Frozen Heart of Dread is a novel written by Melissa De La Cruz. It is set in a post-apocalyptic, frozen earth. Nat is a “Marked” which means she has weird looking eyes, a voice in her head and weird powers. The voice in Nat’s head tells her to go find “The Blue” which is the only place on earth which isn’t entirely frozen over. Because that’s exactly how physics works. One day she escapes from some sort of prison or hospital. They really don’t clarify this at all. She goes to Las Vegas to become a Blackjack dealer. The world is frozen after some sort of apocalypse and as a result everybody is poor and starving, but they can still afford fuel for cars and even gambling. The plot really begins to pick up once they head out to the frozen sea, but I was let down very quickly. There was a cool twist about a protection spell that goes wrong but that is almost immediately ruined. Another issue I found with this book is the characters. Everyone is this book is boring. I felt as though they have no real direction, apart from Nat going to the blue because the voice in her head says so. Which was weird to me. Everyone else just wanders around doing whatever the plot demands of them. Whether it be racing cars, jumping out of buildings, or standing completely still while a polar bear charges at them, which seems entirely logical. And the exciting, exhilarating death race starring Wes lasts three paragraphs. That really showed me how much of an adrenaline junkie Wes is. And on top of that Wes and Nat have an incredibly strange and almost cringe-worthy flirting thing going on for almost the entire novel. The worst part is that it’s completely forced and awkward. It felt super cringe-worthy and I just didn’t like it at all. They could have had a sweet little romance but I felt as though De La Cruz did it just to tick a box. “Careful, you might change your mind about that once you get to know me.” Says Wes. “Doubt it,” she said even as her cheeks flushed a little. This is the second time they’ve ever spoken so why are they flirting? Why are they all of a sudden the dullest true love ever? This annoyed me because their “true love” comes through as
