Living in Minnesota, students know what it’s like to hope for a snow day simply because it’s just one less day at school. There actually happens to be a way we could have one less day of school every week for the entire year. A four day school week needs to be incorporated into schools because the pros greatly outweigh the cons. A four day school week lessens environmental impact, cuts back on costs, and improves student and teacher morale. We have a couple huge problems on our hands. The high school drop out rate is at a much higher percentage than anyone would like to admit which is creating immense long term problems. Our education system is flawed due to our economy. Students would also need to power through longer school days in order to meet instructional hour requirements. If students are less attentive, their performance will drop. If absent, students will miss more material due to the longer school days. Students could forget curriculum over the extra day not in school. Despite these points having some real validity to them, four day school weeks can lessen our environmental impact. With one less day of school, fewer people will be commuting to school facilities.That means students and staff will be on the road 20% less, which in turn, cuts back on pollution. Buses are not in any way ecofriendly, so one less day of them on the roads could cut back on emissions greatly. Logically, less energy would be used to power buildings. A four day school week cuts back on costs. With one less school day for buses to run, transportation costs would be cut. Less money will be spent on facilities, janitorial, and utilities.
