In Frankenstein written by Mary Shelly, Victor, and the monster share similarities driven by their thirst for knowledge. It evokes powerful feelings of hatreFld against the other’s existence, eventually leading to their self-destruction. Moreover, the pursuit of knowledge causes them to live very lonely lives. Thus, Victor constantly longs for his family and friend’s affection while the monster implores Victor to create him a partner. By analyzing Victory Frankenstein and the monster’s desire for knowledge, I aim to lay bare that the two tragic characters in this novel are extremely similar to one another. Victor Frankenstein’s thirst for knowledge results in his mastery of chemistry and philosophy. His obsession with his research leads him to the idea of playing God. Frankenstein imagines a “new species … to bless [him] as its creator and source” (Shelly 32) and eventually to “renew life where death had … devoted the body to corruption” (Shelly 32). Frankenstein’s combination of a craving for knowledge and his self-centered ego to control life and death gives birth to the monster. This act marks the stage of his downfall. Frankenstein’s health quickly deteriorates from the shock of seeing the monster’s hideous appearance, and he suffers repeated illnesses after discovering each time the monster murders his family or friends.
