Homo sapiens, living in mass communication world, are highly influenced by major media sources which include, music and lyric, conversation and community engagement. (Clash p xi- xxi) Musical impact is the first identifiable element that culture clash talks about. More importantly, the new style he created bring him extra credit among his peers. Eddie dreamed to be idol beyond the basketball fan. That one fits to interdependent selves categories very well. From the season Episode 15, Eddie Huang used the radio record and remix in R&B to express emotion to his peers. That one even becomes his own identity. As an teen age boy, Eddie produces more than young boy could do. He used his own cultural understanding to communication with people surround. Instead of oral language, the music become the platform for his “two selves”. In episodes 14, when Emily Huang was found by the best tennis coach as natural tennis players’s potential, and the Even Huang was selected as the youngest personal checking account owner, the comedy used a different way to illustrate the characteristics of Asian Immigrants’ value. The idea of “Born to be” has been widely spread to all generation of immigrant through all mass media channels. Totes that parents give to kids likewise send a message for what those children belong and how they should follow what they are learning from the TV shows and acting as their
This also shows that he believes he should not acknowledge the national anthem, as it is not his own culture’s ‘corroboree’. The camera angle and Eddie’s dialogue is used in this episode to challenge the values of society by highlighting the characters’ beliefs.
Eddie’s journey begins with a passion to read books and write poems. When Eddie first opened up about this to his girlfriend Lupe, “then [she] told [him he] should be a writer” (Johnson 76). Lupe is the root of his love for literature. However, he cannot let his reputation - which
Eddie’s father influenced Eddie to be the chaperone in the family despite his age. At an early age he felt as though he had a financial responsibility, which influenced him to get a job as both a shoe-shiner and a paperboy. He describes his family’s structure as the father being the head of the family, and the mother as the heart. This helped create a balance within the family, but caused tension between Eddie and his father’s expectations. Eddie experienced two spheres of education, American school and Chinese school. “I loved going to American school, but Chinese school was another matter.” (Yung 25) He disliked the limited exposure of Chinese education, and felt that he had been exposed to a wider world in American school, which eventually led him to flunk out of school. This came as a disappointment to Eddie’s father, and added immense pressure to Eddie. The confinement he felt in Chinatown frustrated him, his overprotective mother crippled his adventurous-ambition and the pressure added by his father to lead the family caused him to runaway when at the age of 13. He
The relatable situations, along with the Huang family’s somewhat outrageous reactions to them are pure entertainment in my eyes. The premise of the show is very similar to the shows “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “Diff’rent Strokes”, showing how people react to a culture different from their own. Looking into this show, I would suggest you judge it by how well it avoids focusing on stereotypes, allowing each character to be utterly unique. Also, seeing how realistically the interactions are presented to the audience makes up the entire show, it’s something that should be focused on. The originality of the work is… mediocre. As mentioned before, “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “Diff’rent Strokes” are very similar to “Fresh Off the Boat” in terms of story. The concept is used enough, along with the classic ‘I’ll become just like the new people that surround me!’ character. But, “Fresh Off the Boat” can definitely take the concept to the next level, if it plays out
Making a name for oneself and starting a family is difficult, but it is even more arduous when it is in a completely new country with citizens who judge newcomers based on racial differences. In the face of such adversity, Joseph and Mary Tape swiftly assimilated themselves and their family into American society; in a time of intense political tension for Chinese immigration, they utilized their abilities to survive. By embracing their assimilation and connecting into their ever expanding prestige as middle-class Chinese Americans, the Tapes were able to act as ethnic and cultural brokers between the Chinese and American society. Though the Tapes were “at once powerful and marginal” as brokers, their unique social standing and abilities
The author wrote about Eddie who has been having it rough lately. He tried to make the best out of his situation living under the circumstances that he does. His family keeps pressuring into avenging his cousin's death. But he still manages to keep his head held high although it seemed like the entire world was against him. He avoids getting into trouble or doing drugs because he knows that he wants a good future and doing those things would not help. He keeps his head down and works for his dollar no matter how hard it can get for him.
Eddie at the beginning of the story was hopeful that his career would succeed.Everything started going well for him, people said he played from the heart. He was starting to show that he had money, he got a leather jacket and and wore a chain. He made 1 record that went to the charts. When he went to hollywood he met a girl immediately and moved in with her. Not only that she taught him how to play the guitar which started his music career.Eddie started to become successful however when the A&R man told him that he doesn't hear a single. His music career was basically over, he had no idea what to do, he was confused. He was lost, he had no career when his A&R man fired him, he is “a rebel without a
Eddie was born in Washington D.C, the son of two immigrants, making him a second generation immigrant. This effects his self-identity because he is different. He grew up in a different culture than most kids. This came apparent to him early on. Eddie’s food at lunch was different than the “average” lunch. He had food that was traditional to his culture, but it did not smell good. The other kids made fun of Eddie, “It was embarrassing, so I asked Mom to start packing me some white people food.” He was aware that he came from a different background than most kids, and that is was because of his parents being first generation immigrants, making him second.
The focus of our group project is on Chinese Americans. We studied various aspects of their lives and the preservation of their culture in America. The Chinese American population is continually growing. In fact, in 1990, they were the largest group of Asians in the United States (Min 58). But living in America and adjusting to a new way of life is not easy. Many Chinese Americans have faced and continue to face much conflict between their Chinese and American identities. But many times, as they adapt to this new life, they are also able to preserve their Chinese culture and identity through various ways. We studied these things through the viewing of a movie called Joy Luck Club,
In the song Given To Fly Eddie says "He got up out of there, ran for hundreds of miles / He made it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree / The wind rose up, set him down on his knee." In this verse Eddie is describing his life and how he needs to get away from it all and just have a peaceful break, alone. Vedder likes to use his life in third person in most of his songs to make his message more distant, and almost more easily relatable. The song Given To Fly is actually a second or a reference to the song Going to California By Led Zeppelin and how just leaving might help out more than anything. Throughout the album there are several different songs with an abundance of different meanings. The song, Alive, has one of the deepest messages that is tied to his life personally. The song is about a boy that finds out that who he thought was his father, is actually his stepfather and his real father is dead. Eddie said “the song is a work of fiction based on reality (SK)”. When Vedder was born his mom had left his father and
Elizabeth Wong is a Chinese-American playwright who wrote “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl”. In her essay, she describes her resentment of her Chinese roots and her protest against her parents who want her to learn and appreciate her heritage and culture. Her essay exposes the pressure that society places on immigrant children to fit into the dominant culture. The proposed solutions to fixing this problem is thinking and implementing long term plans. I make the argument that his ethical problem of society placing such a heavy burden on immigrant children to fit into the dominate culture can be solved with the implementation of multicultural classes, language classes, additional counselors and child psychologists in public schools.
Eddie is introduced as a moral man with ethics and principles. Miller showed that at the beginning of the play, Eddie tells the story of a young boy who ratted on immigrant relatives staying in his home and warn Catherine that she must be absolutely silent about Marco and Rodolpho. Moreover, there was a discussion between Eddie and Beatrice; where Beatrice is afraid of her immigrant cousins being caught. Therefore, Eddie told her: “listen if everybody keeps his mouth shut, nothing can happen. They’ll pay for their board.”(Miller, 1955, p.9).Later in the story, Eddie revealed a different identity .He was blinded with passion to the point of immorality. When he knew about Catherine falling in love with Rodolpho, he told Alfieri that he is going to call the immigration so he can keep Catherine just for him. Even though he knew that he is going to suffer for calling immigration, but does so anyway .Eddie: “Give me the number if the Immigration Bureau.”(Miller, 1955, p.61).To sum up, Miller displayed identity that could be moral with ethics and turns to be and identity that is blinded with
This soundtrack emulates Ed’s elation since he knows he will still be alive despite his arterial disease. After the kiss, Ed makes a sarcastic remark saying “Here we are again, male school mom”. This is a huge tension that arises in Ed’s character. In making this statement, Ed is essentially realizing his lack of power in the hands of his spouse, his job and ultimately his life. He probably noticed this idea since he had such a close brush with death.
can see the type of man Eddie is, as when he meets the brothers for
In addition to the cultural conflicts and confusions with Chinese immigrants ethnic heritage , Amy also portrays how television shows during this era of American culture influences conflicts and confusions in the Chinese immigrant communities. In her attempt to
