He only cares about his life and he does not care about anyone else's. In the text, it states, “I hunt the scum of the earth…” This shows that Zaroff thinks the people he hunts are worthless and no good. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as a murderous, uncaring, and creepy. Zaroff is shown to be murderous in the story when he tells Rainsford that he kills people for fun. “I hunt the scum of the earth–sailors from tramp ships–lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels” (Connell 78). This quotes shows that Zaroff is murderous because he created his own game to kill people. During the story Zaroff is also uncaring. He shows that he is uncaring when he says it gives him pleasure to watch men die. “That is why I use them. It gives me pleasure” (Connell 70). Zaroff shows that he is uncaring during this scene because he does not care about how people he kills feel. Lastly, Zaroff is also creepy in the story.

Zaroff is purely unconscious, and has no compassion or remorse for his actions. His demented mind forces him to believe that it is moral to hunt all living creatures, when in reality he is actually murdering a human soul. The general is sadistic as well as arrogant. He is mentally unstable, insane, and he denies the fact that he is committing something as bad as what he is doing. According to General Zaroff, hunting for him has been consumed by boredom and he no longer sees hunting as a challenge. The harsh truth of island life reveals that Zaroff’s idea of civilization includes personal pleasure derived from murder .Zaroff explains his “game.” Zaroff has become bored with hunting because the animals do not provide a challenge for him, so hunts the only animal that can think and reason—man (Connell 74).He believes that he deserves the challenge, so it is morally right to hunt men. When they start to talk about hunting later, Zaroff talks about how he used to hunt since he was five, and then joined the army years later, hunting more animals as the years went by, until they became too easy for him. Zaroff then talks about an ideal animal, saying, “I wanted the ideal animal to hunt. So i said, what are the attributes to an ideal quarry? and the answer was of course, it must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason,” (8). Any normal person wouldn’t kill humans for just the thrill of it, he or she would have a purpose. But that is not who Zaroff is. He wants an animal that can reason and challenge by hunting, and the only animal eligible for that would be a human. Zaroff is a savage sadist who eyes twinkle when the hear the words murder and torture. But thanks to Rainsford, people don’t have to be scared to Ship - Trap Island.

He is a philosopher and shares his view of the world with others; “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong and, if needs to be, taken by the strong.” He imposes his ideology of how the world works. Zaroff looks positively on the cruel and foul acts he committed with reasoning: “I assure you, I do not do the things you suggest… I treat these visitors with every consideration…” He justifies his acts and tries to convince Rainsford that he is right. He found a cabin and sought help. There he met General Zaroff and started to understand what he did on the island. General Zaroff told him that he was an expert hunter and showed him all the animals on the island. Rainsford, the main character, figured out that Zaroff owned the island. General Zaroff was kind and helped out rainsford by giving him shelter and food.

Ever since then, people have questioned how could so many individuals have the moral to kill numerous innocent lives. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell uses character development, conflicts, and the climax to show the theme that each person has a different value of humanity. One way Connell presented the theme was through character development. At the beginning of the story, Rainsford did not care for the animals he hunted.

Because of his wealth, he was prideful and ruthless. The General began hunting at a young age proving that he has a lot of experience with the sport. Connell reveals more about the character stating that he got his first gun at the age of 5 which was specifically made for him (Connell 29). General Zaroff also reveals that he bought the island so that he could find better game. This shows that because he wanted a better challenge, he could just buy what he wanted to satisfy himself.

First, General Zaroff is very “Dangerous” character. He enjoys killing with a pistol, especially, humans. Rainsford says in the story “Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff what you speak of is murder (pg.19).”

General Zaroff implies when talking with Rainsford that he stocks the island with the prey he hunts by setting up a ship trap (Connell 25-26). Later on General Zaroff reveals that he hunts humans in a game he made where he gives them necessities and a three hours head start with a three day limit (27-28). Ships get tricked by a light he made that indicates a channel when there is actually a large wall of sharp rocks that crush anything in its path. Then General Zaroff captures the survivors, puts them in his training school and gives them the choice to be hunted to maybe survive or be killed by his servant, Ivan. These passages show that General Zaroff is a brutal killer, who murders dozens of humans by trapping their ships. Regarding this, General Zaroff is indeed the most interesting villain in The Most Interesting

After a while, Rainsford begins to catch on and says, humans, in which Zaroff says he’s correct. Realising this he leaves and the next day he returns he wants to leave the island. In which Zaroff explains the rules to him if he wants to leave the island either play his game and survive for three days or be whipped to death by his assistant Ivan.

Zaroff is a hunter of men, in the most dehumanizing way. The island he lives upon is his own land of a “cat and mouse” game. Zaroff purposefully will find or create shipwrecks which he then takes the victims of and uses them as his prize to be won in a hunting game. The conflict begins with Rainsford exclaiming that Zaroff’s “game” is immoral which leads to him being Zaroff’s next target. The story ends with Rainsford’s victory over Zaroff (the murder of Zaroff) which cements the idea that the conflict in the story was man versus

What Zaroff wants from his animal that he is going to hunt are human traits. No other animal that we know of can reason with a human. It the story The Most Dangerous Game Zaroff believes this situation if fair. This is because he doesn’t have to worry about living or dying. His mind is on one thing and one thing only is to find the person and kill them.
