The debate between whether gay marriage should be legalized or not has been a controversial topic recently. In the past twelve years, equal marriage rights have been legalized in 6 states of the U.S.. Eighteen states do not allow gay marriage and do not recognize civil unions. The other twenty six states allow civil unions, and some are debating legalizing gay marriage. Gay marriage should be legal across the United States.

United States is a country where every citizen has an equal right to be free and everyone is treated equal without looking at the race, gender, or the class of a citizen. Even though we live in a free country where everyone has equal rights, there is still a debate going on whether same-sex marriage should be allowed. Gay marriage has been an issue in the United States since the early 1970s. In the 1970 case of Baker v. Nelson, two men named Richard Baker and James McConnell were denied a marriage license by the Hennepin County District Court's clerk in Minnesota. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled the case in favor of the county clerk saying that the clerk has the right to decline a marriage license to gay couples. It seems that no one can come to a common agreement on the legitimacy of these topics. Personal characteristics, such as upbringing, culture, religion and ethnicity, all play a role in determining one's feelings on a given controversial issue. The Williams Institute at the UCLA school of Law estimates about 9 million americans identify as gay, bisexual, or transgender. The institute also found that bisexuals make up about 1.8% of the population, while 1.7% identify as gay. 0.7% of the population identify as transgender. Although only 37 states allow gay marriage, only one percent of gay couples were married in 2014. Same-sex marriage should be legalized in all states. The equality of all citizens did not exclude anyone identifying as gay, bisexual, or transgender. In the present time, marriage between two people of the same sex is legal in 37 states and the District of Columbia. During the course of the United States’ history, people have fought discrimination. People has battled to recognize equality for racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, and immigrants. As a result, denying some people, the option to marry due to their sexual orientation is discriminatory and creates the idea of a second of class citizens. One argument for gay marriage and the support of gay lifestyles is that homosexuals cannot help who they are since they were born that way. Homosexuality has been a sensitive topic and risen a lot of controversial opinions when some states approved same-sex marriage laws. Although same-sex marriage is against the traditional family structure previously established, many people think it has to be dealing with a more equal and integrating focus. Therefore, they think they should be accepted into society and treated with the same opportunities and rights. As a human, the individual seeks mostly the same goal, to build a family. And this goal is set regardless of gender, age, beliefs background and other factors. Since some states have qualified homosexual people to be merited with the same benefits as others; therefore, gay, and lesbian people look forward to having kids after they marry. Many psychologists, organizations, children, same-sex parents claim that children who are raised by gay or lesbian families, develop as well as those peers who are educated and grew up in a traditional family. I chose this topic because people should do what they want and marry who they want so they have the same rights as everybody else. There was 14 states that did not allow gay marriage before it was legalized but when the supreme court legalized it, they're forced to let them marry whoever they want. Gay marriage has tried to become legalized since the 1970s and in 2015 the supreme court legalized gay marriage. By the supreme court legalizing gay marriage it has affected less than 100 couples. Mayors in California and New York have defied their state laws and begun marrying gay couples. Federal lawmakers are debating whether to try to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as between a man and a woman and protect states from having to recognize gay couples married in states that allow gay marriage.

However, we as the people, need to come together and help them give that right back to homosexual couples so they could be able to marry and live freely with their spouse.
