‘Free’ Fitness in the fitness center instead of a typical Gym classes Only 19 percent of all high school students are physically active for 20 minutes or more, five days a week, in physical education classes (insert in text-citation). But why does physical education classes have to be like this? non-enjoyable for the students? hardly physical enough? as well as an environment that's not stress relieving nor confidence building? As a grade nine student that has been at Havergal College for 2 years i have to admit i do enjoy having a class where it's not all school-work based, and a class where we don't have to where our daily uniform. However, i feel it would be better in a physical perspective, and more appealing to the students if …show more content…
You develop a sense of accomplishment where you can focus on a single task for a certain amount of time, and when its finished you feel the energy and optimism in you that helps you remains calm and clear in everything you do. This calming and clearing mind helps towards many things in a girls life, especially towards girls daily school work. Consequently, free fitness would act as a stress relieving class because it improves your overall mood, and it meditation in motion. Both of these points can ease your stress levels and give you a sense of common overall your body and life. Not only is free fitness better than gym class because of it’s amusing and care-free environment, but free fitness would build confidence for many insecure girls as well. In particular, free fitness would build confidence because it allows girls to set their own personal goals. If girls set their own personal fitness goals and not what the teacher expects then she will most likely have a better chance of achieving those goals. This is because every girl knows how their body and mind set works best, and with that knowledge she can achieve those goals. The feeling of achieving something you have wanted to work towards, even if its just doing 10 more reps of one thing or stretching more often, can make you feel happier with your looks, and in how you feel. In addition to this point, free fitness would build confidence because girls would not compare themselves to others. By doing 'free'
Physical education classes are not enjoyed by all, in fact, some students do their best to get out of the class each day, but without this class, students would sit in school for seven hours a day with the only exercise being walking from class to class. While changing clothes and possibly getting sweaty may not seem productive for students who have spent an hour doing their hair, or feel awkward changing in front of others, this class provides positive ways of fighting obesity, releasing energy, retaining more academically, and learning discipline. Thus, students should be required to take physical education courses in high school.
Thirdly, physical exercise itself could re-shape our body, make body stronger and looks healthier. It hence can improve individual’s attractiveness and confidence and hence can enable a positive life attitude. Fourthly, since the physical exercise normally would enable individual to interact with others, socialising with participants and friends in a such low-stress way might meet human’s belonging needs. It therefore could make people have a good mood and recharge themselves to fight against stress (Elizabeth, 2011).
I drag myself to the gym several times a week. The drive to Healthbridge is agonizing because most of time, especially in bone chilling weather and when I’m working thirty hours a week on top of school, I rather be curled up in bed reading or catching up on my latest Netflix addiction Shameless. But exercising is important, and I try to squeeze in a good workout in between the several other things sucking up my time. I’m a biomedical science major; I understand the science behind why exercise is good for the body, but I also have the common sense to understand that the way physical education is taught is not intense enough for students to benefit. For example, today we pulled each other around the gym on towel. . .what are the students getting
Stress from school can be helped by having a good amount of exercise everyday, it helps relax your whole body when you're done. A lot of parents now days complain about their teen having a bad, aggressive behavior, and believe it or not exercise also helps teens get rid of those bad behaviors at school or at home. Secondly exercise helps teens have a better self-esteem. In the second passage Brennan explains "Exercise also boosts circulation and delivery of nutrients to the skin, helping to detoxify the body by removing toxins (poisons)." (Brennan 7) Teens often worry about their skin and appearance, mostly because at this age is when the majority suffer from acne. With exercise the skin gets healthier because of all the blood flow and nutrients it's receiving so teens won't worry about having bad skin. The third passage states "teenagers who took part in organized sports had more positive self-image and greater self-esteem than teens who were not physically active."(Neighbond 10) Joining school physical activities helps teens or children feel better about themselves and feel more confident. They don't have to join a sport but just
It could even be a time when they could learn new things and meet new people. Gym class is one of the only times that students get to learn and participate in physical activity, as Rae Pica stated in her blog, “For many children physical education class is their only opportunity to learn about the relationships among exercise, nutrition, and health. It is their only opportunity to engage in moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity.” Students only get this education maybe once in a day, depending what that school’s schedule is like. It isn’t fair to the students to take away that type of learning and fill it with forced reading and math skills. They’re already being fed full of those topics, and by making gym class full of those topics it is not giving them the creative break the students need. Every child needs to experience having fun without acknowledging math and reading skills. If students learn from doing these activities then why don’t they do them in the regular classroom?
Usually a gym class lasts for one semester each school year, if I’m practicing all year round, six days a week, what is the point of me getting 44 minutes more of exercise every other day. And I practice six out of seven days a week while Arrowhead students go two or three days a week with gym. And a last note to remind you of is the fact that not only is sports fun and games, but it’s also takes a huge component of tremendous strength. Each practice I do 30 to 45 minutes of strength training, which is more than they do in a school gym class. I took a gym class over the summer, to be able to take more classes and have more study halls during the school year, and we maybe did ten minutes of strength training each class and had one ‘fitness day’. Otherwise we were playing games like capture the flag, pirates ball, hockey, and dodgeball. We are also required to do state fitness testing, and from experience, most of the kids that participate in sports throughout the year can easily reach the ‘fit zone’ and go above average when testing. I find it to be a waste of time for year round athletes to have to participate in a gym class, when they put in plenty of hours more in exercise out of
In college, students tend to spend a huge portion of their day involved with academic activities. The students are pressured to do well in all of their required classes, even if physical education is not involved in their required classes. First semester college freshmen tend to spend most of their day in their room studying or doing homework, when in reality they should spend some of their day in a gym or playing an intense sport. For some students, the transition from high school (where fitness is a mandatory class) to college (where the students can take the classes they want whenever they want) is difficult. Since the classes they take enforce difficult topics, students tend to neglect physical education due to the increase amount of dedication
According to the National Institute of Health, 35.7% of adults are considered to be obese. Gym classes can help make a child exercise, therefore decreasing the probability of obesity during their adulthood. Gym classes can teach students good habits to keep during adulthood. In addition, it can tremendously benefit the health of the students. Finally, it can help with students performance in school. P.E. should be mandatory everyday in every state across the country.
Physical education should be a fun class, but fun does not have to mean chaos. I believe in a structure that will allow the students to have fun in a safe way. My lesson plans will be structured so that students are constantly engaged in physical activity. I feel that if I can keep students moving and learning, then the chances of misbehavior will decrease. In elementary school I feel that Instant Activities should be used to get students moving when they get into my class. High school is a little different. I feel that students at the secondary school level should be introduced physical fitness activities that will help keep them in shape later on in life.
I think that the kids need to learn how to stay fit. The kids get shortage of exercise during their school day. Therefor the students need to get physical movement during their day. Physical education provides the students with varieties of workouts for the kids. The students love to go to PE because they get to be with their friends and they get learning they need to get about their body. Being mobile is vital to these kids they like active and they would be more alert in class.
Fitness is something every college student struggles with. With the high levels demanded of college students, such as research papers, group projects, assignments, jobs, and overall lack of sleep it can become very difficult to find the time to workout or be active. Student like to be active thought because it helps put them in a better mood. They are able to relax and have more energy. If students come in with a plan though they are more likely to stick to their routine and maintain their workout plan. It also helps to have a person to workout with. This allows for both individuals to motivate each other to stay on their workout routine, this especially helps for women. Generally though, by setting your mind to staying fit, you will not only see the benefits physically, but it will also help individuals set goals that are achievable in life and help maintain their stress level (Whelan, 2016).
Here at MCHS you only have to have PE once in four years you are here. It only lasts half a school year and most of the time kids do not do anything in there. This class is an opportunity for students to be active and healthy by doing exercise. The problem with PE is that students do not participate because the PE teacher does not care and just gives them an easy grade. This is why schools should enforce this and give them a grade off of their effort put forward. Reason being is, “a panel of national obesity experts convened by the CDC determined that children should get an hour of exercise over the course of each day. Yet CDC data reveal that participation in high school physical education classes declined by more than 10% between 1991 and 2003, and more than a third of high school students nationwide do not engage in vigorous physical activity.”(Diet,
If phy ed was more largely based on effort, it would eliminate the need for physical fitness testing for a letter grade. Although phy ed class helps most fit students raise their GPA, some kids are just not athletic and no matter how hard they try, they may never reach a level of physical fitness to achieve a top grade. Furthermore, students that are overweight may struggle to meet the physical qualifications needed to achieve an A. Students that are not as confident in their physical fitness ability may be intimidated to perform required fitness testing in front of other
“Physical education hopes to accomplish, to engage all students, not just the athlete elite, in fun activities that will instill a lifelong commitment to fitness.” (Johnson, 264). Physical education in the classroom can be a vital steeping stone to the way that teenagers think about fitness. Lifelong fitness is something that everyone should be guaranteed, it mainly depends on the experience that a teenager has. Like many other subjects in school, the
But physical education isn't only exercising. It can be sports too. Even if your school doesn't have a PE program, they will most likely have sports. Some school sports are football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, ECT... Sports keep you active and movind around so they give you exercise. So, whether you spiking a volleyball or shooting some hoops, you are staying active.
