In recent years, the debate over same-sex marriage has grown into a nationwide controversy, reverberating into the halls of congress, at the white house, in dozens of state and legislature and courtrooms, and in the rhetoric of election campaigns at both the national and state levels. As the debate rages on, the American religious community remains deeply divided over the issue, and over the morality of homosexuality. The debate has grown from an issue that occasionally arose in a few states to a national and even worldwide controversy.

On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Many conservative groups do NOT agree with this decision. The gay marriage debate has been simmering for as long as I can remember. The four articles I have selected give information from four different perspectives including that of liberals, conservatives, homosexuals, and orthodox Jews. With so many differing opinions, one can understand why it's been so hard for the nation to come to agree on this issue.

Sheldon claims that ‘homosexual marriage is neither culturally nor physiologically possible’ (p. 1). He sustains that ‘without the cooperation of a third party, the homosexual marriage is a dead-end street - referring to the reproductive aspect of marriage (p. 1).

In the article “Same-sex marriage protects Families and Children in Many Way” the author points out that “Parenting by same-gender couples is an established and growing part of the diverse structure of families in the United states.” (same-sex, 2015). Therefore embracing Americans diversity and promoting differences have lead to same-sex marriage being permitted and eventually accepted. Promoting same-sex marriage will financially support couples because it will allow both parties to put both names on title to a home, etc. In previous studies, 34.3% of lesbian couples and 22.3% of gay couples are raising children nationwide. Researches have proven that children who grow up up with married parents benefit that the relationship is recognized by the law. Arguing that being a good parent is not based of whom each other love, but on how on is treated and cared for. Also proven in studies shows that married couples have higher levels of happiness and less sickness than those who are unmarried. Same-sex marriage, a controversial social issue in the U.S. for several decades, is constantly evolving. When viewed historically, great change has happened in a short period of time, in the movement for same-sex marriage, given that until recently, no society in thousands of years has ever allowed it.

The controversy of gay marriages increases in debate within the United States and continues to be a debate even in the political scene. Whether we approve or disapprove of gay marriages the United States courts may force many to follow the law even despite the fact it may jeopardize their religious beliefs.

Nevertheless, it has also been noticed that with the passage of time increasing number of people are supporting the legalization of gay marriage at a progressive and noticeable speed. In addition, records expose the fact that more or less fifty percent of the US population are in favor to legally authorize the gay marriage with equal rights that are provided to couples of traditional marriages. The proponents have added various arguments to support their perspectives that are based on civil rights of the gay community, medical grounds and so forth. While on the other side of the spectrum, the opponents have also provided their basis for arguments of disagreement on parenting concerns, religious concerns and many other intellectual perceptions (Wolfson 2004).

Gay marriage is a very talked about topic in are country that shouldn’t be ignored. I believe men and women should be able to love freely and not be shamed by it. Marriage is a great factor in the United States. To some people it’s what we live for; is to get married and start a family. To not give everyone the same opportunity to have a happy marriage and family is unlike us.
