Hearing the media blast news of an airplane that went down would stop anyone in their tracks, but knowing that one must travel soon would make that traveler second guess their decisions of choosing air transportation as their primary source of passage. Although crashes are very rare, when they occur there is an extreme amount of media coverage of the horrific event. Furthermore, it is being able to comprehend how those specific roles impact effective decision making and CRM as a whole. No matter what position a person holds, each crewmember must learn to become a leader within their specific position. Additionally, leadership characteristics includes the ability to establish competence (including technical, social and managerial areas), the ability to disavow perfection, and the capability to engage the crew. On the other hand, followership characteristics include being subordinate of personal interests, have a social capacity to work well with others, and a commitment and competency required to accomplish group goals. As a child, I dreaded boarding an airplane due to the altitude and the pressure closing one’s ears, a terrifying experience. In addition to my fear of airplanes, flights would absolutely bore me. Hence, my impatient reaction of shaking my leg in a fast paced, up-down motion, a nervous tick. Over the years, every time my parents announced a trip that required an airplane flight, the idea would horrify me. Nevertheless, the distinct moments I boarded airplanes, there were always hints of curiosity about the bird-shaped flying machine. How does this strange machinery work? How could an airplane be this frightening? That fear was the foundation of my commitment to aerospace engineering.

The role of the follower and the quality of the relationship itself are informally negotiated between followers and their leaders over time (Gils, Quaquebeke, & Knippenberg, 2009). Based on the LMX theory, leaders build a special relationship with an inner circle, or “in-group”, of followers, who often get high levels of responsibility and access to resources. The in-group members work harder and are more committed to task objectives. They are also expected to be totally committed and loyal to their leader. A terrorists primary aim is to instill fear within a group of people (Einav 2003). As was seen after 9/11 where passengers dropped worldwide by 4% due to fear of flying (Costa, Harned et al. 2002).

Riggio et al (2008), provides examples on the various styles of individuals as followers, for instance, the sheep, the yes-people, the alienated, the pragmatics, and the star followers.
