Ge Hong was an ancient alchemist who was born in Jurong, China in the year 343 CE. He lived during the Jin dynasty, which lasted from 265-420 CE and was mostly centered on the very eastern coast of China. He was a devout Taoist and followed its ideas religiously (pun intended). While he was the youngest of three brothers, he went on to outshine all of them. His family could trace their ancestry back to the San Huang Wen (“Three August Ones”), who were skilled alchemists and magi. While known for his alchemy, he also dabbled in verse and biographical writing. He dedicated himself to the pursuit of knowledge from a young age and did not limit the subjects that he studied.
