Entering the 2016 NFL season, the AFC North had statistically been the best division in football in terms of average wins per season (8.35 wins per team) over the past decade. Keep in mind that the division includes the hapless Cleveland Browns, which have had one winning season over that span, and the feat becomes all the more impressive.
During their decade run as the best division in football, the AFC North’s success has been predicated on tough-nose defense and consistent quarterback play. Omitting the Browns, AFC North teams all have “franchise” quarterbacks entering 2017 in Ben Roethlisberger (15th season), Joe Flacco (10th season) and Andy Dalton (7th season).
However, despite continually solid production from the quarterback

Although it’s highly arguable that Flacco hasn’t lived up to his monster contract, the blame certainly shouldn’t fall entirely on his shoulders.
In 2013, the once vaunted Ravens defense lost longtime leader Ray Lewis to retirement, along with a record eight starters from the previous year’s championship squad. Following a disappointing 8-8 record that season, things got even worse for the Ravens in 2014 with the Ray Rice’s domestic violence fiasco, which significantly hurt the franchise on and off the field.
Essentially, Baltimore has been an aggressively mediocre football team since their magical postseason run in 2012 (32-34), which Flacco deserves partial blame for. Yes, the Ravens quarterback hasn’t exactly been provided with top-tier weapons to work with, but Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady have put up MVP-caliber numbers, while leading their respective teams to the playoffs during seasons in which both had much less support around them.
Entering 2017, Flacco loses yet another weapon in Steve Smith, and he’ll need Mike Wallace and free agency pickup Jeremy Maclin to pick up the slack. For a team that loves to pound the rock, the Ravens are fairly thin in the backfield; but they picked up Danny Woodhead in the offseason, who should help if he can stay healthy.
Defensively, the Ravens appear to be
“Including playoff games, no team over a long term has averaged as many wins as New England, 13.8, in a season. The Patriots’ 13.8 wins is a full win better, on average, In 16 seasons beginning in 2001, New England has won five Super Bowls and 14 division titles. ” It is one accomplishment to win in the regular season and be dominant when the games don't mean as much, however when the lights are bright and all eyes, cameras, and spectators are watching you on the biggest stage in the National Football League and you deliver with wins consistently is a testament to the strength and unbelievable coaching by Bill
The cleveland browns have went through a lot of quarterbacks and coaches in the past 16 years. Ever since the browns came back in 1999 they have not made it to the playoffs. They have one of the best defenses in the whole NFL
Fortunately, Mike McCarthy has a guy named Aaron Rodgers, who is a pretty decent quarterback and will undoubtedly carry Green Bay again in 2017. Without Rodgers, the Packers would be mediocre (at best), but with No. 12 behind center, they could be NFC North champions for the sixth time in the past seven seasons by the time next season is over.
Since the loss of Simeon Rice, the Bucs have had a difficult time getting to the QB. Not one player has registered 10 sacks since Rice left.. First, Gaines Adams was the savior but ended up a complete failure. Then Adrian Clayborn and Da’Quon Bowers seemed to be the answer. Bowers ended up doing virtually nothing and Adrian Clayborn was average at best.
In the NFC West, you have the usual suspects, the Seattle Seahawks, currently possessing a 6-3 record. But the Los Angeles Rams (yes, the Rams) haven’t looked this explosive since the “Greatest Show on Turf” torched defenses in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Even with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, an NFL team can only withstand so many injuries. They’ve been without Jordy Nelson all season, Randall Cobb has been playing with a hurt shoulder all year long, Eddie Lacy hasn’t been in shape, Davante Adams hasn’t been 100 percent since week one, and their starting cornerbacks started the year at number three and four on the depth chart.
The Ravens were a trendy Super Bowl 50 pick, [comma] but had a rough season and finished 5-11. Dumervil is signed with the Ravens for two more seasons, so there’s still a chance of reaching his first Super Bowl with Baltimore.
Flacco’s college career started in Pittsburgh where he was redshirted for a team that went 8-5. In 2004, he became the backup quarterback that limited his playing time behind starter Tyler Palko. He only played in three games against Ohio, Nebraska, and South Florida. He finished the season with one completion for 11 yards. At Delaware Flacco saw his first full-time action in the 2006 season. He threw for 2,783 yards, and 18 touchdowns with 10 interceptions and Delaware struggled to a 5–6 record. They missed the FCS Playoffs. In the 2007 season he led his team to an 8–3 regular season record and had 4,263 yards, 23 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Flacco set 20 school records during his career at Delaware. In early September 2009, a 20- by 30-foot poster of Flacco was added to the Delaware Stadium.
At 8-0 the Bengals have some breathing room in the AFC North. They sit four games up in the loss column on the second place Steelers.
The team lost its game the next week to the Pittsburgh Steelers and has had only one playoff appearance since then, a 36-33 loss to the Steelers in 2002. That was after the team left town, becoming the Baltimore Ravens and then reappeared as an expansion team in 1999. The Browns have had only two winning seasons since then and seven head coaches. Many NFL experts blame a lack of stability in the franchise for its poor showing. An article in sportingnews.com noted poor first round draft picks the team has had, mentioning linebacker Craig Powell, linebacker Mike Junkin, running back William Green, running back Trent Richardson, and others.
In other sports such as basketball one player really can turn a loser into a winner (see Lebron James) but that’s just not the case in the NFL. If it were, Payton Manning, Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady would win every Super Bowl, but that hasn’t happened. In fact the majority of recent Super Bowls were won by TEAMS with a good QB and a dominant defense (Seattle, Baltimore, New York). We saw what happened to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, his offensive line couldn’t hold up against the dominant Seattle defense and down they went.
In 2008, a season after New England suffered their only loss in the Super Bowl; Tom Brady went down for the year in the first regular season game. Backup Matt Cassel stepped in and led the team to an 11-5 record. The next year, with Brady back, the team went 10-6.
Coming out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Steelers are the NFL team that play in the AFC North division. Founded in 1933 by Art Rooney, the Pittsburgh Steelers are the oldest franchise in AFC history. The Steelers can be considered as the most successful teams in NFL history, as they have won more Super Bowl titles that any other NFL franchise. The team enjoys a large and dedicated fanbase, who have been nicknamed the ‘Steeler Nation’ and plays their home games at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
To put this year's record in perspective, the Buccaneers are on the verge of surpassing their win total from last
One of the team’s biggest strengths is their powerhouse offense. But the man under center is what makes that powerhouse offense run. That man is Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the league if not the best. His statistics are unbelievable. He has the highest quarterback rating in NFL history at 103.8, while the second closest is 98.9. He has thrown 300 touchdowns to only 74 interceptions. That being a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio, also the best in NFL history. One of his most impressive streaks was his success at home. In 2015, he threw an interception at home. The last one he threw at home before that was in 2012. He went three years without throwing an interception at home. Truly a remarkable feat. In 2011, Aaron had one of the best seasons
