Why is gay marriage such a big deal? Why are there so many people against it? Most of the time it is easy to presume where to draw the line when interfering with someone else’s rights. Simply, do not do it. Everyone has the right to get a driver’s license or has the freedom of speech, but why on earth do some people have the right to wed and think that he or she has the right to tell somebody else that he or she does not have that same right? Gay marriage is not traditional, gay relationships are immoral, and marriage is for procreation. Gay marriage is a perfectly acceptable decision that any citizen should be able to make for themselves.

When a married person dies, his or her spouse is considered the next of kin. This A homosexual's surviving partner does not have that right. Even in cases where wills are present, family members have sued for burial rights, property etc., on grounds of dementia or undue influence. This is the same policy at a hospital. A partner has no more importance regarding medical decisions than a total stranger.
Should gay marriages be legal? Clearly we as a nation are undecided on this issue. 36 states have passed legislation banning gay marriages, yet the state of Vermont passed a law that allows homosexual couples the right to participate in civil unions. Some other states are also debating whether or not to allow these couples to marry. Unfortunately, the dispute has left the United States homosexual community in an awkward position. There are some people who think that gay people have no rights and should never be allowed to marry. Other people believe that gay people are just like everyone else and should enjoy the same rights and privileges as heterosexuals do.
How does their sexuality determine what they are allowed to do? The same type of hypocritical view could be used against heterosexual couples adopting children from different countries. Not nearly as many people have an issue with this, yet there are even more possible negative outcomes with this scenario than there is with the homosexual marriage. What
Beyond wanting to uphold the legal principles of nondiscrimination and equal treatment, supporters say that there are very practical reasons behind the fight for marriage equity. They point out that homosexual couples who have been together for years often find themselves without the basic rights enjoyed by many heterosexual couples who legally marry- from the sharing of health and pension benefits to hospital visitation rights.
benefits of marriage. However, they argue that a gay partnership should not have the designation
Marriage between homosexual couples is just as normal as any other marriage. They may share a home, raise children, have careers, and go on vacation just like any other family might do. Two men being married is not harmful to society and it does not affect the lives of those surrounding them. People can
Lately there has been a great deal of discussion over legalising same sex marriage. To some people; there is no problem with it. However this is a controversial matter and there is still a great deal of debate ongoing in some countries, including this one, whether homosexual couples should continue to be denied the rights that straight couples enjoy. There is no reason why homosexuals relationships should be differentiated in any way from heterosexual ones. Homosexuality isn 't a choice. Any intolerance in our society concerning something someone cannot control, where no harm is caused, is not only ludicrous but also a form of discrimination. There is
The topic of homosexuality is one that makes conservatives and highly religious people shift in their seats. While a percentage of people believe being homosexual is a life choice and done for attention, science demonstrates the transparency in that argument. Sexual orientation is determined by immutable, natural factors such as genetics and hormones. Due to those immutable factors, those who are homosexual should be entitled to the same legal rights and protections as heterosexuals. If being gay is truly a choice, then people who attempt to change their orientation should be able to do so. But most people who are gay describe it as
Gay marriage has been a very controversial issue recently. The constitution does not say that gay marriage is legal or illegal. But, the constitutions does say in the 14th amendment that everyone is created equal. The constitution states that our rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If your pursuit of happiness is to marry the same gender then that is your right.
These of which are rights in health care and burial. If a spouse gets sick, it gives the other the right to make decisions on how to go forward with treatment when the spouse is unable to respond or choose on their own. Burial rights are rights that allow their significant other to have an input on burial arrangements. As well as when one of the two dies the other inherits belongings of deceased if that is his or her will (3). Now many same-sex couples aren't able to acquire these rights because they're aren't allowed to be married in some states and those states deny them marriage benefits as well. Like Tim and Keith, two married men in one state weren't considered married in the state they lived in which was PA. Keith died and Tim was denied the benefits of burial. The family ignored Keith's will and took most of the belongings that Keith owned by Tim. Being told by that the state that by law Tim wasn't married to Keith the family did as well, leaving Tim alone and ignored as if he wasn't part of Keith's family. And many are facing this today one of the many reasons to fight and achieve marriage
Gay marriage has been a controversial topic that is highly debated all around the globe, containing many of its own varying viewpoints and beliefs on both sides of the argument. Those who oppose same-sex marriage believe that it is a sacred bond that can only be kept sacred between a man and a woman, and that same-sex marriage will ruin the sanctity of marriage. Also, if gay marriage is allowed they believe that it will open the door to other non-traditional relationships to be accepted such as polygamy. Finally other key oppositions come from religious beliefs and standards. However the many that support gay marriage usually argue that everyone should have equal right to be in relationships with each other and receive the financial, emotional, and social benefits of marriage. I mean who really would be affected if same-sex marriage were to become legal? Nobody. If everyone feels that there is that special someone whom they are perfect for and will fall in love with, gay people would feel the same way. They deserve equal opportunity to not only find that perfect somebody but to be able to love them and get married. Leading to parenthood, and while gay couples are not able to have children on their own, that doesn’t mean they can’t adopt children off the street. However, several times have happened where a gay couple were put at the end of a waiting list or even denied completely just because of their sexual orientation. Other benefits to marriage are also tax breaks and
Since 1971 when the first same sex couple Richard John Baker and James Michael McConnell applied for a marriage license and were denied in the Baker vs. Nelson ruling, America has been forced to debate whether homosexuals should be allowed to be married even though they are not the classical definition of a couple. There are many opinions about this subject from government officials, religious leaders and even the president of the United States. Homosexuals should be allowed to be married because they need to be treated fairly and equally.
An ethical theory that helps to develop my stance on the topic would be Kantian ethics. Xunwu Chen states in his abstract of his article, “Law, Humanity, And Reason: The Chinese Debate, The Habermasian Approach, And A Kantian Outcome”, that according to Kant, “law must always treat humanity as a purpose, not as a tool to other ends, functioning to build a community of humanity” (Chen, pg. 100). Kant believes that law or the government or even society should not do things that will destroy humanity. In this case homosexuals and same-sex marriages are shunned and considered unethical and immoral which causes a strain on humanity. We should treat humanity the same way that we would want to be treated in the end. In his article, “On a Supposed Right to Deny Same-Sex Couples the Right to Marriage: The Categorical Imperative and Dignity for All”, Eric Athamatten states that Kant “provide us with other tools for supporting same-sex marriage that “rise above” the contingency of culture or sentiment, thus providing a truly rational, universal, and “enlightened”… understanding of same-sex marriage” (Athamatten, pg. 1). According to Kant, we do not need the government, the Holy Book, or even God to tell us what is right or wrong. An individual should be able to decide for himself whether or not something that they are doing is wrong. The decision for homosexuals to get
We are all created equal and should be treated as such. Therefore, it is not okay for someone to discriminate against someone who is a homosexual – just as those of a different race or ethnicity should not be discriminated against. We are all human beings and should be treated with respect and dignity. While race or ethnicity is not a choice, some may argue homosexuality is also not a choice and those who disagree have a right to voice their disagreement within a manner that does not
This is blatant discrimination against people of different sexual orientation. This is only one example of how the government’s refusal to recognize same-sex ( homosexuals ) marriages denies homosexuals rights that are supposedly protected by the state.
2011). The issue of gay is at the heart of the human struggle. The decision of two “consenting adults to engage in marital affair should be a personal decision and not the decision of the state” (Osbong, Tony 2014). Unlike race, gender, age, ethnicity our religion, sexual orientation is not a protected characteristic under federal civil rights law.
Today many people have their own opinions and beliefs when it comes down to the topic of gay marriage. I personally feel that gay marriage should be legalized. Yes God said, “That marriage is to be between a man and a woman.” My question is, “What gives people the right to judge or tell another human-being who to love or how to love?” I personally feel it’s insulting to one’s integrity and people should be able to express their love how they see fit.
The number one reason that heterosexuals marry is not to establish legal status, allow joint filing of taxes, or protect each other in medical decision-making. They marry because it is the ultimate expression of a person's love for another. Marriage is a commitment that says "I love you so much that I want to live the rest of my life with you. I want to share the ups and downs, forsake all others, and be together until death do us part." Should it matter that the couple doesn't fit into what society is used to? What matters is that they love each other. Some people talk about living wills and other legal contracts that can give homosexuals essentially the same rights as a married couple. If that is the case, why don't all heterosexual couples use these legal maneuvers instead of marriage? Just maybe there's something more to it. This whole act denies them their right to show affection and denies them religious freedom.
