Food, Inc. is a 2008 documentary directed by Robert Kenner. The film has faced criticism from multiple food producers, including Tyson Foods and the Monsanto Company, who fear the film is attacking their practices and will result in them losing business. The documentary examines the practices of these companies, most of whom hold a monopoly over the industry, and argues that the food produced is unhealthy for the environment, employees, and consumers. The film combines narrative techniques and imagery to present this central argument and present a call to action. The documentary opens with various depictions of supermarkets, examining the various products that are available for purchase. The narrator mentions a “pastoral fantasy” and states, “you go into the supermarket and you see pictures of farmers… the picket fence… and the green grass.” This depiction argues that the images we see on product labels and in the pictures that cover store walls drop a “deliberate veil...between us and where our food is coming from. Captions appear on the screen explaining how many farmers and ranchers are afraid to show what really occurs after receiving threats from their purchasers. This reinforces the idea that these companies have something to hide, and they are threatening to stop purchasing products from those who speak out against them. The film also shows various images of animals (chickens, pigs, cows, etc) being killed and then cut up and packaged before being sent to your local grocery store. These images are disturbing and tug at the viewer’s heart, making them outraged at the abuse these animals face.
