitant cost of tuition, better instructional courses are necessary tools to prepare us for our endeavors. With this in mind, please allow me to give an example of what type of non-beneficial setting we endured. A syllabus was provided on day one; however, non of the prescribed material was ever reviewed. For the majority of the time, the class viewed power point footage of a self-absorbed instructor constantly advertising his home area. On at least four occasions, we viewed Mr. Ollis' anti-graffiti power point of Coatsville; this experience proved excruciating. I know more about the instructor and his adventures in Coatsville than reinforcement information of the
Back when I was a senior is high school touring Oregon as my potential future college, one thing that really stood out to me was the rec. I thought it was so nice and well equipped, I would probably never be a member at a gym that nice again. Although I knew myself all too well and knew that I wasn't going to utilize it if nobody made me go. I thought signing up for one of the PE classes would force me to work out and take advantage of the amazing gym we have. I chose pilates yoga fusion in particular because I have never loved doing cardio and I thought this class would be the perfect balance between exercise and relaxation.
As I was reviewing my first essay in this course, I have found different strengths and weaknesses as well as strategies and tips that I possess while writing. Some of my strengths include sentence structure and grammar. My sentence structure had no errors according to the grammarly.com PDF attachment that my professor attached to the feedback portion of my essay. In regards to my grammar, I had one error in this portion. Even though I had one error, I still feel that grammar is one of my strong points. Now that I have identified my strengths, I will tell you about my weaknesses in writing the last essay.
After visiting Washtenaw International Middle Academy in Ypsilanti, I was able to understand from the teacher’s perspective the goals they had for their students. At first I thought it was mostly focused on learning about diversity and become more socially-minded citizens. But after visiting the students, I learned that their teachers had multiple goals for the students. From vocabulary to sentence structure to content of the message – I had totally underestimated how much students have progressed through the semester. Take John for an example (refer to exhibit 1 below). One of his earlier posts back in October indicated that his strength is being able to connect major concepts in Nadia’s post to his own experiences.
This past year, I also learned a lot about leading and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Fall semester proved very difficult for me; with a daily schedule packed full from sunrise to sunset, and hours upon hours of homework in the evening, I struggled to find a consistent sleep schedule or eating schedule. However, after the Moreau material covering sleeping patterns, I decided to incorporate naps into my daily routine, and as a result, I felt significantly more energized and happier, even, the remainder of the fall semester. This semester, I have improved significantly by exercising regularly, getting at least seven hours of sleep per night, and eating two full meal a day. Compared to first semester, I have also done far better with handling stress. One way I have done this is by changing my perspective on stress, utilizing it rather than letting it become debilitating and damaging to my mental health as the article “How to Be Better at Stress” describes. I hope to continue maintaining a
At the beginning of the semester I had identified being an event planner as a dream job of mine. I also touched on that studying abroad is something I am very interested in, and hoped to pursue before my college career is over. Over the course of the semester I have been looking into possible internships abroad, to let me experience the “real world” of event planning while getting to follow one of my dreams. This course has taught me a lot about adaptation to new environments that I would hope to use in my potential, future career path as I hope to live abroad.
During week one, my initial definition of learning was listening to an instruction, studying and then rehearsing that information in my mind, or categorizing it in a way so I could remember most of what was taught in the course. The class has opened a new dimension for me in the learning process; from understanding how I process information to deciphering which learning processes I use in intentional learning or metacognition. Understanding my learning patterns form dynamic learning relationship is a key element to my view of how and why I process the learning experience, even relating it to every day life.
This question is asked at the beginning of every year, and my shallow has not changed since my freshman year. The typical "well I play tennis and soccer" "I'm shy at first but talk non-stop once you get know me," basically what everyone else says each year. Most teachers though accept that, and that is as far as they get to know about any of their students, but this is different. I get to explain that I love to be organized and that I am more than just my athletic background.
