G Zaroff's Survival

General Zaroff is becoming like an animal because he is beginning to look and act like an animal. When Rainsford was swept on the island he met a man that seemed normal but the more time that he spent there the more he realised that there was something off about him. His eyes ,too, were black and very bright(Connell,pg.4). Zaroff's eyes are becoming less human like and more animal like because he is becoming more dangerous. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford is shown as brave, intelligent, and worldly. Rainsford is shown to be brave in the story when he jumps off a cliff. “Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Rainsford is not a hero due to his egocentric attitude and hypocritical behavior. After Rainsford hears the hounds and sees Ivan and General Zaroff approaching, he then creates a trap to kill General Zaroff. When Rainsford hears the footsteps stop, he looks back at the trap and “[sees] in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not wholly failed” (Conell 14). This quote proves that Rainsford does not obtain the qualities of an altruistic and civil being. This is due to Rainsford wanting to kill General Zaroff for his own survival. Furthermore, once Rainsford accidentally kills Ivan, he swims away in refuge from General Zaroff.

The word survivor is sometimes referred to as someone who has survived a sickness. Survivors are also individuals who have overcome difficult times. The world survivor picks up different definitions every time someone overcomes something. Anyone can be a survivor.

     Rainsford is certainly a brave character. ‘“Hunting, Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (110). Rainsford is composed until he figures out that Zaroff’s new species is human beings. Rainsford has just met this man, doesn’t know where he is or anything about those people but he still puts his foot down. Rainsford knew it was murder, and so did Zaroff, but it was brave for Rainsford to tell him he would not keep a secret of what Zaroff was doing and Rainsford demanded to be taken home immediately. Rainsford was brave to tell Zaroff, straight forward, that he would not participate in his game. ‘“Ivan,” he said to Rainsford, “will supply you with hunting clothes, food, and a knife”’ (170). Rainsford was now in the game and had to participate. His bravery came out when a three day duel was forced against his will.

First, rainsford is adventurous man because when he was in the forest getting chased by zaroff. “Whenever rainsford gets to go own a hunting trip he goes to some other place to hunt and that is why he is adventurous( page 1,2).” Rainsford was adventurous because of all of the things he was able to do and survive. Rainsford is Adventurous because he is able to survive and stay away from zaroff. Many hurdles can come at someone in today's world, many of these challenges can be frustrating. A true survivor is extremely motivated, towards anything that comes at them. To be able to survive, one must be able to work hard to shut down their fears.

Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. For instance General Zaroff said “Your brain against mine, Your woodcraft against mine.” (Connell 6). This shows that General Zaroff gives right to rainsford to try and outsmart him and try to win by surviving. If rainsford outsmarts him then he will get the victory or he can do what Zaroff wanted to do to him which was kill him. Also Rainsford disagreed when Zaroff told him about the hunting game. “No,General,”he said “I will not hunt.” Then Zaroff basically said he had to or ivan will kill him.(Connell 9).This quote means that Rainsford did not like the idea that he had to stay in a jungle and

The first trait of a true survivor that Rainsford and Katniss both possess is that they both choose intelligence over strength in order to win their “game”. This is proved by Rainsford and Katniss when rainsford eludes General Zaroff, when Katniss drops the tracker jackers onto the other contestants, and when Katniss blows up the pile of supplies. The first example is when Rainsford eludes General Zaroff. Even when General Zaroff has his companion Ivan and a pack of dogs, Rainsford still eludes Zaroff. He went through a traumatizing thing but he still stayed strong. He never quit. He persevered and stayed strong. He found a way to calm himself down. He calms himself down by promising to never touch a gun again. And when he found out he killed his brother he showed determination by promising not to touch a gun. And he also showed enthusiasm, because he really felt like that decision to not touch a gun was the right thing. So he had passion for what he was doing. He supported himself and that is how he got through his adversity. In “The Most Dangerous Game” it states that, “Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable. For a moment he stood there, thinking. An idea that held a wild chance came to him, and, tightening his belt, he headed away from the swamp” (Connell 21). It also says “They would be on him any minute now. His mind worked frantically. He thought of a native trick he had learned in Uganda. He slid down the tree. He caught hold of a springy young sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife, with the blade pointing down the trail; with a bit of wild grapevine he tied back the sapling. Then he ran for his life. The hounds raised their voices as they hit the fresh scent. Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay feels. He had to stop to get his breath. Survival is living on the hope that better things are yet to come in your life. Right now in our country people survive because of hope and the belief that people are good and they will help them out. People survive when they are homeless on the streets only because of the people who are good at heart and give them food or money to buy clothing for the winter. Gerta survived because of her family and friends. Anne Frank survived because she believed that “Despite all the evil going on in the world I still believe that all people are good at heart.”

Ever got stuck or even lost and had no other choice but to take the decision to survive on your own? Or ever had to survive in a harsh environment, climate, or condition? In the novel “A Long Walk To Water” by author, Linda Sue Park, survival played a big role as the main goal for the protagonists. According to Merriam-Webster.com, the definition of survivor is “To remain alive or in existence: to live on.” From my point of view, the meaning of survivor is being an individual who faced the struggles of danger and manage to survive and overcome them.
