Katie Jackson Dwiggins 6th Historical Research 01 November 2016 First thanksgiving The first thanksgiving was way different today than it was 100 years ago. How the first thanksgiving started with the harvest celebration of pilgrims and the native americans that took place in the autumn of 1621. The first thanksgiving was not a celebration back then it was more like a gathering. Usually on our thanksgiving dinner table we would have turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, cornbread, and a sweet treat of pumpkin pie. Back then they simply had turkey a little bit of bread because the dough was very rare and hard to make, And pumpkin pie if they were lucky because of the rare dough.

This year Thanksgiving is on November 23,2017. Every year my family Thanksgiving is the best, to me at least. So we always have Thanksgiving at my Grandmas and Grandpas, but not this year we are having it at my house. Which I mean could be good and bad. Good is it is at my house so it’s cool and bad, the house has to be completely spotless or my mom will freak out. Normally what we do every year is we get my family together and have dinner, mess around, and watch football. This year my dad's brother is coming with his three daughters and his wife and my grandpa and grandma. I really can’t wait to see them all because I don't really see them that much as I would like to. When we have a family dinner like this we always have a lot of food for everyone.
Being only one month apart in date, Christmas and Thanksgiving have two very different seasons. In November, when its considered fall, leaves have changed colors, the temperature has dropped some and the air brings crisp breezes. Often than not, you’ll see hay rides being offered, corn mazes and folks not quite in their full winter attire. But when Christmas time rolls around snow has fallen, not a trace of leaves on the trees and a bit too cold for hay rides and corn mazes. This would be one month later, in December, where you will see town’s people bundled up in their warmest winter gear, building snowmen or making snow angels. Two individual seasons that are

The truth behind the tradition is surprising. Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims seem to go together, but the truth is, the Pilgrims never held an autumnal Thanksgiving feast. However the Pilgrims did have a feast in 1621, after their first harvest, and it is this feast, which people often refer to as "The First Thanksgiving". This feast was never repeated, though, so it can't be called the beginning of a tradition, nor was it termed by the colonists or "Pilgrims" a Thanksgiving Feast. In fact, a day of thanksgiving was a day of prayer and fasting, and would have been held any time that they felt an extra day of thanks was called for. Nevertheless, the 1621 feast has become a model that we think of for our own

A day before Thanksgiving in 1971 a guy that called himself Dan Cooper boarded the NorthWest Airlines on flight 305. He was in a wearing a dark suit with a black business-like tie. While Dan was in the airplane he opened a brief case and showed the flight attendant a bomb. When the plane landed in Seattle, Dan demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and food for the crew. He let the passengers off the plane but left three pilots and a flight attendant on board. The crew in the airplane headed South of Seattle while it was dark and drizzling. 45 minutes after takeoff Dan sent the flight attendant to the cockpit while he was putting on the parachute. Dan also tied the money to himself and lowered the back stairs and somewhere in Portland
A prevalent opposing viewpoint is that the first Thanksgiving stemmed from the massacre of Pequot people in 1637, the climax of the Pequot War. While it is true that a day of thanksgiving was noted in the Massachusetts Bay and the Plymouth colonies afterward, it is not accurate to say it was the basis for our modern Thanksgiving. Plymouth was already a village with clear fields and a spring when the Pilgrims found it. This place was lovely, and the reason it was available because every single native person who had been living there was a corpse.
Thanksgiving is a celebrated holiday around the United States, it started many years ago, and still continues to be celebrated to this day! It’s almost that time of year again and people are already starting to get ready for the holiday. Thanksgiving is an older holiday, it was first celebrated with the Pilgrims and the Indians. This week, families across our state are unboxing their Thanksgiving décor, choosing table cloths, and deciding who is going to be responsible for what dish next Thursday. It’s that time of the year when we come together, forget our family drama for at least a week and get in the holiday spirit. Unfortunately, this holiday season comes with a different taste to many. Hundreds of Iowan families and I will share our Thanksgiving meal with uncertainty, anxiety and fear.

While children are growing up in America, they are told several tales of America’s establishment and history. However, these stories are generally not told as they actually happened. An instance of this is the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is explained as this elaborate ceremony where the Pilgrims and Indians gathered in harmony at this large harvest in celebration of their coming together. According to the primary document of William Bradford’s journal, Thanksgiving didn’t pan out quite as it is explained to Americans today. In the film, The Addams Family Values, the Addams children take part in a traditional, yet misconceived celebration of the first Thanksgiving. This
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate our joys with friends and family. Unfortunately, if you are the person designated to cooking the holiday dinner, the joys can turn into complete and total fear. I'll never forget the first time I made Thanksgiving dinner for twenty family members and friends. I waited until the last minute to start and the dinner ended in a complete disaster. In the years following that failure, I have learned that preparing a Thanksgiving dinner is easy...if you plan ahead.
