Jacob Biggs Dr. Whetstine “Science in Cinema” Physical Science for Elementary & Middle School Teachers 5/16/2017 Science in the Cinema First off, I want to say that this was a lot harder than I originally thought this would be. I normally do not pay enough attention in movies to be able to catch the small scientific inaccuracies that some people may actually catch. So, to write this paper, I had to look up some scientific inaccuracies in movies and came up with a lot more than I thought were out there. I learned that movies actually do not follow all the scientific principles because it would either defeat the entertainment part of the movie, or it would make it to where the movie should not have even been made. Some movies include: …show more content…
In Finding Dory, the major concept of Dory remembering her parents and going to find them is completely destroyed when looking at scientific inaccuracies. Dory is a blue tang fish. In real life, a blue tang fish gives birth to their eggs in a strong current of water. The water then takes the eggs along with the current and drops them in random places. When the eggs hatch, the baby blue tang fish are then required to become independent and live on their own until they meet up with one from the opposite gender and start the process all over again (“Mistakes Found in Pixar Films”). Therefore, following this knowledge, Dory would not have known her parents at all, making it difficult for her to go find them. In order to fix this scientific inaccuracy, Dory should have been a different kind of saltwater fish all together. Now, this change would, in turn, mess with the storyline of both Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, which messes with the natural plot of the story. Since my teacher said that I could not do a scientific inaccuracy that pertains to the plot of the story, I will do another scientific inaccuracy from Finding Dory that I
Colin Furze, British plumber, turned inventor, is so well known for his videos demonstrating his crazy inventions that he’s a regular on Science Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science. He’s created everything from a pulse-jet powered bicycle to a ten hp motorized baby stroller. His latest creation, however, may be his magnum opus: With a little help from Ford Motors, Furze has managed to build a real, functioning Homemade Hoverbike.
In the legendary movie Finding Nemo you're destined to love the dory character the authors Staton and Unkrich made her very enjoyable with her humorous parts and her loving parts. She has a few problems though but her main problem is she is very forgetful.Like in the sceene when marlin is in the midle of trying to find a bout and dorry sias “Hi. I'm Dory”marlins very confused cause she already knew him. Dory really showed he funny and loveable sign when she was trying to cheer up Marlin so she started singing “ Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? just keep swimming”.That one of a lot of people's favorite scenes. Dorry really shows a lot of emotion in this scene when she says “No..no, you can't! Stop! Please
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, directed by Steven Spielberg is a movie about UFO’s being spotted in the sky by Roy and a few government agents and having three different types of close encounters. Roy, one of the main characters encounters the first kind of encounter which is UFO’s flying through the night sky. The second encounter is government agents discovering physical evidence. And the last kind which is the third kind is contact. And the scene I chose to unfold is the third kind of encounter at the end. Where man meets extra-terrestrial and they interact for the first time throughout the movie.
Throughout Of Mice and Men, the idea of how social class impacts isolation is explored through various literary techniques. The racial discrimination of the 1930’s is demonstrated through the onomastic imagery of Crooks and the setting of his home. This is evident through Crooks’ name representing his “crooked spine” and how he resides in “a little shed that leaned of the wall of the barn”. Steinbeck is demonstrating the disregard for Crooks’ place in society through his physicality being contrary from the rest and the fact that he is forced to be isolated from the other workers. Furthermore the rigid hierarchy is depicted through the juxtaposition of the citizens. The bindlestiffs “that work on ranches” are considered to be “the loneliest
This is not location, although it involves the location. As B&T say, it involves the organisation of shape, textures, and patterns of light and dark. But more than this, in SF film screen space is often a fundamental element of the narrative. Space is an element that is constructed, that takes on character in film, for example, in BLADE RUNNER. It is the construction of elements within a space, within a frame that is important.
Throughout this class, various discussions and blogs have been used to analyze the different elements of films such as theme, cinematic techniques and genre. It is time to bring all of these separate elements together in the analysis of one specific film, according to class text, “analyzing levels of meaning below the surface story can greatly enhance enjoyment as well as understanding of a film” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014. p. 10.03). There are several different approaches to film analysis including formalist, auteurist, and generic or any combination thereof. Utilizing a genre theory lens, the 1956 film The Searchers will be analyzed addressing contextual information, story/plot, aesthetic choices, social/personal impact and how these areas come together to develop the film.
Steven Spielberg used classic linear storytelling in his movies, the narrative in most of his movies were Plot driven and very effective. He is a storyteller always mindful of holding his audience. Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of today. He is master in taking stories and incidents from the past and and rejuvinating them with his own potential.
4. Is the film reliable? Explain, using your conclusions from questions 1-4. (1 paragraph, 10
With all the bad science in the media the general public is often confused as to which are the correct choices. Educating the public to be better consumers of science would improve general health and lower the need for access to healthcare (Pincus, Esther, DeWalt, & Callahan 1998).
I decided to discuss the second trimester stage of development because for me, with both of my pregnancies, that is when I started to get really excited about having a baby. There is the whole scare of losing the baby in the first trimester but also that’s when I started to feel the baby move, both times in the 16th week, when the baby, and myself, grew the most (I gained 8 pounds in the 5th month with both pregnancies), and when I got so heavy I had to walk instead of run, it was actually faster from about 18 weeks on. Babycenter.com says that the fetus of 14 weeks of age is the size of a lemon, 3 ½ inches long and weighing 1 ½ ounces, while parents.com says it’s the same weight and length but the size of a peach. At 27 weeks both sites said the babies are at 2+ pounds, 9.25-14 inches long and either the size of a head of cauliflower or a sock monkey (which wasn’t fun to look at when your trying to picture a cute little baby). On page 96 of the textbook in Figure 5.8 it is confirmed that after the 16th week the mother may start to feel the baby move. The fetus is also forming small hairs all over the body, including the scalp, and the lungs are beginning to
All of the films we viewed for this unit were very eye opening. One my favorite of the bunch was definitely Into the Wild. Chris’s journey to find absolute freedom by escaping civilization and becoming more in tune with the wild or nature was very intriguing. One point of the film that really stuck out to me was his decision to burn all of his money. He say that money make us more cautious. I believe that money does make us more cautious in everyday life. We as a society rely way too much on material things and are always trying to have bigger and better things. With wanting more we have to rely on money because with out it we cant reach our goals. I agree with Alex because I feel money does make us more cautious in everyday life. We need if to succeed and to move forward in our society. When Alex paraphrase Thoreau “ Rather than Love and fairness, give me truth”. I feel like Alex want to
Steven Spielberg uses many different filming techniques to make Jurassic Park more engaging for the audience and to develop scenes more than they would without these techniques. One of the most powerful techniques is changing the soundtrack to add tension and suspense during certain parts of a scene. One example is when the dinosaur crashes through the wall as the people start to drive away in the jeep. The speed gets faster, the pitch gets higher, and the overall soundtrack gets louder . This makes the audience slightly scared for the people, especially since only seconds ago, it was completely silent, except for the footfalls of the dinosaur and some quiet dialogue. That leads us to another one of Steven Spielberg’s techniques, which is making
Jean-Marc Vallee’s 2014 film Wild is based off of Cheryl Stryaed’s memoir “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail”. The film changes the genre by having a woman as the main character in a man vs. nature situation a rare chage from the typical hero. Vallee had a budget of $15,000,00 for the film and it brought in $4,112,752 on opening weekend, January 30, 2015. Wild, was nominated for many prestigious awards and won few. (imbd). In a initial review of the film published in The New York Times, noted film critic A. O. Scott wrote, “The film adaptation of her book — itself already a classic of wilderness writing and modern feminism — provides another reason to be grateful that she did”. Proving that the change in the genre did not
Direct Cinema The term 'direct cinema' was coined by American director Albert Maysles, to describe the style of documentary that he and his contemporaries were making in the 1960s as a result of a lightweight, portable 16mm camera and high quality lightweight audio recorders becoming available. The introduction of these, together with film-stock which was sensitive enough to give a good quality close-up monochrome picture under most lighting conditions (Including hand-held lights) led to a revolution in Documentary filmmaking, allowing film crews to be much more flexible. Gone were the days of bulky, virtually immobile 35mm cameras; now manufacturers improved their 16mm stock and accepted it
In the beginning of the course I was nervous about how well I would do and if this class would really interest me. As my first online course, this is a great experience, so great; I don 't want to take anymore face-to-face classes. However, psychology to me is the most interesting subject, but it 's nothing without a great teacher, so this might be my only great online experience.
