Sentence Spinning / Rewriting Types
A good spun article possesses a natural, diverse mix of sentence types. All 10 types should occur with equal frequency throughout the document.
Below are the basic types, with a couple examples for each.
1. Simple sentence rewrites * “I always take my dog out after work.” * “My dog needs to go out every single evening after work.”
2. Compound sentence rewrites (comma + conjunction or occasional semicolon) * “I take my dog for a walk an hour after work, andboy does he love it!” * “My dog Max is my best friend; we go for walks every evening.”
3. Complex sentence rewrites (dependent clause(s) + independent clause(s)) * “When I get home from work, I usually take my dog for a walk outside.” * “Although Max’s high energy level is one of my favorite things about him, it means he needs to go for a walk every single night.”
4. Two sentence rewrites (any combo of simple, compound, and complex) * “I’m pretty exhausted after a long day from work. But when I get home, I see my dog Max waiting, and I realize that he needs to go for a walk.” * “Dogs can sense many things, but apparently not energy levels. Max is just as excited to go out when I come home stressed out and tired as he is when I come home excited and happy.”

Friendship is a key aspect of life. Friends are your support system, who you go to in time of need, and who you share memories with that can last a lifetime. In today’s society, many friendships are broken up because of trust issues or the lack of positivity that may be spread through the group.

The types of sentences this chapter talks about includes, simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, periodic sentences, and cumulative sentences. Cumulative sentences are sentences where the main point comes first and more details get added on after the main point. Cumulative sentences can go to hundreds of words (Finn and Weinstein 70). Complex sentences is when a main action gets a dependent clause added on to it (Finn and Weinstein 69). A periodic sentence is a complex sentence that saves the main point for the end of the sentence (Finn and Weinstein 70). Simple sentences are when a writer only writes about a main action. A compound sentence is when a sentence has two or more main actions (Finn and Weinstein 69).

Friendship is not simply a "relationship", knowing someone, conversing with that person, or dealing with that person in business, school, or in casual acquaintance. True friendship is not just a "relationship", but self-sacrificing love. A friend is also one who supports, sympathizes, and is a person in whom you can confide. I have a positive attitude toward writing in English. When I first came to the United States, I was very confused about using English, a new and strange language. When I go walk outside, it gets cold and darkish, and if I stay out too long my legs go numb.
Finally, on the syntactic level advertising texts are usually simple in structure. Everyday sentences/phrases, imperative sentences, questions, tense, idioms or proverbs, ellipsis, parallelism, repetition (anaphora, epiphora) are used at the syntactic level.(

Let’s look at some other ways to rearrange simple sentence beginnings (e.g. common noun-verb constructions) and add some variety to our work. Remember, our goal here is not only to minimize the use of simple sentence openings - it’s to become better writers!
