General observation notes: The student being observed is seated in the middle of the classroom room. The desks are arranged in an “L” shape and there are eight “L” shape arrangements in the classroom. This particular student sits at the end of the “L” shape, specifically close to the center of the classroom aisle. There are two eighth grade boys and one eighth grade girl also sitting at this “L” shape desk arrangement. There are an unknown number of students with IEPs, ESLs, and 504s student plans in the class. There are a total of nineteen students in the class.

The observer is sitting in an empty student desk at the far southeast corner of the classroom. In this corner location, the observer can see the entire student’s body, as well as the student’s face. While the student being observed knows the observer, he was unaware of the reason or intent behind this visit to the classroom.

10:49am The teacher directed students to open their agendas to this week. He directed the students to write in upcoming quiz and project due dates. These dates were also listed on the board, and the teacher pointed to the dates as he discussed them with more detail. This student seemed to be following directions. He was actively writing in his planner and looked on occasion at the board appearing to double check dates. Additionally, the student did briefly break into a giggle after the teacher made a joke regarding studying. Then, the student interrupted the teacher by blurting out
