Franklin D. Roosevelt's Impact on the Great Depression Essay

On June 6, 1941, United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made a speech that has since been known as “The Four Freedoms Speech.” In this speech, he outlines four freedoms he hopes every person in the world will obtain in the future. He identifies the four freedoms as the following: “...Freedom of speech and expression — everywhere in the world... freedom of every person to worship God in his own way — everywhere in the world… freedom from want — which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants — everywhere in the world… freedom from fear — which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor — anywhere in the world.”

Could whites and Indians have lived peaceably in the trans-Mississippi West? I do not think that the whites and Indians could have lived peacefully in the trans-Mississippi West. I believe this is because of the ways the Indians were living and hunting. Also with how the whites were not concerned with their customs and only had a one track mind on what they wanted of their land. The government “attempted” to keep peace by pressuring the Indians into treaties that were only broken and then new ones would be made. In the great depression people in cities and towns already lost too many jobs. Farmers struggles have already been happening since the 1920s, and farmers tried to do anything to save their farms. The great depression hit the nation quite hard with an un-comparable feeling of instability and weakness. The United States and other nations including Europe and Great Britain were quickly affected. The depression, caused by the fall of the stock market in 1929, caused many individuals to panic and the depression was everywhere by 1932. Many people were affected by the depression. Franklin Delano Roosevelt also known as FDR was the 32nd president of the United States and is known for being one of the greatest in history. He was a democrat and the only president to be elected four times into office even though he was unable to serve his full terms; he was still able restore the economy from The Great Depression with his New Deal domestic policies. The New Deal named the four important things to America during those times which were relief, recovery and reform. Establishing programs such as the Public Works Administration and Social Security which helped Americans back to work and help give aid to elderly people. FDR would also face other problems during his presidency such as pressure to get involved in World War II. Many actions would cause America’s involvement in World War II such as the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor, USS Panay and Germany’s unrestricted use of submarine warfare.

For instance, FDR had prior knowledge that major communities in the nation had a huge a distrust of the government, the president wanted to achieve that reliance again so that there would be a growing economy once more in the U.S. The belief that FDR had of doing everything you can to make things better illustrates to us and the people of the time that he wanted to gain that trust and faith that everyone had lost because of the prior leader and the depression. Furthermore, President Roosevelt had made a speech covering everything that he was willing to do for his country and the faith of the people. This shows that he wanted to approach everything to make the past a learnable experience and to move on from the tragic downfall the U.S had. Thirdly, He wasn’t afraid to loose a lot from the the New Deal programs because he wanted to support the country in need. The President had established an act called the social security act and it was a step forward to the the acts that he had assigned before and after. Assuming the Presidency at the depth of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped American people obtain faith in there selves. He brought as much hope as he promised prompt, vigorous action, and asserted in his Inaugural Address, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Sensing that the first three months were most important parts of his administration, which showed the measure of accomplishments of a president, FDR put his plan into action. He first confronted the bank crisis and tried to tackle a banking system that was on the verge of collapsing. The first part of his idea, FDR requested a banking holiday that called for an emergency closing of all banks and halted all bank activities. During this time, FDR called for an emergency congress meeting and passed the Emergency Banking Act that issued urgent funds to banks that had potential and was on the verge of closing. Soon after the congress passed the Glass-Steagall Act that prohibited commercial banks from making financial investments. The Glass-Steagall Act also established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which protected and refunded money of individual depositors. These banking reforms were only temporary and did not provide assurance for the future. These reforms and programs were not effective at the time of the Great Depression because most America families, at that time, did not have enough money to pay for necessities, meaning that they did not have excess wealth or money to put into banks. Franklin D. Roosevelt was prominent during America’s periods of turmoil. During the Great Depression he was well known for his organizations of relief, recovery, and reform; and at the time of World War II, he used his leadership to gain victory for the Allied forces. Roosevelt left many legacies behind that did not begin during his presidency, but when he was born.

Citizens of the United States were questioning their nation’s unity from 1929 to 1945. They were in a time of misfortune and they were in need of a leader to take charge. Franklin D. Roosevelt was courageous because he led the nation through the Great Depression, World War II, and he contributed to finding a cure for polio.

The Great Depression not only affected the United States but the world in general. In my estimation some the reasons for the depression was the combination of the greatly unequal distribution of wealth throughout the 1920’s and the debts not paid back from WWI.
