Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, into a wealthy family. With his family’s support and wealth, Roosevelt graduated Groton School for boys and attended Columbia University Law School. For the next three years of his life, Roosevelt practiced law in New York, until he was invited to run for the New York senate in 1910. Roosevelt was reelected in 1912, giving him confidence throughout the senate. In 1920, he was on the Democratic ticket with James Cox, but unfortunately got defeated by Warren G. Harding. Later in his life, Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio. This disease caused him to become paralyzed from the waist down. The New Deal took action to bring about immediate economic relief as well as reforms in industry, agriculture, finance, waterpower, labour, and housing (“New Deal”). The New Deal Program helped unemployed people find jobs and provide for their families. Agencies such as the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) were established to dispense emergency and short-term governmental aids, providing temporary jobs. The New Deal also regulated the nation’s financial hierarchy in order to avoid repeating the stock market crash. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA), and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) were organizations to help manage money, supply families with the cheapest electricity, and reduce agricultural production and raise the value of crops (“New Deal”). He helped lead the nation out of the Great Depression, Pearl Harbor and WWII. Roosevelt is the only president to serve this country for 12 year, longer than any other man in the nation’s history. During his presidency, he spread his hope and optimism with the American people. He never lost hope for America. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, where he died from a cerebral hemorrhage (Freidel).
