Friar Lawrence's Role In Romeo And Juliet

Sometimes stars are the deciders, and once they have made a decision, it is inevitable. In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, as a priest and friend of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence occupied a really unique position. He represented the two protagonists’ interests, and saw their union as a way to reconcile the two families that hold intense hatred towards each other. He valued moderation and was always ready with a plan. Unfortunately, although all his plans seemed well conceived and well intentioned they served as a catalyst to the star-crossed relationship and tragedy that dominate the play. Misfortune and fate were significant themes that contributed to the ruin of his plan and that led to the unavoidable outcome of catastrophe and death, as untimeliness and troubles kept getting on his way. It fulfilled many significant roles such as foreshadowing certain events to the audience. Most importantly, it’s Friar’s diverse characteristics that enabled him to precipitate many of the major plots of the story. For instance, with Friar’s scheming and tactical mind. It is what led to the plan of marrying the two heartfelt lovers, which was the catalyst of the fated star-crossed relationship and tragedy of the play. Further, with the complex personality and ups and downs of emotions Friar possessed, he was definitely a well-rounded character, whom also underwent development, as the play gets unfolded. As a character, Friar can provide us, the readers, with many useful lessons. One of the most valuable lessons we can benefit from him has to be that as human beings failure is an unavoidable experience. Certain times, no matter how tactical and hardworking you are, destiny would just be against you. As a side character with such strong impact and message, Friar is undoubtedly one of the few really unique Shakespearean characters that modern plays adapt
