Course No.:ENGL 1104:11 Name : Xuefeng Zheng ID : 20122063 Finding Our Place in The Era of Robots For centuries, people have fantasized that machines could possess intelligence like the human race, and work as our most faithful servants someday. Fortunately, this dream has nearly come true in many fields today. Automatons are widely used in many areas, from self-driving cars to sex robots -- and an especially large number of applications in the mass-production industry, such as in car manufacturing and assembly technology. At the same time, it cannot be denied that some people lose their jobs when automatons or robots take their place, thousands of workers are put out of their old jobs and forced to seek new employment, even as they …show more content…
There are a wide variety of jobs that humans just can’t afford to do, but robots and automatons can overcome the limitation of human body and help us achieve some tasks that would never be humanly possible without the assistance of robots. Such as in the field of underwater exploration, the human body can’t sustain itself in the deep water but underwater robots can.Underwater robots can dive deeper and longer than any human, they can provide an up-close look at marine life and they have radically changed the way we see the world from the ocean floor. These marvelous machines are equipped with high-definition cameras, sensors, wheels and other technology to assist scientists when they explore docks, ocean floors, and other surfaces.Underwater robots are the best tool for gathering data and images of life under water, and help human beings finish some tasks which seems impossible in the past.In the same way, space robots can help astronauts perform very difficult and important tasks during space missions and give them the chance to explore space in the most amazing ways. Robots and automatons can also help us accomplish some extremely dangerous tasks without endangering humans. They can be used for mining and construction or even in the military. For instance, the military uses UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle) for reconnaissance missions,
The article, “Robots on Earth” by Jerry West, explains that although robots may be evil in movies and books, they help us more than people may think. In the article, West discusses how the opinions of the media are quite different than the jobs that real robots perform. Humans have many difficult jobs that must be done for the good of the population, which is why we have robots to complete these tasks. Chores such as welding, and working in factories harm our health; so, robots do these jobs to keep us safe. Robots in space may do simple missions so that astronauts can focus on more important duties. Also, astronauts use robotic equipment; such as treadmills; to stay healthy while in space. Other robots are used for people with disabilities
Robots can effect employment in a negative way,as said by the author Kelly “It may be hard to believe… 70 percent of today’s occupation will likewise be replaced by automation...even you will have your job taken away by machines”(Kelly Page.300), this quote comes to show the negative aspect of robots taking over the world in the near
Robots have been useful to humans since the past. They’re made to make human life easier. Since early times people have been dreaming of making robots and different people have made different kinds of robots. Robots has been useful in the past, they’re now useful in present-time, and they’re going to be useful in the future.
In an age where technology is so advanced that robots replace humans in the workplace, it is no surprise that increasingly fewer Americans are considered full-time employees. While proponents of advancement argue that technology adds a high level job for every low level job it takes away, low class manufacturing jobs will not be the only newly-automated jobs. Due to rapid advancement, computers are projected to be one thousand times more powerful in the 2030s than computers today (McChesney and Nichols, 2016, 246). With these improvements, no human’s job is safe.
The debate over whether robots are helping or hurting the workplace is more heated than ever. Advances in technology are soaring thus making an increase in the use of robots in the workplace more and more commonplace. Some believe the use of robots in the workplace can never totally result in the loss of jobs, but due to the fact that robots have invaded the workplace environment, many people fear this indicates replacement of human jobs. Although advancement in technology of robotics and artificial intelligence may offer precision, productivity, efficiency and flexibility, the loss of human jobs will be devastating to the many people who depend on their jobs to make a living and provide for their families.
Automatons are able to explore areas that humans cannot safely ignore like rubble and extract survivors without the risk of landslides. An example is the SALTO robot, which can collect data from nuclear power plant areas. “Ideally, someday a SALTO-like robot will carry small sensors capable of detecting people trapped beneath piles of debris.” Its size and agility make it an ideal scout during a search and rescue effort after an earthquake or building collapse as it won’t disturb the rubble. Once it senses a buried person, a follow-up team of human rescuers will be able to retrieve the victim. It shows how robots can be used to save lives so people don’t have to risk their lives and risk death. When opponents state that the robots could take over they don’t realize that these robots are not self sufficient enough to take over, so robots and humans will still be able to save lives
As a matter of fact, with the gradual development of science and technology, robots have been widely used in people’s work and life. On the one hand, robots have brought a mass of convenience to people.
One of the biggest controversies with the advancement of artificial intelligence is the debate on job automation. Many people believe that artificial intelligence will advance to become better than humans and replace humans in most jobs. The opposite belief is that AI will be used to improve the standard of living and will be a tool to support humans, not replace them. Job automation has many benefits such as performing more dangerous jobs and complete tasks that humans do not desire to do. Even though job automation has benefits, there are many people who believe robots will take over the job market and the unemployment rate will skyrocket. There are multiple supporting factors for each side of the job automation debate, but the argument will never be settled until AI is further advanced and utilized.
Our Jobs Are Gone Gray Scott once said, “Robots will harvest, cook, and serve our food. They will work in our factories, drive our cars, and walk our dogs. Like or not, the age of work is coming to an end.”. In this text, Scott means that technology today is more advanced than ever and robots have been more advanced to do humane jobs. In the article “Better Than Human:Why Robots Will-And-Must-Take Our Jobs”, Kevin Kelly introduces the problem that increasing automation in the workplace can effectively change the need for human needed jobs.
The auto industry would soon find itself in the same conundrum Henry Ford did at the turn of the 20th century with the Model-T, in which he made great cars but no one could afford them. The companies will have to strike a balance between automation and employee’s, if they get it right the possibilities are endless. The clear and very real dangers with these new models is that can you really be comfortable turning your life over to a machine. Will the computer be able to make the sometimes-necessary life and death calls that it may encounter? What series of algorithms, will it use to make such calculations. Mankind is brilliant in our ability to apply reason as well as ingenuity, with courage in pushing the limits of our technology. These skills have served us well as they have taken us to the moon; however, these same abilities have brought us to near destruction, one hopes that we will no longer have to mouth that silent lament to ourselves “never
While that dystopian future may seem rather extreme, a more modest proposal would follow that robots may not be eating babies, but they uncertainly threaten the value of our time within a workplace. Machines, to many companies, are a
Imagine if you would not need to help Mom and Dad, carrying stuff for them or cleaning up after them! You can have a robot help you with your daily activities such as cleaning your room, washing your car, and even wiping for you once you are done using the bathroom. A robot is a machine designed to complete or carry out multiple tasks when programmed to do so. Robots play a huge role in discovery, such as Mars Curiosity Rover, that is used to observe Mar’s surface and environment. We have used Robots to study the moons surface to see what it is like and to learn more about space. We use robots today in military by using them to disarm bombs and find enemy locations. Robots will have a positive impact on our future, because robots will help us to discover more in the ocean and space, help us save lives, and aid in the military.
Ahhh. Robots. Some may think they are creepy and some may be fascinated by how they work. But how do robots come in handy when exploring space? Robots come in handy when exploring space because of the fact that robots can travel further than a human and they also don’t need as many necessities as a human does. People may have different opinions about sending robots versus humans to space. I am in fact one of those people that have a different opinion. I go back and forth with believing that well robots are better. Then I believe that humans are better. When a robot goes to space there is more of a possibility of finding new life. A robot detects certain things that humans don’t. Robotic exploration is necessary to enable human exploration by setting the context, providing critical information, and reducing the risk to humans. When sending a human info space that can take months maybe even years of training. And when sending a robot to space that may take months even years to build. A robot may also cost A LOT more than a human. I really can’t make up my mind if robots or humans are better. Some of the biggest achievements of robotic exploration include Ceres, Vesta, and New Horizons.
If you think robots are the kind of thing you hear about in science-fiction movies, think again. Right now, all over the world, robots are performing thousands of tasks. They are probing our solar system for signs of life, building cars at the General Motors plants, assembling Oreo cookies for Nabisco and defusing bombs for the SWAT team. As they grow tougher, more mobile, and more intelligent, today’s robots are doing more and more of the things that humans can’t or don’t want to do and in many cases taking away the need for human labor.
Those unmanned robots likewise spare lives considering the fact that they preserve people from entering the dangerous situation before they recognize what is in store. For instance, robots have turned out to be progressively critical for examining and looking into perilous and unsafe conditions. These robots are equipped for getting into a dynamic spring of gushing lava to collect statistics or an eating operating to search for casualties.
