In the sixteenth century, France’s efforts to colonize North America was jeopardized by religious conflict between the Catholics and the Protestants. The French were interested in fur trade; this became the focal point of the economy and lead to the establishment of New France. The Company of New France would be in authority of this settlement. Quebec would become the first French settlement in Canada because of Samuel de Champlain’s efforts. Ultimately, New France would have about 15,000 residents by the 1700s.
In 1534 the French navigator and explorer Jacques Cartier entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and took possession of New France for King Francis I.

Europe’s long history greatly affected the world’s structure today in a multitude of ways. How did countries such as England and France establish their borders along the continent? Modern boundaries affected the world in numerous ways. The extensive Hundred Years’ War raged from 1337 to 1453 and played a key role in solidifying borders in Europe (Hundred Years’ War np). Conflict over the throne of France ignited a bitter war between England and France when English kings claimed their right to the French throne (Curry 3). Several significant battles during the war included The Battle of Crecy, The Battle of Poitiers, The Battle of Agincourt, and The Battle of Castillon. Arise of new technology changed warfare such as the usage of cannons that
Southern France became a hotbed of heretical beliefs in the twelfth century. The church began to try and bring Southern France back under its control and eradicate heresy first with debates, intended to show the heretics their errors theologically and then produce a confession. One such example is “A Debate between Catholics and Heretics.” The document narrates a debate in Lombard in 1165. The debate involved the Bishop of Albi with another bishop, three abbots, and high ranking observers, opposing the Cathar bishop of Albi, Sicard le Cellerier,1 The author of the document however is unknown. Considering it reads like an official record it was most likely just that. The document does list all Catholic representatives, therefore I believe we

There have been traces of human life found in current day France from approximately 1.8 million years ago; however current day France was not established until 1789. However, before this the land was uncivilized and was taken over my many groups. When the Republic of France officially was established as the First Republic under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon then made himself emperor in 1804. However in 1815 the Congress of Vienna restored the order with Louis XVIII. The people did not like this change and in 1848,Prince Louis Napoleon declared the Second Empire. Then, when the Prussian War broke out in 1870, he was abducted and the Third Republic was created. Next, when WWII broke out, Germany took over and occupied half of France.
Unless you live in a cave, you know what “La France” is, its idea, its Eiffel tower, its way of life, its universalism.Rival of Britain for centuries, French Empire and European Imperialism, France has marked the world landscape by its specificity. Through the name “La Grande Nation” for the Germans or this “Je ne sais quoi” for the British, France is still enjoying a great image throughout the world.France maybe alternately charming, endearing, irritating, frustrating, but most of all France is admired in our planet. Wine, Fragrance, Luxe, Cinema, Diplomacy and of course the legendary baguette, France is the cradle of the “Art de vivre”.It is merely impossible to do an exhaustive list of what to visit or see in France. From Strasbourg to Bordeaux, from Nice to Paris, without
This article is meant to make sure that the government is working for the people and making laws that are representative of what the general public wants.France since they have lived under a monarchy since the 5th century so the idea that the person in power would make laws that benefited the general public instead of themselves was revolutionary. Another important article is article #5
There are presently two primary camps held by scholars of Vichy government and World War II in regards to the popular topic of France’s involvement in the oppression of its Jewish residents during World War II. One faction argues that the actions of the French during the German occupation of France were necessary to protect the nation, claiming that the occupation was one of accommodation. The second group argues that policy, at least for the first two years of the German occupation, was controlled by the new Vichy government and that the anti-Semitic legislation was supported by French politicians without Nazi persuasion; therefore, their occupation was one of collaboration or, at the very least, one of culpability. This project will examine
Republic in France. Although that was France’s third republic, it was France’s first stable republic. Between the years of 1800 and 1871, France had been governed by two monarchies, two republics, and two empires. There were many more issues for France that just political turmoil. France was dealing with major cultural, economic, and technological changes. Once industrialization become a bigger deal, the authority that was traditionally that of the Catholic Church began to weaken. Durkheim came to wonder what held the thread of societies together for him to ensure the one he lived in didn’t fall apart again. This became what Durkheim understood as the task of sociology. Sociology was meant to be a scientific study of society for Durkheim.
Some cultural traits that have defined French society and culture since the 16th century are the French music, and art. Both of these play a huge part of the French culture and is part of the main reason why France is known for everything that they do. Many people would ask, “How did France start all of these cultural traits?” A lot of people would also ask “Are there more traits that France has?” I will be talking about in order of what these cultural traits are, why they are important, the influence that these cultural traits had on the French natives and even tourists, and what I think of the French cultural traits.

Before Marie Antoinette married Dauphin Louis XVI in 1770, the situation in France was already beginning to become disordered. The peasants, which made up about 90% of the population at the time, were treated unfairly and began to feel frustrated and upset with the Monarchy. At the time, Marie Antoinette was distrusted because of her foreign birth and many of the peasants saw her as the source of their problems and disliked her. She was often seen in the past as a bad Queen due to her careless spending and seemingly frivolous lifestyle, now with more evidence and sources, opinions have shifted. Many see Marie Antoinette as a victim of her own circumstances, as it can be seen by the state of affairs in France before her arrival, her upbringing and public opinion before her death during the French Revolution. This essay will illustrate that Marie Antoinette was indeed a victim of her circumstances.
