Do you feel that Garp made the right decision in attending his mother’s memorial service? Do you agree with the compromises he made in order to attend? In what ways was his attendance at the memorial a cathartic experience? How did his life change after that?
Jenny was all Garp had for a very long time, he did not have a father growing up - he only had Jenny. The two were as close as a mother and son could be and they did have a strange relationship. When Jenny was killed it was hard for Garp in the sense that it was his mother, even though she was very busy with her feminist stuff and the two drifted they still had a very strong mother - son bond. In my opinion I do believe Garp made the right decision to attend his mother’s memorial service, it was unfair that he could not attend because he was a male. That was his mother and he was her only

Even though he was attacked and people made it clear he was not welcomed to stay for the rest of the memorial he and the women let a lot of emotions out about the way they felt with the situation. Some of the women agreed he should have stayed because that was his mother and she was just as much his as theirs. Some of the women were completely against it because he was a man, and it was a feminist memorial and they claimed it was for them not him, They all released any emotion they were feeling at the moment, it was in a way good for all of them to have that kind of release. I do not however agree with all of the compromises he had to make just to attend the funeral. It was not fair to Garp to have to completely reinvent himself just to attend his only parents funeral. He had a new outlook on his mother’s followers and he had a different kind of respect for them in a way. Although he still hated the Ellen Jamesians and he did not think what his mother’s followers were wrong he did have a separate kind of respect for
Lee Papageorge was one of the few that could deservedly be called a stand up guy. He was one of the few adored by everyone that knew him. It’s heartbreaking to have lost someone with so much kindness and goodwill. He never varied in his benevolence, and Westport is all the better for it. I was one of the fortunate ones on the receiving end of Lee’s gentle compassion early in my life, and I am the better for it. My heart goes out to Mary Jo, Ali, and Melissa.
Gun shots, car alarms, sirens from police cars or ambulances, and hustlers and gangsters yelling under my window are what I remember hearing every night growing up in Washington, D.C. Trying to raise a young male was hard, especially coming from the 8th ward projects of Green Valley Avenue. My father, Gary W. Hodnett Sr., was able to raise five children with all of these negative distractions that our community dealt him. He is the most significant person in my life, and I admire him so much. He has taught me so much about becoming a man and raising a family. I think my father was a fantastic provider, a great teacher, and a wonderful spiritual leaders and I wouldn’t change nothing about him.
One of the ways Gatsby liked to show off was with his incredible parties he held at his mansion. Many people came, most of them uninvited to the party, unlike Nick. Most of the people that came to Gatsby's party were rich, famous, and only cared about themselves. These people came to Gatsby's parties without even knowing who Gatsby is, but the fact was that they didn't care to know who Gatsby is. After Wilson's wife, Mrytle dies because she is hit by Gatsby's car, Wilson shoots Gatsby and now Gatsby is pronounced dead. The irony of his death was that at his funeral, only three attended. Nick, Owl Eyes, Henry Gatz, and a few of his servants attended his funeral. Looking at the people that came to his
however, not a single person consented to pay a visit to the funeral of a man who once threw a series of extravagant parties which every socialites of New York attended. Gatsby was once one of the most well known individual in the city due to the parties he threw for Daisy’s attention, however his neglect in his own social life and friendship resulted in no one except Nick and few insignificant individuals attending his funeral. The Tragedy in this is that Gatsby was neglected by Daisy, who he chased for his lifetime, and also had nobody mourning for his sudden death. In the novel, Fitzgerald describes the funeral, “The minister glance several times at is watch, so I took him aside and asked him to wait for an hour. But it wasn’t any use. Nobody came.” (174) Gatsby’s never ending effort to reclaim daisy nor his large parties created any individuals that even remotely cared for Gatsby’s unfortunate death. It is evident that Gatsby was leading himself to the path of arrogance, ignorance, and vanity, guided by his obsession over his old love, Daisy. Although some, such as Jordan, showed interest in the mysterious identity of Gatsby, his complete lack of social skills and common sense, all fueled by Gatsby’s unrequited chase for Daisy, led to the utter indifference of his acquaintances when they received the news of Gatsby’s death. Using this
it was saddening when only a couple of individuals attend his funeral. No one else came to the funeral for several reasons. Gatsby's business partner, Wolfsheim, did not come because he was a gangster and prefer not to be seen as an associate of Gatsby. Tom and Daisy did not come because they had left town to avoid any investigation into Myrtle Wilson's death and Gatsby's death. The hundreds of people who came to Gatsby's parties did not come because they were using him for their wealth.
Ever since Gatsby met Daisy 5 years ago in Louisville, he has been trying to earn her back. His first attempt at this is when he convinces Nick to “Invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let [Gatsby] come over”. Fitzgerald is trying to set up the book for the let down that is inevitable, he wants the readers hopes up before he ends them all. As the story advances the readers sees signs of Daisy choosing Tom over Gatsby. But the reader really understands it when “Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the kitchen table, with a plate of cold fried chicken between them” (144-145). This is a pivotal moment in the story because it's obvious she chooses Tom over Gatsby by the way she is so compliant towards Tom. This moment makes the novel a tragedy because Gatsby has had one single mission: to get Daisy back. With this moment the reader knows it will never happen. An additional somber moment that happens to Gatsby is the attendance to his funeral. After Gatsby is killed by George, Nick plans a funeral. But the sad truth is all of Gatsby's “friends” could not attend. His so called “best-friend” Meyer Wolfsheim was one who could not attend the funeral because he could not “get mixed up in it” (171). With no one attending Gatsby's funeral the reader feels remorse for Gatsby. Fitzgerald does this to further illustrate the tragic backbone of the The Great Gatsby. With many awful
Richard Earl Gaither is a family oriented man that lived a fulfilled life from February second, 1934 to September sixteenth, 2014. He had seven children, many grandchildren, quite a few great grandchildren (that’s me), and even some children he raised as his own. My mother, Brandi, is his grandchild yet he took her in when she was born up until she was 8 and continued to be the main parental figure in her life up until the day he died. Her mother Linda was a drug addict and chose the significant other she had that month over her own daughter and Brandi’s father did not want a part in the family so he stayed behind in New Hampshire where she was born. Richard gave Brandi a great life and everything she ever needed. I’ve grown up around my grandfather my whole life. He meant so much more to me than any family member normally does. I’ve learned to appreciate everything he has done for my family. Without him, I would not be here and neither would my brother and my two sisters. Respecting your elders is very important.
Gatsby was a person who was consumed with changing who he was and try to repeat the past when it came to his love life. Gatsby felt he could change the past, I feel he had the God complex “He was a son of God—a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that—and he must be about His Father’s Business, the service of a vast, vulgar and meretricious beauty.” (Fitzgerald, 104) At a young age he felt he was meant for great things in life not being a son of a poor farm. Since he did once from being a poor farm boy to the money he has now. I also feel that since he resents
In the end, “ Nobody came” (Chapter 9) to Gatsby’s funeral. His was surrounded by people in life, with his wild parties, yet only three people came to lay him to rest. This shows how hollow Gatsby’s success truly was. He would have people over every weekend ever since Nick first heard of him, but he never truly connected with them. He never had the love and acceptance needed for a human to feel successful in life. These people didn’t care about their host, yet they felt perfectly okay calling at his funeral to say “What I called up about was a pair of shoes I left there.”(Chapter 9). Gatsby may have been successful in earning money, but as far as personal relationships go, he was
He was hard working, honest, and the smartest man I've ever met. In 94 years, i can assure you, he never broke a promise, never let someone down, and absolutely never disappointed his family name. Gramp excelled in an era in which nothing was done for you, there were no computers, and internet. An era in which you had to absorb, listen, and learn, something he was particularly good at. He was successful at everything, especially while at the helm of his trucking and logging company for over 50 years. One of the most demanding industries there is in our area, an industry that was constantly changing, and he never missed a beat. Gramp was always ahead of the curve, the best of the best, and a pioneer in his industry, and he took pride in that.
“An epilogue… is more than a body count. An epilogue, in the disguise of wrapping up the past, is really a way of warning us about the future”(469). At the end of the day you may know what you die from you may not. In this case many of the deaths in the epilogue of the World According to Garp were either natural, sudden or could have been prevented. Unfortunately Garps death was not an accident, it in fact was murder. A murder committed by Pooh Percy.
To add on, Pip feels guilty throughout the novel for leaving his family behind, but Gatsby does not mention anything. Pip realizes near the end of the novel that he turned his back on his family who raised him. Pip then requests Biddy and Joe to tell their children about how he loved them, and not to mention anything about how he turned his back on them, “Don’t tell him, Joe, that I was thankless; don’t tell him, Biddy that I was ungenerous and unjust; only tell him that I honored you both” (Dickens 548). Pip is regretting his decision of neglecting his family when he became a gentleman, even though; they always supported him when he was a gentleman, and even before that.
Both Gatsby and Fitzgerald rejected their parents, and in their own minds believe that they had a more fascinating lineage than what they truly had. Gatsby is another part of Fitzgerald both were ashamed of their backgrounds and their meager lineage. When studying at Princeton, Fitzgerald met Ginerva King, she was the woman he could never have, in his eyes that made her even more desirable (Bruccoli 54). This further demonstrates the similarities the Gatsby and Fitzgerald have. For example, Gatsby says, “It excited him that many men had already loved Daisy – it increased her value in his eyes” (Fitzgerald 149). Both Gatsby and Fitzgerald believed that the more sought after a woman was the more desirable she was in their eyes. Also, like Daisy, Ginerva King stopped correspondence with Fitzgerald, and would marry a man with more money that would support their lifestyles. Soon after ending the relationship with Ginerva, Fitzgerald would sign up for the war (Bruccoli 71). Though, unlike his famous literary character, Gatsby, he did not see any action nor did he obtain any medals of valor such as Gatsby, and as Gatsby is a representation of Fitzgerald the fact that Gatsby is an honored war hero means that Fitzgerald had regrets about his inability to take action in the war effort.
Some families do not have the most structured relationships, like Gatsby and his parents. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the main character Gatsby believed from a young age that he would would figure out a way to go from nothing to having everything. He was never close to them and did not believe that they were his actual parents, he believed that he was a child of god destined to do great things. The purpose of Gatsby’s family, or rather his father, is a great and significant one, he shows what his son truly was capable of. They were never close but he still appreciated what his son had accomplished. He knows that Gatsby was dedicated and was destined to do great things, he could also admire all of Gatsby, unlike others who just thought of him as some rich pompous man that threw lavish parties.
There are a lot of places where Gatsby could be considered a great man. In chapter three we find out that he throws parties for people he does not even know on a regular basis. He gives them food and wine and something that will make their
