Although one may state that Juliet should be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and herself due to her rash and impatient personality, the person most responsible for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is the impulsive mediator, Friar Lawrence, because he arranges Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage and gives Juliet a potion that makes her appear dead without informing Romeo beforehand. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because of his impulsive decision to arrange a secret marriage between Romeo and Juliet which is hidden from the rest of the Montague and Capulet family members. Friar Lawrence simply assumed that the alliance may “prove to turn [Romeo and Juliet’s] households’ rancor to pure love.” Friar Lawrence only thought of one of the outcomes, that the two households hate for each other would be fixed, and was very impulsive, as he acted without thinking. This impulsive personality of Friar Lawrence led the Montagues to try to get Juliet married to Paris, a handsome, dignified man as soon as possible, which led to an execution of a secret plan and later on, Romeo’ and Juliet’s deaths.
