The use of force by law enforcement officers is described by the Internal Association of Chiefs of Police as the “amount of effort required by police to compel compliance by an unwilling subject” (National Institute of Justice, 2016). The amount of force used by the law enforcement officer is situational based dependent the officer’s perception and the subject’s actions (National Institute of Justice, 2016). When a law enforcement officer uses force, they should only use the amount of force necessary to de-escalate the incident, make an arrest, or protect themselves or others from harm (National Institute of Justice, 2016).
