Freedom of speech is a privilege in many countries, there are still plenty of countries around the world that do not have nearly as many rights as the United States. Freedom of speech gives people The right to free speech, which is one of the most precious rights an individual has as a citizen of the United States of America. This right gives people the opportunity to speak their mind and give their opinions of what they think should happen. The first amendment, the right of freedom of speech is one of the most important classic fantasy to almost anyone living in the United States, building the foundation of our nation. This right gives us plenty of different opportunities to express our opinions and political viewpoints on any issues in America. But it comes with a price, people have been protesting multiple different events trying to prevent people from expressing opposing opinions or political viewpoints on that has issues in America. For the minority of people, expressing a different opinion should be protected no matter how controversial or insensitive it may be.

After reading the transcript of the speech, “The Spirit of Liberty”, given by federal judge for more than 50 years, Learned Hand, who served most of the time on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York, my idea of what it means to be an American was slightly shifted. The statement made by Hand which really caught my attention was, “What do we mean when we say that first of all we seek liberty? I often wonder whether we do not rest our hopes too much upon constitutions, upon laws and upon courts. These are false hopes.” I agree with Hand in the sense that the constitution can only serve purpose to our country if we, as Americans, learn to be truly accepting.

An important thing to know about freedom of speech is it does not actually protect anything we want to say. However freedom of speech is something that the United States holds high. The first amendment of our constitution is one of the most important amendments we have to protect us. The first amendment gives us the right to free speech with very few limits. Even though this may not be the best policy it is important we protect any speech so long as it is not harming anyone. The constitution says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (Madison)” This is saying that the freedom of speech is protected by the constitution and congress cannot make laws to limit anything covered by freedom

Free speech is the backbone that holds democracy together.  Without a free speech, ideas would not be challenged, governments would not be kept in check, and citizens would not be free.  John Stuart Mill said once that, “If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person then he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.”( Roleff, 21). The right to free speech is essential to “egalitarian democracy,”(Tsesis) however, this right is not absolute and must be limited in certain situations.

People should have the right to express their thoughts due to the first amendment; we are not a third world country. This is America, not north Korea. We have the first amendment for freedom. This is a great amendment; without it we would not be free in the land of the free. Anything else would limit our freedom.

The founding fathers of this nation didn’t always have this luxury of right. In the colonial era freedom of speech was a notable freedom granted that many nations didn’t have at that time. With Europe in the struggle for dominance and absolutism being overthrown with democracy, the populous struggled to have their voice heard. The masses was censored in many cases with the threat of death or imprisonment. In the United States, it was an inalienable right to be heard and offer differences of opinion. People have a right to say whatever they want to say. No one has the right to stop them. We may not like some of the opinions people have, or the words that they use, but this is no reason to have the government take away people's natural right to speak. Voting is one example to show a way we can benefit from free speech.Voting, is a way that Americans and other countries use free speech to decide who would make a good president for there country. If they did not us free speech the country would not know who to chooses or even they would chooses someone who the country did not want. This example shows the importance of free speech some country use for there gouvernement.

Freedom of speech in America is defined by the right to express any opinions without any censorship or restraint. But it isn’t just defined by the words people speak aloud. It’s the actions they take part in to support the words they express. The writing of books and essays, creating artwork, giving speeches to grand crowds, voting, protesting. But do all people have the right to speak their mind? Should people be able to speak freely, to express opinions and thoughts, as promised in the United States constitution? Like most democratic nations in the world, the United States has had its own fair share of issues with hate speech. There has been a lot of controversy over whether hate speech should be regulated. In analyzing the concept of free speech, one cannot ignore that it does not occur in a vacuum. There have been all types of debasements ranging from ethnic, religious, racial and gendered stereotyping. Freedom of speech inherently includes all other fundamental human rights. Hence, as acknowledged through natural rights, other rights and personhood should adamantly be included within this scope of this protection. The First Amendment states that we have the right to Freedom of Speech. Many people argue whether we actually still have that right. With all of the new laws and rules everywhere you go, it can be hard to show and say who you really are and what you really feel. Even though the consequences can sometimes be harsh, we have a freedom of speech because we can pretty much always share our opinions even if there are consequences and we have social media.

America's greatest gift to our generation is freedom of speech. But do we take it for granted? We do not truly realize how lucky we are to have freedoms of speech. We can say whatever we want when we want. Back then when there was still slavery if you spoke out against the government you would be arrested.

Saying what you think shows the kind of person you are. Along with that the freedom of speech allows you to be able to hear a variety of views on different topics. Expressing yourself shouldn't have any penalties because everyone has their own opinions and they should be heard. When stating your views on a political topic you could be hauled to jail if we didn’t have the freedom of speech. Although still limited if voicing threats we can still speak our mind. A quote from Voltaire says, “I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will fight to the death for your right to be able to say it.” Even if what someone saying is outrageous they should not be forced to pay a fine or have jail-time.
