During week one, my initial definition of learning was listening to an instruction, studying and then rehearsing that information in my mind, or categorizing it in a way so I could remember most of what was taught in the course. The class has opened a new dimension for me in the learning process; from understanding how I process information to deciphering which learning processes I use in intentional learning or metacognition. Understanding my learning patterns form dynamic learning relationship is a key element to my view of how and why I process the learning experience, even relating it to every day life. Since discovering my learning patterns by administering the Learning Connections Inventory or LCI assessment, I have discovered my …show more content…
The critical reading process drew me back to basics by redirecting my use of Sequence and Precision learning patterns to become the predominant patterns used. Sequence learning pattern was needed in the completion of discussions; I needed to focus, not only on discussions but completing all my work and submitting it on time. Having high technical reasoning and confluence learning patterns are what shaped decisions and tendencies in this class; procrastinating and being late with assignments started early in the course. Learning how to “FIT” my patterns together is a new concept which was difficult to introduce not only in my college course but in my daily life as well. Forging, Intensifying or Tethering my learning patterns are a continual activity and now that I have begun to understand how to decode a task, it will enable me to recognize the learning patterns to use, strengthen and reduce.
This course was extremely interesting to me; discovering the four different learning patterns, how they influence college coursework and my career path. I appreciated looking at the inter-working of how I learn and what I can do to enhance my learning capabilities. As the weeks went by, the on-line experience with Ashford University became easier to schedule; I used sequential and precision learning patterns to regulate my time, turning in assignments when they were due. In the past, on-line learning was tedious and difficult to manage. Ashford’s approach with an
When I first got accepted into Stuyvesant High School, I heard countless of rumors stating: “Oh the workload is terrible”, “The competition is so fierce” or “Out of schoolwork, extracurriculars, or sleep: you can only pick two.” I found it hard to let it faze me, since I graduated from one of the most prestigious middle schools. However, the rumors transformed into reality when I stepped into Mr. Nieves’ Freshman Composition Class. The workload at the beginning of the year was brutal, coupled with assignments from other core classes that seem unaware of the workload of other teachers. Reading assignments were a regular, and there were journal entries and occasional quizzes to keep us in line. What made it bearable was the friends I made in that class; everyone had their own opinion about the topic we were talking about, and listening to other perspectives really broadened my horizon and enriched my learning experience in Stuy. Another thing that this class has taught me is the importance of time management, a skill that I will carry on for the rest of my high school career and life. When I choose to sign up for Mr. Nieves’ AP American Literature class in my Junior Year, I was hoping to relive the discussion-based lesson plans and meet more outstanding peers. I was not disappointed, to say the least, reflecting through all the experiences at the end of the course. The lesson plans he laid out for us were an interesting mix between small lectures and class output, and what I
It is still so surreal to reflect back on my first semester as an incoming college student in the ENC1101 course, analyzing at my progression as a reader and writer in literacy. Since the first day of class I set in stone my goals for this class: receive a 4.0 GPA, develop my connecting theories skills in writing, and become more aware of objectives for each Unit throughout the course. All of these goals became achievements that not only make others proud but most importantly give me self pride. In order to earn the grades and achieve these goals, I went after every opportunity that I was given as an incoming college student, such as office hours and extra credit. By taking this course I have gained confidence with the utilization of literacy, and made an addition to my group of impactful literacy sponsors. Once students are finished with high school they assume that there is nothing else to learn beyond the stereotypical five paragraph essay, but they are so wrong. I was able to obtain so much knowledge about numerous course concepts from Writing about Writing, articles, and my professor. These concepts will carry on with me throughout a bright future of writing courses, job interviews, and any other skills that require literacy. The four outcomes listed below will help illuminate how I improved as a writer, by being a driven college student and going out of the way to earn my achievements in this course. In the first outcome I improved comprehending scholar texts,
Another way is knowing how to construct patterns help with learning and storing new information. According to Willis, “Once you become “brain wise,” you know how to seek and construct patterns of new information that match the way your brain most successfully stores information.” People know the importance of taking time think about what strategies helped them succeed. Another way is social, emotion, and academic intelligence is within every person’s control. With
Along a murky riverbed, long devoid of life; a lone roach scuttles along. It is often said that their kind are the only thing that can survive an apocalypse, apart from the ever changing shell of this rock hurdling through space and time. This creature, as resilient as it is fowl, may ever toil in peace; for it has no sentience or desires, and merely seeks to fulfill the simplest tasks, passed down and hard-coded into it’s DNA. Without want, pride, or a sense of being, it simply locates and consumes sustenance; in an ongoing cycle intermingled with periods of compulsive reproduction. A duty which has been the sole, simple undertaking of every member of it’s species for countless millenia. All around this creature, the land expands outward
The first two chapters of “What the Best College Students Do” cover several topics. Throughout the chapters, the lives and experiences of different college students are explored. A reoccurring theme in the book is the concept of learning styles. Essentially, the three learning styles are memorization, comprehension, and strategy. According to the author, comprehension is the most effective style of learning. While everyone will possess one of these three learning styles, it is not impossible for someone to adjust to another style. Additionally, the author elaborates on academic ideas such as independence, grades, and outside influences.
After learning the different learning patterns, I realized that many things can be classified and grouped simply by finding the pattern. In other words, we never really realize there are patterns in our actions and everyday processes until they are titled and classified. The thinking and learning process is an amazing thing and knowing in what order we perform these operations can help us to accomplish goals more realistically, knowing our capabilities and realistic abilities will enable us to both learn more efficiently as well as expand our mind and try to utilize every aspect of the learning process and strengthen our
Processing the crime scene will be essential to bringing forth criminal charges against any assailant of the crime of rape. In the case of a rape the prime crime scene is the rape victim. Biological evidence is inevitably left behind. There could in this instance be evidence left behind on sheets. In this scenario the bed of the ‘No Tell Motel’ will likely have some physical evidence such as hairs, bodily secretions, possibly condoms left behind in the trash or flushed down the toilet, clothing of the victim or the assailant. The crime scene has been contaminated by sightseers from the motel (management), and visiting
I chose to do my analysis on my fiancé Kentrall. Anyone that knows him can easily point out his learning pattern. According to the LCI test he is a strong-willed learner. His use first learning patterns are confluence, Technical reasoning, and precision. He uses sequence as needed. We are definitely opposites, he thinks that he can fix anything without reading the instructions. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.
This course activity is your opportunity to define the foundation on which you’ll build improvements in study habits, keeping in mind the goals you set and your definition of success.
What I have learned in this learning pattern; it's basically things that I already knew about myself but wasn't able to articulate them accurately. These learning patterns will help me to understand who I am as a learner and now I can use this information to apprehend others as well. I will continue to be organized and ask a lot of questions to understand the topic so I can attain as much data as I can possible take. Things don't have to be done my way, I will let others help me and welcome their ideas so to find a cohesive idea to get things done. I don’t have to work alone and I will share my knowledge with others so I can learn form as they would from
In this struggle, I explored different learning practices before homing in on the right tools for me. Repetition is my default approach to mastering new concepts. Repeating thousands of problem types, hundreds of practice tests and more than a few classes has brought me to a point where I better understand math and myself. Understanding my patterns of failure have helped me to build the persistence I need to be successful. In commiserating with my peers, they have discovered a variety of techniques. Reading, highlighting, recitation, practice tests and even tutoring work for other students. Distilled, the key interactions for learning are the ability to ask questions, to practice skills and to receive timely feedback.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
I have discovered some interesting things I have noticed in myself before taking this course. For example, my learning style I have noticed is the visual learning style.
These twelve principles are not intended to be comprehensive, but to offer participants the ability to explore implications in an open, reflective way. In addition to the twelve principles for learning there are specific conditions for complex learning to take place in the classroom, according to Caine and Caine, these conditions help in the overall system of brain-based learning. First of all, students should feel a relaxed
This essay will briefly describe a past academic learning experience that I found difficult. I will use elements of the Information Processing Model (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016) to help explain why the difficulties occurred and to uncover different strategies that could be put in place if ever I was to face this, and other situations again.
