The Reign of Terror was a period in the revolution that was the most impacting on the French. When the author of the source explains how the people were terrorized “We could see very few people…that would lead to being arrested again” (doc. 6). It affected the people because they were terrified of leaving their homes and being sent to the guillotine. They lived in agony and isolation because they were always hiding for the fear they had towards the government. The citizens would not socialize, and they were always conscious that anything could happen at any moment. Another impact it had on the people of France were the reforms that the National Assembly made during the French Revolution that specified the citizen’s rights: “Liberty consists… of society the enjoyment of these same rights.” (doc. 5). When the National Assembly created the Declaration of the Rights of Man, they mentioned that all men had natural rights. The reform benefitted the men but not the women. The women were the most affected by this reform that occurred during the French Revolution that eventually caused a woman named Olympe de Gouges to write about these inequalities. Another example of the French Revolution not embodying Enlightenment principles is by denying the citizens the right to overthrow the government with the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror was a period from 1793-1794, and during that period of time, “the committee often had these “enemies” tried in the morning and guillotined in the afternoon...The “enemies of the Revolution”...were fellow radicals who challenged his (Robespierre) leadership...Thousands of unknown people also were sent to their deaths, often on the flimsiest of charges. For example, an 18-year-old youth was sentenced to die for cutting down a tree that had been planted as a symbol of liberty” (Modern World History textbook, pages 226-227). This horrendous act of mass murder during the French Revolution was caused

Before the French Revolution, France was ruled and governed by the king, his Grand Council of ministers, and 13 courts called parliaments. King Louis XVI ruled by “divine right,” believing that he had been put on the throne by the grace of God. France then was one of the most powerful and wealthiest countries, and had a strong army, and even stronger cultural influence. (Plain, 5) Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette were shielded from the daily lives of the ordinary people in France. When Louis XVI inherited the throne in 1774, he also inherited many problems left behind by the previous king, King Louis XV. The country had been involved in the Seven Years War, also known as the French and Indian War, and was left with many debts of the
Revolutions have been a central part to change throughout the world. Factors leading to a revolution often include built up anger from citizens and a lack of respect for an action or fundamental part of government. Although the citizens often orchestrate the revolution, the government is the actual cause.
